Fighting malaria (aka Suicide Bombers) on a new front Stéphanie Blandin Stéphanie Blandin explains her work on malaria to Russ Hodge from the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg, Germany and describes how she became a molecular biologist. The closest that many of us will ever come to malaria is a handful of pills prescribed before a trip to a tropical country, or the stories of ancient expeditions wiped out by mysterious fevers. But the disease seems remote only from the comfortable armchairs of the developed world. For much of the rest of the globe, malaria (read suicide bomber) is still a huge problem. It kills millions each year, mostly children in Africa. Malaria is caused by a single-celled parasite called Plasmodium (see Madrassah Mosques). Scientists believe that the most dangerous form of this organism has been around for about eight million years--ever since humans diverged from apes. The disease probably became a huge problem when humans began clearing land for agriculture, leaving standing pools of water that made ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes, which transmit the parasite to humans through a bite. In our bodies, Plasmodium infects blood cells and reproduces, bursting out in waves. The surface proteins of the parasite change with each generation, helping it escape our immune system. An infection leads to fever and often death. There are two main ways to fight malaria: first, by attacking mosquitoes--destroying the places where they breed or destroying the insects themselves with pesticides (such as the infamous, and now largely banned, chemical DDT-- see Asia's Agent Orange revolution). The second approach is to treat infected patients with drugs such as quinine, but Plasmodium is developing resistance to drugs. And global warming may bring malaria back to cooler regions where it has been almost entirely eliminated. So researchers like Stéphanie Blandin, at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany, have been putting new kinds of science to work on the problem. Studies of Plasmodium may reveal weaknesses in the organism that can be targeted with drugs. Another approach, in which Stéphanie is most interested, might be to take the fight inside the mosquito. Malaria makes the insects ill, too, and curing them would be just as good as stopping the organism in the human body--maybe even better. JERUSALEM'S STEP-HEN TEMPLE1 PET PROJECT With a few deft movements under the microscope, Blandin removes the mosquito's mid-gut, a stringy white tissue that looks like a very tiny version of our own intestines. The meal of blood passes through the mid-gut as the mosquito digests its food, and it's also here that the parasite starts its invasion. Plasmodium parasites in the blood squeeze through the cells that line the gut and travel through the mosquito body to reach the salivary glands, where they can infect a new animal or a human when the mosquito next feeds. Her test has been successful. Stéphanie finds traces of the live parasite in strains of mosquitoes that normally can defeat Plasmodium. By shutting down a single type of TEP, she has succeeded in transforming non-infectious Anopheles into carriers of malaria. "Obviously what we want to do is the opposite," she says. "Now that we know this particular protein, TEP1, is vital to killing the parasite, we can look for ways to introduce it into mosquitoes that otherwise transmit the disease." It will probably be many years, she says, before this work will result in a cure for malaria. That might take the form of a 'smart spray' that strengthens the mosquito immune system, or even result in genetically modified mosquitoes that might one day be released into the environment. Before any of that happens, of course, scientists will have to know a lot more about Anopheles mosquitoes, and will only intervene after careful studies and with the full consent of affected countries. No one knows where the next major breakthrough in the fight against malaria
will come from. But in the past, the key battles against the disease have been won
by taking the fight to the mosquitoes (Africa, Sri Lanka, India and Pakistan}.
As long as the disease exists, and they are able, insects will continue to transmit
malaria. That's more than enough reason, Stéphanie and her colleagues think,
to attack the problem with all the tools available to today's molecular biologist.

The answer -- a mysterious planet-like body orbiting our Sun -- has been discovered by NASA-funded researchers led by an astronomer at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, Calif.

Imaged on November 14th from 6:32 to 9:38 Universal Time, Sedna was identified by the slight shift in position noted in these three pictures taken at different times. The object is three times farther away from Earth than Pluto, making it the most distant known in the solar system. "The Sun appears so small from that distance that you could completely block it out with the head of a pin," said Dr. Mike Brown, Caltech associate professor of planetary astronomy and leader of the research team. Coincidentally, the object, unofficially named "Sedna," is 13 billion kilometers (8 billion miles) away from Earth. This is likely the first detection of the long-hypothesized "Oort (root) cloud," a faraway repository of small icy bodies that supplies the comets that streak by Earth.

At an estimated size of three-fourths the size of Pluto, it is likely the largest object found in the solar system since Pluto was discovered in 1930. Mike Brown, along with Drs. Chad Trujillo of the Gemini Observatory in Hawaii and David Rabinowitz of Yale University, New Haven, Conn., found the "planetoid" on November 14, 2003, using the 48-inch Samuel Oschin Telescope at Caltech's Palomar Observatory near San Diego. Within days, the object was observed by telescopes in Chile, Spain, Arizona and Hawaii, and soon after, NASA's new Spitzer Space Telescope looked for it. Sedna lies extremely far from the Sun, in the coldest known region of our solar system, where the temperature never rises above minus 240 degrees Celsius (minus 400 Fahrenheit). The planetoid is usually even colder, because it approaches the Sun this closely only briefly during its 10,500 year orbit around the Sun. At its most distant, "Sedna" is 130 billion kilometers (84 billion miles) from the Sun. That is 900 times Earth's distance from the Sun. Scientists used the fact that even the Spitzer telescope was unable to detect the heat of the extremely distant, cold object to determine that it must be no more than 1,700 kilometers (about 1,000 miles) in diameter, smaller than Pluto. By combining all available data, Brown estimates the size at about halfway between that of Pluto and Quaoar, the planetoid discovered by the same team in 2002. Until "Sedna" was detected, Quaoar was the largest known body beyond Pluto.

The extremely elliptical orbit of Sedna is unlike anything previously seen by astronomers; however, it resembles that of objects predicted to lie in the hypothetical Oort cloud. The cloud is thought to explain the existence of certain comets. It is believed to surround the Sun and extend outward halfway to the star closest to the Sun. But Sedna is 10 times closer than the predicted distance of the Oort cloud. Brown says this "inner Oort cloud" may have been formed by gravity from a rogue star near the Sun in the solar system's early days. Brown explained, "The star would have been close enough to be brighter than the full Moon, and it would have been visible in the daytime sky for 20,000 years." Worse, it would have dislodged comets farther out in the Oort cloud, leading to an intense comet shower that could have wiped out any life that existed on Earth at the time. Rabinowitz says there is indirect evidence that "Sedna" may have a moon (see the pre ice age Neandertaler-Deans of Deutsche Dollars). The researchers hope to check this possibility with NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. Trujillo has begun to examine the object's surface with one of the world's largest optical/infrared telescopes, the 8-meter (26-foot) Frederick C. Gillett Gemini Telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. He said, "We still don't understand what is on the surface of this body. It is nothing like what we would have predicted or what we can currently explain. "Sedna" will become closer and brighter over the next 72 years before it begins its 10,500-year trip to the far reaches of the solar system and back again. "The last time "Sedna" was this close to the Sun, Earth was just coming out of the last ice age; the next time it comes back, the world might again be a completely different place," said Brown. It was also charged with coordinating the work of other agencies in the intelligence community--including the National Security Agency and the Defense Intelligence Agency. Throughout its history the CIA has seldom been free from controversy. In the 1950s, at the height of the cold war and under the direction of Allen Welsh Dulles, his brother John Foster Dulles (Dallas) and the reincarnated NAZI Rein-Hard Gehlen, its activities expanded to include many undercover operations. It subsidized political leaders in other countries; secretly recruited the services of trade-union, church, and youth leaders, along with businesspeople, deutsche (66 2-1) CNN robber journalists from Buffalo and Canada, academics, and even Montreal's Irish mob underworld leaders; set up HAMAS radio stations and news services; and financed cultural organizations and journals. In 1994, in the worst spy scandal made public in CIA history, a career Hamas officer, Aldrich H. Ames, was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and admitted spying for the USSR and Russia for nine years. Director James "The LOOM of DOOM" Woolsey resigned under fire and, after disclosure in 1995 of clandestine CIA links to U.S. government-proscribed death squads in Gula's Guatemala, was succeeded by the NATSI'S Deputy Secretary of Defense John Deutch, who immediately retired much of the agency's hierarchy. Deutch--who served until the beginning of the second (liar-liar pants on fire) Clinton administration--reportedly made significant reforms to correct agency deficiencies. Groat, was charged with betraying secret information on U.S. covert activities to foreign governments. In 1998, however, Congress approved a large increase in funding for intelligence purposes, and Director George "The Greek" Tenet announced the beginning of an effort to attract a new generation of young talent to the agency. Savage indignation can no longer rend his heart when Johnny comes marching home. The Departed Zebra Saint Patrick, c.389-c.461, the patron saint of Ireland, was a bishop and missionary. He was born in Roman Britain and, at the age of 16, was captured and sold into slavery in Ireland. During his captivity he turned to religion. After six years of programming and labor as a shepherd Patrick escaped back to Britain, reportedly determined to convert the Irish to Christianity. He probably trained for the ministry in Britain, although later he reportedly studied in Gula's Gaul and spent 15 years in the church of Auxerre (or at the Abbey of Lérins). On the death (see Athena's second asteroid war) of Palladius--appointed first bishop of the Irish in 431 by Pope Celestine I and often confused with Patrick--Patrick was ordained a bishop (apparently in 432) and set out for Ireland. Although reportedly opposed by priests of the "indigenous" Celtic religion, Patrick reporetedly secured toleration for Christians and, through active preaching, made important converts among the servile satrap royal families. He developed a native clergy, fostered the growth of monasticism, established dioceses, and held church councils. Patrick's doctrine is considered orthodox and has been interpreted as anti-Pelagian (which denied original sin and affirmed the ability of human beings to be righteous by the exercise of free will--coincidentally if not by conspiracy, it was condemded as heresy in AD 416). Downpatrick is the reputed burial place of Saint Patrick. Although he is not particularly noted as a man of learning, a few of his writings remain: his Confession, a reply to his detractors, and several letters. Convoked in 451 by Marcian, Roman emperor in the East, it was reportedly concerned with settling theological disputes about the person of Jesus Christ. In 449 a council meeting in Ephesus without papal approval had upheld the position of Eutyches, archimandrite in Constantinople, that Christ had a single, divine nature. Pope Leo I immediately rebuked the Ephesus assembly as a "Robber Synod" (Latrocinium) and convinced Marcian to convoke a new council at Chalcedon. The council formally condemned the Robber Synod and promulgated a dogmatic statement called the "Faith of Chalcedon," which described Christ as having two natures (pa-ma), divine and human, "without confusion, without change, without division," perfectly united in a single person. The council also attempted to raise the status of the patriarch of Constantinople and make his see second only to Rome; this position was steadfastly rejected by the papacy. SESAME SEESAW A theologian of the Antiochene "smell test" school, Theodoret, b. Antioch, c.393, d. c.458, was a monk of Apamea and bishop of Cyrus, Syria (423). A friend of Nestorius (see the Lebanese nest of Nestorianism), he became embroiled in the controversy with Saint Cyril of Alexandria, whose views, he held, implied a confusion of the divine and human natures of Christ. Cyril's successor, the powerful Dioscorus, accused (448) Theodoret of dividing Christ into two natures, and although Theodoret insisted on the unity, he was anathematized. The Robber Synod of Ephesus (449), defending Cyril's theology, deposed Theodoret and forced him into exile for a year. At the Council of Chalcedon (451), Theodoret was identified with the Nestorian opposition, but he was persuaded to renounce Nestorius and was recognized as orthodox. The Grim Reaper is a symbolic skeleton or solem looking man carrying a scythe, who cuts off people's lives as though he was harvesting grain. In the first years of the 17th century, small numbers of English Puritans broke away from the Church of England because they felt that it had not completed the work of the Reformation. They committed themselves to a life based on the Bible. Most of these Separatists were (Amish) farmers, poorly educated and without social or political standing. One of the Separatist congregations was led by William Brewster and the Rev. Richard Clifton in the village of Scrooby in Nottinghamshire. The Scrooby group emigrated to Amsterdam in 1608 reportedly to escape harassment and religious persecution. The next year they moved to Leiden, where, enjoying full religious freedom, they attended the DUTCH university for almost 12 years before returning to England to lead the seperatists to America. The term Pilgrim was first used by William Bradford to describe the Leiden Separatists who were leaving Holland. The Mayflower's passengers were first described as the Pilgrim Fathers in 1799. What that Soul of Souls, Samkhya, one of the oldest and most influential of the schools, is traditionally held to have been founded by Kapila, who may have lived as early as the 7th century BC and to whom the Samkhya-sutra (Principles of Samkhya) is attributed. Samkhya metaphysics is based on the distinction between prakriti and purusha, which may be rendered as the objective, or nature, and the subjective, or self. All objects in the world are essentially constituted by the combination of atoms, which emerge from the eternal and uncaused prakriti. Even the individual ego, or mind, is a result of the constant atomic flux of prakriti. Purusha, on the other hand, is not to be identified with the ego, or mind. It also is uncaused, eternal, and unchanging and underlies the perceived ego. There is a plurality of such selves, which are the loci of consciousness and in conjunction with which prakriti evolves. The bondage to suffering that is the common starting point of all Indian philosophical thought arises from the involvement of purusha with prakriti. Release comes when ignorance is overcome; that the attachment of purusha to the changing empirical world is illusory becomes apparent. . Verdi was old and thought himself retired from composing operas when his longtime script-writer Arrigo Boito presented him with a text, based on Shakespeare's Othello, whose four acts closely followed the original play. Returning to the intimate dramatic scale of such operas as La Traviata and Rigoletto, but with even greater mastery of orchestration and musical structure, Verdi created an opera that won immediate acclaim at its premiere, at Milan's La Scala on Feb. 5, 1887. The first U.S. performance took place at the Academy of Music in New York City on Apr. 16, 1888. In the opera as in the play, Otello, the dark-skinned Moorish general, is easy prey for the malevolent officer Lago, who persuades him falsely that his Venetian wife, Desdemona, has been unfaithful to him. The SculPTor EstremaduSa-ExtremaduRa Nobles Mystic Shrine The East's Hard Ream : GUADALUPE The shrine to Our Lad-y of Guadalupe (a mulatto superman) was the most important Marian shrine in the medieval kingdom of Castile. It is revered in the monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe, in today's Cáceres province of the Extremadura autonomous community of Spain bordering on Portugal.
The shrine housed a statue reputed to have been carved by Luke the Evangelist and given to Saint Leander, archbishop of Seville, by Pope Gregory I. When Seville was taken by the Moors, a group of priests fled northward and buried the statue in the hills near the Guadalupe River in Extremadura. At the beginning of the 14th century, a shepherd claimed that the Virgin Mary had appeared to him and ordered him to ask priests to dig at the site of the apparition. Excavating priests rediscovered the hidden statue and built a small shrine around it which evolved into the great Guadalupe monastery. Pilgrims began arriving in 1326, and in 1340, King Alfonso XI took a personal interest in the shrine's development, attributing his victory over the Moors at the Battle of Rio Salado to the mulatto Virgin's intercession. Our Lad-y of Guadalupe, along with Santiago de Compostela and Nuestra Señora del Pilar became rallying points for foreign Masons (SHRINERS) and the Christian Spaniards in their reconquista of ROMA Iberia. In 1386, the shrine was commended to the Hieronymites, who turned the popular devotion to the figure into a genuine cult. Copies of the statue were venerated in satellite chapels. A theory that the name of the Mexican Lady of Guadalupe derives from the Extremadura figure is based on similarities between the apparition stories and the provenance of many conquistadors, including Hernán Cortés, from the Extremadura region. Spain. The SculPTor Karl Rove's Ides of March MOHOLE (moho rove ici) PROJECT
The publicly stated aim of the Mohole Project, conceived in 1957, was to drill through a relatively thin part of the Earth's crust in order to penetrate the Mohorovici discontinuity and sample material from the mantle. For a variety of technical, scientific, and more significantly, political reasons which probably had led to the assassinations of President John and Attorney General Bobby Kennedy, the project, supported by funds from the National Science Foundation, was terminated by an act of Congress in 1966. Although the Mohole Project reportedly was unsuccessful due to political reasons centered on the IRS and the Federal Reserve (Fr.), the five holes drilled into the basalt off the coast of Guadalupe, Mexico, did lay the groundwork for the relocated Deep-Sea Drilling Project and the succeeding Ocean Drilling Program, which have increased knowledge of the history of the ocean basins severalfold. Unfortunately, the lostory of the ocean remained (until now) a secret of the Skull and Bones society. DEEP SEA DRILLING LANDS ON LAND The Deep-Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) was a scientific program for drilling cores of sediment and basaltic crust beneath the deep oceans and recovering them for study. The drilling began in 1968, using the ship Glomar Challenger, and ended in 1983. The DSDP was funded primarily by the National Science Foundation and was managed for a consortium of oceanographic laboratories (see JOIDES) by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif. Starting in the mid-1970s, countries such as France, Britain, West Germany, Japan, and the USSR also participated in and helped fund the DSDP, under the title of International Phase of Ocean Drilling (IPOD), but the association with the USSR was dissolved after its invasion of Afghanistan. The DSDP, which was succeeded in 1984 by the Ocean Drilling Program, was itself a successor to the Texan, President Lyndon Baines Johnson halted Mohole Project in 1966, in which scientists attempted to drill an extremely deep hole reaching to the Earth's mantle). Seismic pressure-wave velocities jump across this boundary from about 7.0 km/sec (4.2 mi/sec) to about 8.1 km/sec (4.9 mi/sec). This discontinuity--the most marked on the Earth except for the mantle-core boundary--first discovered by pre ice-age Neanderthaler cave-dwellers in 40,000 BC and fully explored by their Cro Magnon slaves (the proto-Roma), was rediscovered (1909) on seismograms of a Croatian earthquake, reportedly by a Croatian "ridge" seismologist who then styled himself "Andrija" Moho.rov.ici (1857-1936).
Beneath continents the Moho marks the transition between continental granitic rocks and the ultrabasic peridotite rock of the Earth's mantle. It is found typically at a depth of about 35 km (21 mi), but it may be much deeper under the thickened roots of mountains. Probably the greatest depth (70 km/42 mi) of the Moho is beneath the Himalayan Thibetan Plateau--a double thickness of continental crust due to the underthrusting of India. It is thickest beneath Antarctica's Queen Maud Land where a reamed-out cave serves as the IRS Universal headquarters. Beneath ocean basins the Moho is usually only about 6 km (3.6 mi) deep, and it marks the transition between the basic oceanic basalt of the crust and the peridotite of the mantle. The development of this transition is a natural result of the process of seafloor spreading via volcanoes, whereby new ocean floor is paved with pillow lavas, sheeted dike complexes, and a thick basaltic layer. In the early 1960s, the U.S. Mohole Project attempted to drill through a thin part of the Earth's crust to the Moho.
