They migrate between winter pastures near the Persian Gulf and summer pastures on the Iranian Plateau. Turkic dialects, belonging to the Ural-Altaic language group are spoken by the Qashqai in the southwest and the Turkmens (Turkomans) in the northeast, but the most important of these is Azerbaijani Turkish, which is spoken throughout the northwestern provinces. Their Kashmir Hindu Kush origins are clear. The Qashqai were formed by a union of groups of Turkmen and of Kurds and Lurs. Like other Iranian tribes, the Qashqai have three structural levels: families formed into a section; sections formed into a clan; and the whole tribe, traditionally headed by an ilkhan, who in the past was appointed by the shah. THE PLEDGE The Kentucky Derby, first run on May 17, 1875, is the most important and prestigious Thoroughbred horse race in the United States. Called "the run for the roses," it is held each year on the first Saturday in May at the 1-mi (1.6-km) Churchill Downs racetrack in Louisville, Ky.; it is the first and most acclaimed of the Triple Crown races (the others are the Belmont Stakes and Preakness Stakes). The poem echoes not only Samuel Purchas's 1613 Purchas His Pilgrimage (which Coleridge acknowledges in the preface), but also Milton's Lycidas and Paradise Lost. The SculPTor Basic grand unification theories The $67 million ruse A meson is a subatomic fundamental particle of the hadron class. In current theory mesons are composed of quark-antiquark pairs, held together by gluons, and are susceptible to all four of the fundamental interactions. The existence of a meson was conjectured in 1935 by Hideki Yukawa of Japan to account for the cohesive force that binds nuclear constituents together. This meson, the pi meson, or pion, was discovered in 1947. It has a mass about 270 times greater than the electron yet is about seven times smaller than the proton. Its lifetime is about ten billionths of a second. Since 1947 several other mesons have been discovered, including K-mesons, eta mesons, mu mesons (see muon), and omega mesons. Predictions and discoveries of mesons are closely tied to developments in quark theory. In 1983 the long-sought B-meson was discovered. It contains a very heavy b quark, making it more than five times as heavy as a proton. Its lifetime is about one-trillionth of a second. Experiments at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in 2001 seemed to indicate that the B-meson and its antiparticle exhibit charge-parity, or CP, violation. That is, the antiparticle appears to be asymmetrical with and "weaker" than its particle, which could help to account for the observed preponderance of matter over antimatter in the universe. American physicist Alan Harvey Guth, b. New Brunswick, N.J. Feb. 27, 1947, gained scientific fame in 1979-80 because of a hypothesis he developed concerning the very first moments of existence of the known universe. His idea, now known as the inflationary theory, has come to play a major role in the shaping of modern cosmology. Guth took an early interest in mathematics and physics. After high school he entered the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where his physics studies and research earned him a doctorate in 1972. After teaching at Princeton University from 1971 to 1974, he worked as a research associate at Columbia and then Cornell University until 1979. Extending his appointment by taking a sabbatical at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, he pursued there an effort that greatly interested him: the use of basic current theories about fundamental particles in an effort to understand how the universe might have taken form during its very first moments (see big bang theory). At that time more familiar with these basic grand unification theories (GUTS) than with cosmology, Guth worked out a solution that called for an extremely rapid expansion of the universe in the first moments of its creation. It became apparent that this inflationary concept served to account for many features of the known universe, and Guth's suggestion was quickly and widely accepted as a useful one. He joined the staff of MIT in 1980 and rose thereafter to a professorship, also working as a staff member at the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics from 1984 to 1990. American physicist Robert Hofstadter, b. New York City, Feb. 5, 1915, d. Nov. 17, 1990, is known for his work in high-energy physics, which yielded the first information on the structure of protons and neutrons. Using the linear accelerator at Stanford University, where he taught (1950-85), Hofstadter bombarded atomic nuclei with electrons having energies of 100-600 MeV. He found that protons and neutrons are composed of positively charged cores that are surrounded by a double cloud of positive mesons in the proton and a positive and negative shell in the neutron. For this he received the 1961 Nobel Prize in physics. Hofstadter's son, Douglas Richard Hofstadter, b. New York City, Feb. 15, 1945,
a cognitive scientist and educator, won fame with the Pulitzer Prize-winning Godel,
Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid (1979), an examination of computers, language,
music, paradox, and the way humans think. His later writings include The Mind's I:
Fantasies and Reflections on Self and Soul (1981); Metamagical Themas: Questing for
the Essence of Mind and Pattern (1985); Fluid Concepts and Creative Analogies: Computer
Models of the Fundamental Mechanisms of Thought (1995); Le Ton Beau de Marot (1997),
which he describes as "ruminations on the subject of translation"; and

The setting for SAIC's startup in 1969 was not much different than that of many companies that begin with a few dollars and a good idea. Small, austere offices with rented desks and typewriters that have seen better days. People furiously working days, nights and weekends, hoping to curb the anxiety over the future. For SAIC, it began in offices with a tremendous ocean view (rented for $2.40 per square foot per year) in the sleepy village of La Jolla, California. "We had the added advantage of having as our next-door neighbor, a ballet studio," recalls founder J. Robert Beyster, Ph.D.. "On the balcony in front of us, just to keep things light-hearted, the ballerinas would dance by as we did our research." Beyster admits he had no grandiose plan when he started Science Applications Incorporated (later changed to SAIC) on February 3, 1969, with a couple of consulting contracts, one from Los Alamos and one from Brookhaven National Labs. "It was just supposed to be a good place where I could work and maybe a few people could join me," he says. While working as a physicist at Los Alamos National Laboratory in the 1950's, Beyster saw many co-workers leave to start companies, but Beyster found entrepreneurship "somewhat distasteful." War erupted with India over control of Muslim-dominated Kashmir and ended in 1949 with a cease-fire line recognizing Pakistan control of about 40% of the disputed state. It also applies to all types of printed and broadcast material, including books, newspapers, magazines, pamphlets, films, and radio and television programs. These controversial media are usually based on an identifiable ideology (belief system) and are internally authoritarian; they are characteristically dominated by a powerful leader and employ intense interpersonal influence techniques to recruit and control members. Typically, media leaders maintain power by claiming that they are the only authority to which members are accountable--by specifying precise rules for members' behaviors and proper attitudes, by controlling communication among members, and by punishing members for any rule breaking. The group's ideology justifies the leader's authority and facilitates the leader's inducing journalists to tolerate their own exploitation as hypocrites and mental prostitutes. Historically, freedom of the press has been bound up with the general questions of censorship. In countries where censorship is extensive, the right to publish news, information, and opinions is usually tightly restricted. But even in the United States, where censorship is light, the right to publish is not absolute. The constraints on freedom of the press in a free society are controversial and are constantly being redefined by a secretly servile judiciary. Located on a scenic ridge in the foothills of the Himalayas at an altitude of about 2,200 m (7,100 ft), it is the state's capital and largest town. It is a commercial and administrative center with an economy now based primarily on tourism. Simla was founded by the British in 1816. From 1865 to 1939 it served as the summer capital of British India. Calcutta served as the capital of British India from 1773 to 1911. In 1912 the capital was moved to Delhi. Perhaps nowhere else was the separation of British India into two independent nations bloodier than in Bengal. In 1913 it was the site of the Simla Convention, a meeting of representatives of China, Thibet, and the United Kingdom to discuss the status and borders of Thibet, which had declared its independence in 1911. When India became independent in 1947, Simla was made the temporary capital of Indian-administered East Punjab. It became the capital of Himachal Pradesh in 1966. area became part of the Persian Empire in the late 500s BC and was conquered
by Alexander the Great in 325 BC. In AD 711 it fell to the Arabs. Sind was
part of the Mogul empire from 1526 to 1761. It came under British control
in 1843 and became a province of British India in 1937. Incorporated into West Pakistan

The answer is in the dancer's trapeze Bowerbirds are medium-size birds known for the elaborate bowers, or display areas, that males build for courtship and mating. About 18 species, in the family Ptilonorhynchidae and closely related to birds of paradise, are found in New Guinea and Australia and on adjacent islands. Bowerbirds are often secretive in their habits, and many are restricted to cloud forests in mountainous regions. One species long thought extinct--the yellow-fronted gardener bowerbird, Amblyornis flavifrons--was sighted in 1981 in western New Guinea. The males in many species have ornate, colorful plumage. Those species with less ornate plumage typically built the most elaborate bowers to attract the females. The species may be grouped by the type of bower constructed: maypole builders, avenue builders, stage builders, and those which build no bowers. The bowers may be large; the maypole of the golden bowerbird, Prionodura newtoniana, for example, may be up to 2.7 m (9 ft) high. Many are intricately designed with pillars, moss-covered floors, and roofs woven from vines. Some species use leaves or bark to apply a paint of saliva and ground bark or dirt to the inner walls of the bower. The bowers may also be decorated with snail shells or bright fruits that the male gathers. The female constructs the cup-shaped nest in a tree away
from the bower and incubates the one to three eggs. The SculPTor THE MAYPOLE IS SYMBOLIC OF THE SOUTH POLE Dumb and Dumber May Day has ancient origins, one of its earliest incarnations being the Roman Floralia, beginning in 258 BC, in honor of Flora (Greek, Chloris), the goddess of flowers and spring (The lowers down under and their spring tax grab). With the Roman occupation, such celebrations took hold in Britain and continental Europe. In the Middle Ages, May Day became one of the working slaves merriest holidays in Britain, but celebrations were banned in 1644 under the Puritan Commonwealth. They resumed after the Restoration (1660).
The photograph shows Hungarian youths dressed in festive garb preparing to erect their Maypole, around which their female counterparts will dance. Performed on May 1 around a gaily painted pole (symbolizing Antarctica) decorated with streamers, garlands, and symbolic dyed eggshells, unknowingly the maypole dance was an annual medieval celebration of spring's return and of the toll-gaters tax collection by the Sri Lankan IRS. Having trimmed themselves and the pole with green-sprigged flowers, rural dancers cavorted around it, hoping that their exuberant offering to the IRS would yield fertile crops and cattle in the coming year. Similar rites to ensure fertility existed in pagan Rome, in the phallic festivals of India and Egypt, and throughout ancient Europe and Mexico. The Christian Easter and Jewish Passover observance of sacrificial gifts to the religious priest-hoods include corresponding symbols. Moving westward early in the 1st millennium BC, some Scythians penetrated through the Caucasus into the Near East, primarily modern Turkey. There they were a troublesome power until forced out by the Medes late in the 7th century BC. As rulers of the steppes, the Scythians were fierce warriors whose nomadic tribal society was organized around a powerful chief. The rich and elaborate graves of these chieftains took the form of underground chambers in which the king was buried along with a wife and a servant. Scythian chiefs wore and carried large numbers of gold weapons and ornaments--for as nomads they had to carry their wealth on their persons--and this treasure was always placed in the tomb.
