His name was GRENDEL. Grendel was killed by a careless driver. Grendel's mother then responded by giving birth to two female cats, one white-orange--and-black with normal feet that I named KITTY and the other a white-and-orange one with twenty-two toes that I named KITTY PILGRIM. Later, Kitty Pilgrim was also hit by a careless driver but she survived and got better. On the farm the cats continually kill and eat the rats and chipmonks and keep the overall number of these hangers-on in check. Meanwhile, on the other hand, the goats eat and have incestuous sex just like the cats but do little else for the farm. We also have a donkey named JODIE who makes a lot of noise, and thereby gives the goats a false sense of security. Yet, the goats are viewed by me, the farmer, as having more value than do the cats. Why is this? It's because the goats, like money, are INSURANCE for rainy days ahead. When rainy days finally come most farmers cash-in their scapegoats and survive, while others, those goat farmers who grew to view their goats as pets that need to be hung on to like friends, will die slowly and painfully along with their pet goats and never see sunny days again. In Islam, a dervish is a member of one of the many Essene religious brotherhoods associated with Sufism. The word Sufism is derived from the Arabic suf ("wool"; hence sufi, "a person wearing an ascetic's woolen garment") Dervish (or darwish) is a Persian word meaning a Hindu mendicant, equivalent to the Arabic fakir. Some Sufi fraternities advocate mystical practices that include ecstatic and hypnotic rituals of singing and dancing. Extreme forms of mysticism pervade some orders, notably the howling dervishes and the whirling dervishes. The fraternities generally are headed by a sheikh who claims to possess esoteric knowledge. A silsila, or "chain," (see the builders Cain and China) is thought to bind a novice, through his immediate teacher and a series of guides or saints, including Muhammad himself, to Slavic Silesia once located in southwest Poland and northern Czechoslovakia, in 500 AD. EYES WIDE SHUT - TOO PROUD TO LEARN OF BEN HUR The Uighur are the major ethnic group of the province of Xinjiang (Sinkiang) in China. Speakers of a southeast Turkic language, they are light-skinned and relatively tall, with brown hair, brown or lighter eyes, and aquiline noses. Basically of Mongolian stock, they tend to resemble more closely Central Asian Turks than the Chinese Mongolian physical type. In 1999 the Uighur numbered nearly 8 million in Xinjiang and more than 700,000 in the former USSR, chiefly in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. In China a huge influx of ethnic Chinese into the Muslim Uighur area has led to assaults on Uighur cultural influence and contributed to the rise of ethnic tensions and a small separatist movement. The Uighur originated on the Mongol steppes during the 6th century AD, and by 744 they were absolute rulers of their realm (see Mongols). Reportedly defeated (840) by the Yenisey Kirghiz, they fled into Xinjiang. Originally nomads, the Uighur shifted early to settled agriculture. For 11 centuries they lived on irrigated oases of the Tarim River basin and also in cities, where they have worked as merchants, shopowners, and innkeepers. Their indigenous religion combined shamanistic and Buddhist traditions, but they reportedly converted to Sunni Islam about 900. The Uighur have been described as both extremely devout and pleasure loving. From the time of Marco Polo, they were noted for casual relationships between the sexes. Divorce was easy. The Uighur were also influenced by the ascetic philosophy of Sufism, and some Uighur were dervishes. The name Uighur passed out of usage from the period of the Mongol conquests (1200s) to the 1920s, when it was revived by the Soviets and the Chinese. Located on a plateau about 1,027 m (3,370 ft) above sea level, and is known for its handwoven carpets since the 13th century. One of the oldest cities in the world (excavations reveal settlement in the 3d millennium BC), Konya was settled by the Phrygians in the 3d century BC and was reportedly visited three times by Saint Paul. The city reached the peak of its prosperity in the 13th century; it retains a number of buildings (now used as museums) from this period, including the monastery of the mystical sect known in the West as Whirling Dervishes. Konya was captured by the Il-Khan Mongols in the late 13th century and was part of the Turkoman principality of Karaman before it was annexed (1472) by the Ottoman Empire. After a period of decline, it grew as a result of the construction (1896) of the German built Istanbul-Baghdad railroad, which passes through Konya. The founder of the Sufi order known as the "Whirling Dervishes," Jalal al-Din al-Rumi, called Maulavi, 1207-73, was a Persian mystic and poet revered for both his spiritual teachings and his poetic innovations. In 1231, Rumi began to teach his mystical doctrine, and in 1244 he came under the influence of Shamsi Tabriz, an itinerant Sufi. The earliest of his poetical works is a collection of lyrical odes named for Tabriz. The second is called the Masnavi, or Mathnavi (c.1246-73; Eng. trans., 1925-40), a long poem in six books consisting of fables and anecdotes describing the soul's quest for union with "God". Rumi's poetic style is characterized by a depth of feeling and wealth of images drawn from daily life, often in disregard of the rigid rules of Persian rhetoric. Mar. 10, 1983, is best known for his work on a group of fatty acids obtained from semen and seminal vescicles. Euler called them prostaglandins, assuming that they originated in the prostate gland (they have since been found in other parts of the human body). Prostaglandins have a wide range of actions affecting different systems of the body--they stimulate uterine contractions, for example, and also play a role in inflammation, clot formation, and immune response. At least 16 prostaglandins have been isolated. They affect several body systems, including the central nervous, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, urinary, and endocrine systems. Their effects on the endocrine system include stimulating the release of growth hormone by the pituitary gland, mediating the effects of luteinizing hormone on the ovary, stimulating the dissolution of the corpus luteum, and altering steroid hormone synthesis by the adrenal cortex. One of the prostaglandins has been found to be a powerful stimulant of uterine contractions and may prove useful for inducing labor.
