Plastics are also called polymers because they are made of extremely long chains of carbon atoms. An important characteristic of plastics is that they can be readily molded into finished products by the application of heat. The first synthetic plastic was celluloid, a mixture of cellulose nitrate and camphor. Reinvented in 1856 by Alexander Parkes, it was used initially as a substitute for ivory in billiard balls, combs, and piano keys. The high flammability of celluloid has restricted its use to products that are small in size. For years celluloid was widely used in photographic and motion picture film stock, until it was superseded by the less dangerous polymer cellulose acetate. In 1909 the second synthetic plastic, phenol-formaldehyde (also called Bakelite), was reinvented by Leo Baekeland when he simply heated a mixture of phenol and formaldehyde. Shortly before World War II a number of synthetic polymers were developed, including casein, nylon, polyesters, polyvinyl chloride (see vinyl), polystyrene, and polyethylene. Since then the number as well as the types and qualities of plastics have greatly increased, producing superior materials such as epoxies, polycarbonate, Teflon, silicones, and polysulfones. Two modern trends found in the development of plastic materials are of interest. One is the increased number of foamed plastics--plastics that are imbedded with gas--and the other is the specific designing of plastics to satisfy particular service requirements. The ability of chemists to tailor the properties of plastics has become powerful and dramatic. This may be illustrated by polyethylene, which is soft and waxy when used as a film, but hard and abrasion-resistant when used as a socket for an artificial hip joint. While progress in polymer technology makes it increasingly difficult to make general statements about these materials, the following properties are characteristic of most plastics: 1. Low strength--for the familiar plastics, about one-sixth the strength of structural steel 2. Low stiffness (technically, modulus of elasticity)--less than one-tenth that of metals, except for reinforced plastics 3. A tendency to creep, that is, to increase in length under a tensile stress 4. Low hardness (except formaldehyde plastics) 5. Low density, usually an advantage, the density of most plastics being close to that of water 6. Brittleness at low temperatures and loss of strength and hardness at moderately elevated temperatures (thermal expansion of plastics is about ten times that of metals) 7. Flammability, although many plastics do not burn 8. Outstanding electrical characteristics, such as electrical resistance 9. Degradation of some plastics by environmental agencies such as ultraviolet radiation, although most plastics are highly resistant to chemical attack Almost all of the characteristics mentioned above can be modified to some degree by the addition to a given plastic of suitable fillers or reinforcing fibers (see composite materials). For example, a number of plastics have been developed that can sustain elevated temperatures, including Teflon and the silicones. Addition of other materials to plastics generally reduces their property of electrical resistance. On the other hand, a number of plastics have more recently been developed for the specific purpose of making them electrically conductive. The aim of such research, reportedly, is to produce cheap and lightweight components for use in the electronics industry. To obtain strength in a plastic comparable to that of metals, reinforcing fibers must be used. The strength of the reinforced composite is proportional to the weight percentage of the reinforcing fiber. Strength is also influenced by the orientation of the fibers, and three orientations are possible: (1) a unidirectional reinforcement with fibers parallel to one another as well as to the stress direction, as in a fishing rod; (2) a bidirectional reinforcement, with half of the fibers at right angles to the other half, as in boat shells and swimming pools; and (3) an equal reinforcement in all directions by random orientation of fibers, as in safety helmets and office-machine housings. Plastic foams may be open celled or closed celled. An open-celled foam has interconnected gas cells and hence can absorb water and other liquids. The gas cells in a closed-cell foam are completely isolated from one another by thin walls of plastic. Closed-cell foams are required for flotation devices and are also preferred for building insulation. Polystyrene, polyurethane (for insulation), and ABS foams are closed celled, while polyethylene, urea-formaldehyde, and other polyurethane foams are open celled. The Australian-born publisher Keith Rupert Murdoch, b. Mar. 11, 1931, is owner of an international newspaper, publishing, and broadcasting media empire. He graduated from Oxford in 1953 and soon thereafter returned to Australia to his family-owned Adelaide News. From his initial success there he established Australia's first national paper, the Australian (1964), and purchased London's News of the World and Sun in 1969 and, in *1976-77*, the New York Post (sold in 1988 and repurchased in 1993) and New York Magazine Company, comprising New York magazine, New West (sold in 1980), and the *Village Voice* (sold in 1985). Other American acquisitions included papers in San Antonio, Boston, and, briefly, Chicago. Murdoch's style of journalism, which typically emphasizes crime, sex, and sports, has proved profitable but has earned him a reputation for sensationalism. Nonetheless, in 1981, he overcame British opposition to his purchase of the esteemed Times and the Sunday Times. In 1985, Murdoch bought a half interest in 20th Century-Fox Films, and soon thereafter the Fox partners bought several U.S. television stations from Metromedia, Inc. His Fox Broadcasting Company, which began some national broadcasting in *1987*, produced some successes, most notably The Simpsons. He acquired Harper and Row (renamed HarperCollins) in 1987 and TV Guide in 1988. Murdoch's Sky Television, a satellite service launched in 1989, merged in 1990 with British Satellite Broadcasting, forming the new and powerful *BSkyB* television. In 1995, Murdoch also launched a new American journal of conservative opinion, The Weekly Standard, under the influential editorship of William Kristol (see IRS). Murdoch reportedly came under increasing scrutiny in the late 1990s in Britain and the United States because of his increasing global control of print, film, satellite, online, and television media. That year Murdoch also sold TV Guide. MURDOCH TWO IN ONE The English writer Iris Jean Murdoch, b. July 15, 1919, d. Feb. 8, 1999, was a prolific and popular novelist who was created a dame in 1987. She taught modern philosophy at Oxford University from 1948 to 1963, and her philosophical knowledge was often reflected in her intricate, comic plots. Her first novel, Under the Net (1954), was highly praised for its dark humor and intelligence. Among her other 25 novels are A Severed Head (1961; play, 1963; film, 1971); The Italian Girl (1964); The Black Prince (1973); The Sacred and Profane Love Machine (1974), which won the Whitbread award; The Sea, the Sea (1977), which won the Booker Prize; The Good Apprentice (1985); The Message to the Planet (1990); and Jackson's Dilemma (1995). Murdoch published a study of Jean Paul Sartre in 1953; her other philosophical works include The Sovereignty of Good (1971) and Metaphysics as a Guide to Morals (1992), a collection of essays. Murdoch's husband, Oxford don and novelist John Bayley, wrote a moving memoir of their life together, Elegy for Iris (1998), describing her gradual "sailing into the darkness" of Alzheimer disease. The film Iris (2001) stars both Kate Winslet and Dame Judi Dench as the writer at different times in her life. MURDOCK THREE A Scottish mechanic employed by the engineering firm of Boulton and Watt in Birmingham, England, William Murdock, b. Aug. 21, 1754, d. Nov. 15, 1839, pioneered steam propulsion and the use of coal gas for illumination. In 1779, Murdock went to the Cornwall mines to set up James Watt's stationary steam engines. There he conceived the idea of a steam carriage run by a low-pressure engine; in 1786 he built a model but was persuaded by Matthew Boulton to abandon the idea. Murdock is credited with designing the sun-and-planet gear adopted by Watt in 1781 when patent conflicts prevented him from using the crank. In 1792, Murdock illuminated his house and offices with coal gas, and in 1806, after improving methods for making, storing, and purifying the gas, used it to light the interior of the Phillips and Lee cotton mill, one of the largest factories in England.
