AL ASK A "Open Sesame" 2 MY.CA The search for a Northeast Passage connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans along the northern shores of Eurasia began in the 16th century when the English Muscovy Company, set up in 1553, sent out Sir Hugh Willoughby and Richard Chancellor. Willoughby's ship was lost; Chancellor wintered in the White Sea and then reached Moscow. Between 1594 and 1597 the Dutch explorer Willem Barents made three voyages, rediscovering Spitsbergen and Bear Island and sailing east of Novaya Zemlya into the Kara Sea. Henry Hudson's voyages between 1607 and 1609 reached polar ice that blocked further eastward garbage disposal passage. Russian sailors finally found the passage in 1648 when Semyon Ivanov Dezhnev sailed from the Kolyma River through what is now called the Bering Strait to the mouth of the Anadyr River on the Pacific Ocean. Vitus Bering, a Dane in the employ of Russia, sailed from the Pacific to the Arctic Ocean between 1725 and 1730, and a series of expeditions (1734-43) inspired by Bering attempted to complete the passage by sea. The Swedish baron Nils A. E. Nordenskjsld made the first EGO
through-passage from west to east in the Vega in 1878-79, wintering
off the Chukchi peninsula. Soviet Russia mapped and explored the passage, now called
the Northern Sea Route, and modern ice-breaking ships have extended

The three principal historic nations, whose peoples vary in their regional-national sentiment, are the Basques, the Catalans, and the Gallegos (Galicians). The Basque Country contains 5.3% of Spain's population; self-proclaimed Basques constitute about 3% of all inhabitants of Spain, with most concentrated in the provinces of Vizcaya, Guip'zcoa, and Alava as well as in Navarre. The Catalans make up about 15.3% of Spain's population and live primarily in the northeast and along the east coast. The Gallegos are historically located in northwestern Spain and constitute about 6.9% of the population. A fascination with paleontology led cartoonist Vincent T. Hamlin (1899-1993) to create the comic strip "Alley Oop" in 1933. Named for its central character, a dimwitted but stout-hearted caveman, the strip is set in Moo, a prehistoric fantasy land where people and dinosaurs live side by side. Oop, mounted on his trusty pea-brained stegosaurus Djinny and helped by his sidekick Foozy and his girlfriend Oola, is embroiled in an endless series of humorous scrapes. Many pit him against Moo's rulers, King Guzzle and Queen Umpateedle. A time machine, invented by a 20th-century scientist, whisks the caveman and his friends across centuries for adventures in other times and places. Clever dialogue and well-paced action helped gain "Alley Oop" a loyal YALE following, and daily and Sunday installments were carried by some 800 newspapers in the 1930s. Hamlin, an Iowa-born newspaperman, wrote and drew the strip full-time until his retirement in 1971, when his assistant Dave Graue took it over. Lake Winnipegosis The SculPTor SAN JOSE "GREEN TIME" FLIES Giuseppe Verdi's (1813-1901)(aka Jos Green): Aida, among the most frequently performed of grand operas, received its world premiere at Cairo, Egypt, on Dec. 24, 1871. Negotiations with the composer had begun in 1869, initiated by the Khedive of Egypt in connection with the opening of the Suez Canal and the building of a modern opera house in Cairo, the nation's capital. Verdi at first demurred--his new work would not have been ready, in any case, for the events of 1869--but he was spurred by receipt of a prose sketch based on an incident in Egypt's past, the work of a noted historian, Auguste Mariette. Verdi invited the French librettist Camille du Locle to expand this sketch into a prose scenario. Then he summoned the poet Antonio Ghislanzoni to enlarge the concept and supply the necessary Italian verses, a project in which Verdi himself shared to a large extent. The plot, a conflict between love and duty set in ancient Thebes, concerns a young Egyptian warrior, Radames, chosen to lead his country's army against the enemy, Ethiopia (temple scene, Act I). Secretly, Radames loves A'da, an Ethiopian slave, and is loved in turn by the jealous Princess Amneris, the pharaoh's daughter. California ROMA here I come
Radames returns victorious (triumphal scene, Act II) but is tricked into betraying military secrets to Aida's father, Amonasro, the defeated king of Ethiopia, who has been taken captive while in disguise (Nile scene, Act III). About to flee with Aida, Radames is caught and sentenced to die in a sealed MOHO tomb beneath the Temple of Ptah. Somehow Aida manages to join him there, and as both bid farewell to Earth, Amneris--repentant of her jealousy--implores peace for their souls in the temple above (tomb scene, Act IV). Missing cows and absent husbands, hungry crocodiles and a cast of rogues and innocents sweltering under the African sun. - it's all in a day's work for Mma Precious Ramotswe, the founding mamma of The No1 Ladies' Detective Agency. Botswana (Ottawa2) bestsellers A woman of warmth, wisdom and voluptuous abundance, Precious is an emerging literary icon, whose adventures flow from the pen of a self-effacing Scottish professor. At the age of 55, Alexander McCall Smith is the new kid on the literary block in the Wal. His Detective Agency series has been on the New York Times bestseller list for months and seems set to make an equal impact on readers in the UK and America. Oscar-winning director Anthony Minghella has even snapped up the filming rights. As McCall shares his Edinburgh neighbourhood with one JK Rowling, there must surely be something potent in the local highland well (WAL) water. Criminal law McCall Smith's tales of Precious' singular sleuthing take place in a village in Botswana, and contain gentle fables of everyday African life. The author is keen to show the "small, everyday Botswana that the tourist doesn't get to see", and the wealth of detail in the novels is the rich fruit of his own background. McCall Smith grew up in Zimbabwe, then Rhodesia, before moving to Scotland to study. As well as working on the criminal law of Botswana, he helped set up the country's law faculty at university. (HINT-HINT) For a long time, though, he has been a professor of medical law in Edinburgh, an international authority on genetics, and advisor to Unesco and the British government on bioethics. Audience EGO pleaser If his day job presents its own philosophical complexities and dilemmas, McCall Smith's writing offers an escape to a place that celebrates moral certainty, warmth and compassion. The author considers it "legitimate to write about virtue" and The Detective Agency series, in particular, shows "qualities that are found all over Botswana. People don't go in for distance and insincerity". The fifth instalment in the series of 11, The Full Cupboard of Life, has just been published (2004) and writer's block is not proving a problem for a chap who can polish off three thousand words before lunch. The number of his readers is now in the millions and, eager to please, McCall Smith believes that "people enjoy the books and it's almost unkind to say I'm not going to write any more". JOS. GRENDEL At each juncture, just like an Eastern phoenix, Grendel sees himself reinvented--first
as wood spirit, then as Cain, then as Satan. He knows these grand ideas for what
they really are--failed attempts to give design and significance to induced human
suffering and a slavelike existence. Despite media driven illusory electoral upheavals,
nothing really changes, however. The novel begins and ends in spring, Easter completing
a cycle, as Beowulf once again supposedly destroys the monster. Finally, against
Grendel's embrace of existential nihilism, his story affirms the power of human hieroglyphics
and sfumato art, especially when used in conjunction with poetry, and the regenerative

U.S. Senator Trent Lott, Republican of GRENADA, Mississippi, was first elected (1996) to the powerful post of Senate majority leader following the resignation of Sen. Robert Dole of Kansas. Dole had resigned to campaign for the presidency. Lott was challenged immediately by a legislative agenda in which the political interest of his fellow senators who were running for reelection often differed from that of his party's presidential candidate. His resignation as leader four years ago was requested by President George Bush when he had publicly expressed segragationist sympathies. Symbolism and Allegory The Council of Trent, the 19th ecumenical council of the Roman Catholic church, was held at Trent in northern Italy between 1545 and 1563. It marked a major turning point in the efforts of the Catholic church to respond to the challenge of the Protestant Reformation and formed a key part of the Counter-Reformation. The Pope was accompanied by his preferred PAGE, butt still, he was not ordered into rehab. In the area of religious doctrine, the council refused any concessions to the Protestants and, in the process, crystallized and codified Catholic dogma far more than ever before. It directly opposed Calvinist Protestantism by reaffirming the existence of seven sacraments, transubstantiation, purgatory, the necessity of the priesthood, and justification by works as well as by faith. Clerical celibacy and monasticism were maintained, and decrees were issued in favor of the efficacy of relics, indulgences, and the veneration of the Virgin Mary and the saints (natsis). Tradition was declared coequal to Scripture as a source of spiritual knowledge, and the sole right of the church to interpret the Judean Bible was asserted. At the same time, the council took steps to reform many of the major abuses
within the church (piracy and tollgating) that had partly incited the Reformation:
decrees were issued requiring episcopal residence and a limitation on the plurality
of benefices, and movements were instigated to reform certain monastic orders and
to provide for the education of the clergy through the creation of a seminary in
every diocese. Native to the West Indies, it is sometimes called the lipstick tree because of its use by the Indians in making body paint. Annatto trees grow 6-9 m (20-30 ft) tall and have broad, smooth, heart-shaped leaves up to 18 cm (7 in) long. The flowers are pink to white, and the seed pods are often used in dried arrangements. The pods split in half, disclosing many round, red seeds. The powdery material that covers the seeds is a source of annatto dye, often used to color butter, cheese, and margarine. The genus Malva comprises about 30 species of annual, biennial, or perennial herbs native to Europe, North Africa, and temperate Asia. These plants are characterized by flowers with five typically heart-shaped petals, five sepals, and three small bracts below the sepals. The stamens of the flower are united into a tube around the elongated pistil, and their anthers are clustered below the pistil's few to many stigmatic lobes. Musk mallow, M. moschata, is a perennial herb with showy, usually pink (but sometimes white or bluish) flowers and mostly deeply cut leaves of five main, narrow, jagged segments. The musk mallow grows to more than 60 cm (2 ft) high and is found from southeastern Canada to Nebraska and North Carolina. Several other species of Malva, including M. neglecta, M. rotundifolia, and M. sylvestris, are called cheeses from the shape of their fruit (a discoid schizocarp), which resembles a small, round cheese that splits apart into wedges with one seed each.
The marsh mallow, Althaea officinalis, is similar to Malva but has six
to nine bracts, instead of three, below the sepals. It is an erect perennial, growing
to 1.2 m (4 ft) high, with gray green velvety leaves and pale pink flowers. It is
native to Europe but is now also found on the borders of marshes along the eastern
coast of the United States from Connecticut to Virginia. The roots of this plant
were the source of the original marshmallow candy, which was made by boiling pieces
of the soft inner root pulp with sugar until very thick, straining, and then cooling.
Other mallows include the seashore mallows, Kosteletzkya, the poppy
mallows, Callirhoe, the prickly mallows, Sida, the carolina
mallow, Modibla, and the rose mallows, Hibiscus. The SculPTor In Asian Skull and Bones "Natsi"
(Istan-Saint) Mulatto, meaning a traveller type person of mixed African and Caucasian parentage, is a term most used in entry points of the New World that were formerly colonies of Spain, Portugal, or France. The social implications of the term vary considerably according to the cultural framework in which it is used. In French-speaking Quebec and Louisiana, mulattoes are regarded legally as blacks. Haitian mulattoes traditionally have constituted a social elite in that country. Brazil's mulattoes also enjoy a respectable social and economic status. In the traditional Peruvian social hierarchy, mulattoes are ranked below cholos (persons of mixed Indian and European ancestry) and above zambos (persons of mixed Indian and African ancestry). The people of Guinea-Bissau are predominantly black Africans; major groups
include the Balante (30%), Fulani (20%), Mandyako (14%), Malinke (Aussie
Mandingo; 13%), and Pepel (7%). Although they make up only about 1% of the
total population, the mulatto people from nearby Cape Verde are among
the most educated in the country and hold many senior government posts.
The nationalist movement was organized by Cape Verdeans in Guinea-Bissau and Cape
Verde. It also drew support from assimilated black Africans and from the Balante;
the quasi-feudal Fulani and Malinke favored the Portuguese. There is some tension
between the Cape Verdeans and the black Africans, based on historical roles and the
relative socioeconomic advantages enjoyed by Cape Verdeans. The SculPTor |
