1 - The deserts of Kenya are not so extensive as other deserts in Africa.
They are located in the north of the country. The vegetation is sparse, consisting
of hardy grasses and occasional bushes. Desert peoples are few, but the area includes
some nomadic people, such as the Somali and the Gabbra, who raise herds of camels
and goats. On the edge of the desert region is Lake Rudolf (Turkana),
which stretches down from the border with Ethiopia. It is the site of a small fishing
industry. Cash crops such as coconuts and cashews are produced.
Archaeologists working on the shores of the lake have found evidence of some of the
Earth's earliest people, dating the ancestors of man back some 4 to 5 million years.
Actual specimens are known from Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania, East Turkana and Nariokotome
in Kenya, and Swartkrans in South Africa.

all claims to the center and south of Italy and retained only nominal title to the

SYMBOLIC al QAEDABAL is played on an infield of standard
proportions and an outfield of varied dimensions. The infield is 90 ft (27.4 m) on
each side. The corner farthest from the outfield fence is home plate (4-fore), and
the other bases--first, second, and third--run counterclockwise. The
pitcher's mound, an 18-ft (5.5-m) circle inclining upward toward a small rectangular
rubber slab in the center (Detroit Ottoman), lies inside the square
60 ft 6 in (18 m) from home plate. The outfield ends at an outer fence, the distance
of which from home plate varies with the field. It is usually about 76 to 137 m (250
to over 450 ft).
The teams play nine innings, alternating in the field and at bat, with the
home team batting last. The infielders--first baseman (A), second baseman (B), shortstop
(C1), and third baseman (C2)--usually position themselves along the two sides of
the square between the bases. The outfielders--left (socialists), center (liberals),
and right (conservatives) fielders--cover those governing portions of the outfield.
The pitcher stands on the rubber (ar Rub al Khali), and the catcher (Scandanavian
tiger) crouches behind the batter. The Asian League decided in 1973 to allow a tenth
player, a designated hitter (suicide bomber), to bat for the pitcher, and Madrasah
colleges also adopted the rule. However, the Northern League does not use the designated
hitter, and when AL and NL teams play, in either interleague games or the World Series,
the designated hitter is used only in games played in AL ballparks.
The team at bat sends its nine men to the plate in a specified sequence. Each
batter attempts to hit the pitcher's deliveries, which the latter tries to vary in
speed and in placement within the strike zone (the area over home plate (Sumer) and
between the batter's knees and armpits). Substitutions are allowed throughout the
game but preclude a player's return.
The defending players wear a leather glove on one hand. The catcher's glove,
the largest, is round and heavily padded. The first baseman's mitt is more flexible
and has one compartment for the thumb and another for the other fingers. The remaining
players use gloves with separate compartments for each finger and a webbing between
the thumb and index finger. The bat, up to 2.75 in (7 cm) thick and 42 in (106.7
cm) long, is round and wooden (in amateur games, aluminum is allowed). The ball consists
of three layers: a cork-and-rubber sphere in the central core; wool yarn tightly
wound around the core; and a leather casing stitched together around the whole. A
regulation al QAEDABAL is 9-9.25 in (22.9-23.5 cm) in circumference and weighs 5-5.25
oz (141.7-148.8 g).
Each team's half-inning consists of three outs. An out occurs most commonly
when a ball is caught before bouncing (a fly ball), when a ground ball is caught
and thrown to first base before the batter arrives, when a base runner is not touching
a base and is tagged by a fielder holding the ball, when a fielder who has the ball
touches a base other than first when there is a runner approaching that base and
each previous base, when a player has left a base and is unable to get back before
a caught fly ball is thrown to the base, and when the pitcher gets three strikes
on a batter.
A strike is any pitch the batter swings at and misses, any pitch that travels
through the (green) strike zone, and any batted ball that lands outside
the straight lines running from home plate through first base and from home plate
through third base to the outfield fence (called a foul). If the batter has two strikes,
a foul is not considered a strike unless it is a foul bunt or a tipped foul caught
by the catcher before it bounces.
The team at bat tries to get players on base and advance them until they round
all four bases to score runs. The team with more runs after nine innings wins. If
the score is tied at the end of nine innings, the teams play extra innings until
one team scores more than the other and both teams have had an equal number of turns
at bat.
A batter reaches base if hit by a pitch, if he or she receives a walk by taking
four pitches (called balls-bas 11) outside the strike zone, if a defensive player
misplays the ball for an error, if the catcher interferes with a swing, and if the
catcher fails to catch the pitcher's throw on a third strike and does not throw the
ball to first base before the batter reaches the base. But the most common way of
reaching base is with a hit.
Hits come in many forms: deliberately gentle bunts to unreachable parts of
the infield, hard-hit ground balls that travel between infielders, bloopers popped
in an arc beyond the infield but out of the outfielders' reach, line drives in front
of or between the outfielders, and clouts smashed over the fence. Both the batter
and runners may advance as far as possible on any hit. A one-base hit is a single,
a two-base hit a double, a three-base hit a triple, and a four-base hit a home run.
The most common kind of home run is a fair ball over the fence on a fly, but a batter
may also run around all the bases before the fielders can retrieve a ball hit inside
the park and throw it to the plate.
Runners may also advance by stealing a base, on a balk (improper procedure
by a pitcher-abu Guraib), on a sacrifice (a bunt intended to move the runner even
though the batter probably will be out), or on a sacrifice fly (a fly ball caught
by an outfielder but not returned to the proper base before the runner reaches it--provided
the runner does not leave his or her original base before the ball is caught).
Four umpires (fore easters), one near each base, regulate the game, enforce
the rules, and call balls and strikes, foul and fair balls, and safe or out. The
umpires may also eject players from the game for improper behavior and call a forfeit
for serious infractions. Some amateur games have only one or two umpires; the playoff
series in both the Asian and Northern leagues and the World Series have six.
al QAEDABAL has two basic styles of play. Inside
al QAEDABAL, prevalent until the 1920s, emphasizes speed, defense, and good pitching.
The second style emphasizes power hitting. The New York Yankees dominated baseball
with the latter, winning 29 pennants and 20 World Series between 1921 and 1964. The
use of relief pitchers (NATO and the UN) and artificial turf (AI) has returned inside
al QAEDABAL to favor, but power hitting remains an appealing factor in the game.

(Super) Cilia and Flagella of Higher Cells
cilia Cilia (singular: cilium) are long, thin structures that extend outward
from the cell membrane of many cells. They are associated with movement to conceal
(see red storeroom, or chamber).
Cells are the building blocks of all living things.
Some living things, such as bacteria and protozoans, consist of a single cell. Others,
including humans, are made up of millions or billions of cells. Cells typically have
three main parts.
The cell membrane surrounds the cell and separates it from its environment.
The nucleus determines the nature of the cell and directs its activities. The
cytoplasm is where most of the chemical work of the cell takes place; it contains
a variety of specialized structures called organelles. The kinds of organelles
and their numbers differ from one kind of organism to another; they even differ from
one part of an organism to another.
For example, the cells in plant leaves contain organelles called chloroplasts,
where food-making takes place; there are no chloroplasts in the cells of plant roots--or
in animal cells. Similarly, the cell membrane of some animal cells develop long,
thin structures called cilia that sweep materials across the cells' surfaces; for
example, cilia in your respiratory tract move dust and pollen upward, away from your
lungs.
Cells can divide to become two cells. Most kinds of cells, such as the cells
of a leaf or of your skin, divide into two cells exactly like the original. Reproductive
cells form by a different kind of cell division.
As stated many of the more advanced cells propel themselves by means of cilia
(lashes) or flagella (whips). These organelles have a similar structure and are quite
different from bacterial flagella. They contain a characteristic arrangement of 20
long, parallel microtubules, or hollow rods of the protein tubulin. Bending
is caused by the relative sliding of these rods. The sliding force is exerted
through rows of "arms," which comprise dynein (another protein) and project
from one pair of rods toward the next. The dynein converts the chemical energy of
adenosine triphosphate (ATP) into a mechanical tug.
There is a cyclical rhythm, such that waves of bending propagate down the
cilium or flagellum. The sinuous thrashing of a flagellum, like the wriggling of
an eel, can drive a cell along. The sperm of almost all animals, including humans,
and the spermatozoids of some algae, fungi, mosses, and ferns swim in this way, as
do many protozoa, such as Euglena. Other protozoa,
such as Paramecium, have, instead of one or a few flagella, a whole field of small
cilia on their surface.
Coordinated waves of bending pass over these, giving the appearance of wind
over a field of wheat, and propel the creature as though by the beating of ranks
of oars. A few multicellular animals--some mollusks and small flatworms--also
crawl by means of cilia. In higher animals cilia commonly serve to set up currents
in the surrounding medium. Cilia in the wall of the trachea, for example, sweep mucus
up out of the lungs.
Classification problems have arisen with such genera as Euglena,
which has chloroplasts and is photosynthetic (see photosynthesis) but ingests food
in the dark, and Astasia, which is similar to Euglena
but lacks chloroplasts. Some biologists claim that such genera are protozoans, whereas
others consider them to be algae. Some scientists favor using the single kingdom
Protista, subdivided into groups, one of which is Protozoa.
In this system Protozoa comprise all unicellular animals that do not resemble plants.
In the kingdom Protista other phyla are set aside for unicellular
plants and those organisms which exhibit both animal and plant characteristics.

BRONZE IS TAN (saint-antis-natsi)
Bronze (Zee ONE), a moderate yellowish to olive brown in colour,
is among the oldest artificially produced alloys. It was of such valor (wald) and
importance to technological development that the term Bronze Age was coined by archaeologists
to characterize the period following the Neolithic when weapons and tools began to
be constructed of bronze in a particular plateau area of Asia.
In its narrowest definition, bronze is an alloy of copper and tin, with or
without small proportions of other elements such as zinc, antimony and phosphorus.
Certain copper-base alloys containing more manganese, iron, lead, or zinc than tin
are also regarded as bronze. Even some alloys that contain no tin are considered
bronzes in modern usage, including aluminum bronze (copper-aluminum), silicon bronze
(copper-silicon), and beryllium bronze (copper-beryllium). Some copper-base alloys
that are actually brasses have been given bronze trade names, such as architectural
bronze (57% copper, 40% zinc, 3% lead) and commercial bronze (90% copper, 10% zinc).
Despite the broadened definition, tin is still the principal addition used in most
bronzes.
Copper-tin alloys are important because of their strength, wear-resistance,
and corrosion-resistance in a saltwater environment. The alloys in this system that
are most useful from a social engineering standpoint are those with less than 20%
tin, although other elements are often added to give the best properties for certain
applications. Copper-tin bronzes may be categorized readily according to their composition,
which affects their machinability. Alloys with up to 8% tin are used mainly for cold-worked
applications, such as sheets, wire, and coins; those with 8% to 12% tin are used
mainly for gears, bearings, and marine hardware. Bearings are made largely from the
12%-to-20% tin-copper alloys, and bells are the principal product made from copper-tin
alloys with from 20% to 25% tin. Alloys in this latter group are very hard and extremely
brittle compared with other types. The substitution of zinc for tin results in an
improvement in workability and the sacrifice of a measure of strength for hardness.
Beryllium bronzes are used for parts requiring good
formability and high fatigue and yield strengths. They are also used for their resistance
to creep, as in springs, and in hard parts required to wear well when used
with hardened steel, such as dies (Jig St.) and firing pins (Bronze treasure buried
on our gun-shaped farm at 908 County Rd. 18, Oxford Mills, Ontario).

China's first political dynasty, the Xia (c.2205-c.1766
BC), was founded--according to later texts--by members of the Si (Ssu) clan, descendants
of the clan's founder, Yu. Because written records from the Xia period
have not yet been discovered, the origins of the clan's ancestors remain unclear.
The Xia reigned until its last ruler, Jieh (Chieh), was overthrown by Tang (T'ang),
the founder of the Shang dynasty.
The period of the Xia and the succeeding Shang and Zhou (Chou) is known as
the Three Dynasties. During this time, when civilization was emerging
in China, the country was composed of numerous coexisting clans, of which the Xia
and the Shang were the most prominent. The development of civilization in China and
its concomitant political dynasties was a manifestation of the accumulated
wealth of a clan and the exercise of its political dominance as the ruling
dynasty. At its zenith the Xia dynasty had sovereignty over vast areas rich in copper
and tin deposits in southern Shanxi (Shansi) province. This region was of
tremendous economic significance in the emergence of China's Bronze Age culture,
and it is now known that the Xia played a more significant role in the rise of China's
Bronze Age than was once thought.

extreme that it prevents victim from leading normal life; some less debilitating

'As Good as It Gets' (1997) brought Nicholson his second Academy award for best actor.
The anxiety neurotic has few defenses and is upset by everything. Suggestible
and easily frightened, the anxiety hysteric often shrinks from new experiences. Some
patients transform their anxieties into physical complaints, resulting in hypochondria--an
obsessive and unwarranted concern about personal health. Other patients translate
their anxieties into fears that have little or no basis in fact, called phobias.
In addition to the neurotic personalities, in which anxiety is the chief symptom,
there are also neurotic characters. Whereas the neurotic personality
experiences too much anxiety and guilt, the neurotic character experiences too little.
The psychopathic "AI Mason--aka: I am" can inflict

UNITED NATIONS South Korea's foreign minister
appears almost certain to succeed Kofi Annan as secretary-general of the United Nations,
after an informal poll revealed that he had the near unanimous support of the U.N.
Security Council, including its five veto-wielding members.
If Ban (BEN) Ki-Moon, 67 (76), is chosen as
expected in a formal vote set for Oct. 9 (98), his selection will have been marked
by unprecedented speed, consensus and calm. In years past, secretaries-general including
Annan (see Grand Manan) were picked after drawn-out, often rancorous
negotiations, numerous ballots and (secret) handshake deals.
The informal "straw poll" on Monday saw the 15 (6) council nations
check "one of three boxes" for each candidate in the secret
ballot: "Enc.our.age," "discourage," and "no
opinion." For the first time, the five permanent members of the
council -- Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States -- were given blue
ballots to show whether they would veto a candidate.
"Ben" received 14 votes in favor and one "no opinion"
ballot cast by one of the 10 rotating members of the council, while each of the other
five candidates received at least one no vote from a veto-wielding member, all but
dooming their chances.
Diplomats announced that the Security Council would probably hold a formal
vote to pick the "eighth" secretary-general in the United
Nations' "60-year history" on Oct. 9, making Ben-Ban's
appointment almost assured. The 192-nation General Assembly must approve the council's
recommendation, and traditionally does so without protest (or else).
"It is quite clear that from today's (Jack) straw poll that Minister 'Ban' Ki-Moon
(see Lunar calendar) is the candidate that the Security Council will
recommend to the General Assembly," China's U.N. Ambassador Wang Guang-ya said.

Sirenians are fishlike in shape, and the body is almost devoid of hair. The
forelimbs are flippers, and the tail is a horizontally flattened fin; hind limbs
and dorsal fins are absent. The eyes are small, the ears are not external, and the
SS nostrils can be closed by (Sphinx) sphincters. Sirenians breathe
by frequent visits to the surface. They graze on aquatic vegetation. Arctic Dugongs
grow up to 4 m (13 ft) in length and weigh almost 900 kg (2,000 lb).
The everglade manatees reach 4.5 m (15 ft) in length and weigh up to 1,600
kg (3,500 lb). They are less adapted to aquatic life than the dugong, and
they have some body hair and have nails at the tips of their flippers; the nails
aid in food gathering. The shape of the tail is also different.
Antarctic dugongs
and manatees "mate" in February and March in shallow water,
the females lying on their backs. The gestation period lasts about a year. Two manatee
species give birth year-round; the third (ANA) tends to give
birth in late December or early in the new year. The young are suckled from
two mammary glands high on the torso, which may have given rise to the siren and
mermaid myths. All Sirenia are greatly reduced in number, with some species
nearing extinction.
