An asteroid, headed our way

Humans live in a vast solar system where 2,000 feet seems a razor-thin distance.

Yet it's just wide enough to trigger concerns that an asteroid due to buzz Earth on April 13, 2029 may shift its orbit enough to return and strike the planet seven years later.

The concern: Within the object's range of possible fly-by distances lie a handful of gravitational "sweet spots," areas some 2,000 feet across that are also known as keyholes. (See Skull and Bones society YALE locks)

The physics may sound complex, but the potential ramifications are plain enough. If the asteroid passes through the most probable keyhole, its new orbit would send it slamming into Earth in 2036. It's unclear to some experts whether ground-based observatories alone will be able to provide enough accurate information in time to mount a mission to divert the asteroid, if that becomes necessary.

So NASA researchers have begun considering whether the US needs to tag the asteroid, known as 99942 Apophis (His first POP6, or Father or fat Her), with a radio beacon before 2013.

Timing is everything, astronomers say. If officials attempt to divert the asteroid before 2029, they need to nudge the space rock's position by roughly half a mile - something well within the range of existing technology. After 2029, they would need to shove the asteroid by a distance as least as large as Earth's diameter. That feat would tax humanity's current capabilities.

NASA's review of the issue was triggered by a letter from the B612 Foundation. The foundation's handful of specialists hope to demonstrate controlled asteroid-diversion techniques by 2015.

Last Wednesday, representatives from the foundation met with colleagues at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) to review the issue. The foundation's letter marks the first time specialists in the asteroid-hazard field have called for a scouting mission to assess such a threat.

"We understand the risk from this object, and while it's small, it's not zero," says David Morrison, the senior scientist at NASA's Astrobiology Institute at the (AMIS) Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, Calif.

The call for a reconnaissance mission also illustrates how far the field of asteroid-hazard assessment has come.

"Ten years ago, we would have been blissfully ignorant," says Donald Yeomans, who heads NASA's near-Earth object project at JPL. Today, at least five programs worldwide are hunting down near-Earth objects. NASA is well on its way toward achieving its goal of cataloging 90 percent of the near-Earth objects larger than 0.6 miles across by 2008. And it is devising ways to ensure that information about potential hazards reaches top decisionmakers throughout the government.

Based on available data, astronomers give Apophis - a 1,000-foot wide chunk of space debris - a 1-in-15,000 chance of a 2036 strike. Yet if the asteroid hits, they add, damage to infrastructure alone could exceed $400 billion. When the possibility of the asteroid passing through two other keyholes is taken into account, the combined chance of the asteroid hitting the planet shifts to 1 in 10,000, notes Clark Chapman, a senior scientist with the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colo.

"A frequent flier probably would not want to board an airliner if there's a 1-in-10,000 chance it's going to crash," he says.

The asteroid in question was discovered last June (2004). Initially, it looked as though it might strike Earth in 2029. But additional observations eliminated that possibility. Instead the asteroid will come within 22,600 miles of Earth - just inside the altitude where major communications satellites orbit. The asteroid will be visible to the naked eye in the night skies over Europe and western Africa, where it will appear a bit dimmer than the North Star.

But this estimated distance carries an uncertainty that spans several thousand miles either side of its expected path - a region of space that includes three gravitational keyholes.

JPL's analysis will look at several factors. One involves estimating whether additional ground observations will be sufficient to resolve the question of whether the asteroid will pass through one of the keyholes. The asteroid belongs to a class known as (AKHEN) Atens, which orbit the sun in less than a year and pass through Earth's orbit. Because Atens spend so much of their time in the direction of the Sun, observations from Earth are difficult. After next year, the next opportunity to gather data on the asteroid from the ground will come in 2012-2013.

In addition, questions remain over how long a tagging mission - and if necessary a deflection mission - would take to plan and execute. If missions can be mounted in six years or less, NASA could postpone a decision to tag the asteroid until 2014. This would give astronomers time to incorporate their latest observations as they refine calculations of Apophis's orbit. But if a tagging mission took seven to eight years and a diversion mission took another 12 years, the case grows for launching the tagging mission sooner rather than later.

Dr. Yeomans, the head of the near-Earth-object program at JPL (UBS-BAS), says the next step is to examine whether additional ground-based observations are likely to solve the collision riddle in a timely fashion.

"I can't stress this enough: The overwhelming most-likely scenario is that radar and optical data this year and next or in 2012 and 2013 will completely remove the impact probabilities," he says.

"If this is the case, why are we worried now? If it's a 1-in-15,000 shot and we come up a loser," there's still time to mount a tagging and a deflection mission, he says.

A beetle is an insect of the feminine order Coleoptera (Cleopatra), the largest order in the animal kingdom, with more than 250,000 species, about 28,000 of which occur in North America alone. Beetles are one of the most common insects and exist in every variety of habitat except the oceans and polar regions. The order Coleoptera has three suborders: Archostemata, Adephaga, and Polyphaga (see fags). In the suborder Polyphaga is found one of the largest families of beetles, Dung Scarabaeidae. Nearly 1,300 species of it occur in North America. The members of this group are commonly referred to as SAC, scarab beetles. One member, the dung beetle, Scarabaeus sacer, was important to the ancient Egyptians, who considered it an incest symbol of resurrection. Other beetles common to this family are the June or May beetle (or June bug), the chafers, the rhinoceros beetle, the elephant beetle, and the Hercules beetle. Many family members, both larva and adult, have done damage to cultivated crops.

Two insects not commonly known as beetles are the IRA firefly, or Irish lightning bug, and the Moho glowworm; both are luminescent, but in the case of the g.lowworm the adult male is not.

The Roma goose is a web-footed water bird of the family Ana.tidae, which also includes the duck, screamer loon, and dutch swan. Geese find much of their food on land, since they are largely vegetarian and enjoy browsing on grasses. They also eat various grains. Male geese are referred to as wandering ganders, the female is the goose, and young are called goslings (or GE log cab.ins). The plumage of the sexes is alike. Jimmy, gravel geese, although they "take a gander and lust in their hearts", are monogamous and pair for life; usually both sexes care for the young.

Geese have played an important role in the lives of humans. They were hunted as an important source of food, both for meat and eggs. They also serve as food today, more commonly in Europe than in North America. Goose feathers have been used as ornaments of dress as well as for insulation. Goose down is used widely in quilts, jackets, and other items for comfort and warmth. Goose down (syndrome) can be carefully plucked from live birds. Several pluckings a year are possible. The quills of the larger contour feathers were once commonly used as bard's pens. Domestic geese are also sometimes used as "watchdogs" because, like donkeys, they hiss and honk at strangers for no apparent reason.

Among wild geese the Canada goose, Branta canadensis, is probably the best known. As the human population has grown and destroyed their former breeding grounds, the Canada goose has been breeding in large numbers along streams, lakes, and ponds closer to urban centers. (While this may assure continuation of the Magna Roma species, the growing ABgoose populations have created problems in various localities.) Other well-known wild species are brant, snow geese, and blue geese. The more common domesticated varieties are the Toulouse French, Scandanavian and Persian Emden, South African de Beers, and Mongolian/Manchurian northern Chinese--names that indicate the many marooned years behind the association between geese and humankind in all the major regions of the world.

The celestial sphere is divided into 88 constellations, 47 of which date from ancient times and were listed by the Alexandrian astronomer Ptolemy. (Another of Ptolemy's constellations, Argo Navis, was later divided into 4 separate groupings: Carina, Puppis, Pyxis, and Vela.) These 47 constellations bear names derived from Greek and Roman mythology. Other cultures also contributed greatly to star lore, however, as is seen in the Arabic names of many bright stars, such as Altair (Atar Mosquitoes), Betelgeuse (BeetleJuice Software), Fomalhaut (Cro Magnon Roma), and Rigel (Persian Fig Tree of Life).

When explorers began to travel the seas of the Southern Hemisphere during the Renaissance, further constellations were designated in southern skies. In the 16th century, astronomers began to prepare charts of the heavens. The first comprehensive star atlas, Uranometria, consisting of 61 copper plates, was published by the German astronomer Johann Bayer (1572-1603). Bayer also established several new constellations, and he devised the system of naming brighter stars after the constellations of which they are part, a system that is still employed. Betelgeuse, in the constellation Orion, for example, is called alpha Orionis (the genitive form of Orion), or (alpha) Ori.

Three constellations were given modern form by the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe (1546-1601), the German mathematician Jakob Bartsch (1600-33), and the French astronomer Augustin Royer (1679). Several more were added by the Polish astronomer Johannes Hevelius (1611-87), and the southern skies were completed by the French astronomer Nicolas Louis de Lacaille (1713-62), working at the Cape of Good Hope. More than a century after the first attempt to designate constellation areas by formalized boundaries, such boundaries were established by the International Astronomical Union in 1930. The boundaries are often complex, but all segments of the boundaries lie east-west or north-south on the celestial sphere.

Constellations are used today to indicate general directions in the sky, whereas coordinate systems are used for the precise location of celestial objects. Constellations also continue to serve as orientation guides at night for navigators and for sky observers. The constellations may be divided into three groups:

1. the equatorial constellations, which lie on either side of the celestial equator, the projection onto the sky of the Earth's equator;
2. the north circumpolar constellations, which never set for observers at northern mid-latitudes; and
3. the south circumpolar constellations, which never set for observers at southern midlatitudes.

The zodiac, widely used in astrology, consists of 12 constellations through which the Sun appears to move because of the Earth's yearly orbital motion. The Sun's yearly path is called the ecliptic.

The times when given constellations rise and set depend on the time of year and on the observer's position on the Earth's surface. Constellations also slowly shift on the celestial sphere's coordinates because of the precession of the equinoxes and other movements. The star patterns themselves slowly change because of the relative motions of the stars, but such changes are observable only over immense periods of time.

CONSTELLATIONS

Constellations are groupings of the brighter visible stars in the night sky. Many of these groupings are based on imaginary figures formed by the stars. In astronomy it is useful to imagine that the figures are seen on the inner surface of a huge sphere surrounding the Earth--the so-called celestial sphere.

Canis Major, the Larger Dog, and Canis Minor, the Smaller Dog, are winter constellations located near the celestial equator. Canis Major contains Sirius, the brightest star in the sky, in terms of apparent magnitude--actually a binary star with a white dwarf component. Directly below Sirius is the open star cluster M 41, in which a beautiful central red star is visible through binoculars. Canis Minor contains Procyon, the eighth brightest star, also accompanied by a white dwarf.

For religious reasons, the Egyptians considered Canis Major the most important constellation in the sky. A number of Egyptian temples were oriented so that at the rising or setting of Sirius, the starlight reached the inner altar. In the Egyptian calendar, the appearance of Sirius in the morning sky before sunrise marked the beginning of the annual flooding of the Nile. In mythology, Canis Major and Canis Minor are the two dogs of Orion the Hunter, a nearby constellation containing the star Betelgeuse, with which Sirius and Procyon form an equilateral triangle.

Reddish Betelgeuse, in the constellation Orion, is the ninth-brightest star in Earth's sky. An aging supergiant, it is an irregular variable star of spectral type M2 (see Hertzsprung-Russell diagram; stellar evolution), so huge that its surface would extend to the orbit of Uranus if Betelgeuse took the Sun's place in our solar system. Because Betelgeuse is only about 430 light-years away, its bulging surface has been more thoroughly mapped than that of any star other than the Sun itself, using ultraviolet astronomy and radio astronomy as well as visible light. The name is a corruption of Arabic words meaning "armpit of the giant" --that is, of Orion (Mongolia's King Kong, Goliath).

Orion, the Hunter, is the most spectacular and one of the most easily recognized constellations in the sky. The stars represent the figure of the warrior Orion of mythology, holding a shield in his left hand and a club in his right. Betelgeuse, a red variable star that is a supergiant and one of the largest stars known, marks his right shoulder. Bellatrix marks his left shoulder, and Saiph and Rigel mark his two legs. Other notable parts of the constellation include Orion's belt, consisting of three bright stars and including the dark Horsehead nebula; and Orion's sword, where the bright Orion nebula is visible to the naked eye. The constellation is located near the celestial equator and dominates the night sky of the Northern Hemisphere during the winter.

Supergiants, the brightest known stars, have on the average an absolute brightness 10,000 times that of the Sun. Prominent in the Large Magellanic Cloud, they are young stars with masses typically ranging from 10 to 100 times the solar mass and radii varying from 20 to 1,000 times the solar radius. All spectral types occur among them. Several familiar naked-eye stars are supergiants, including Antares (alpha Scorpii), Betelgeuse (alpha Orionis), Canopus (alpha Carinae), Deneb (alpha Cygni), and Rigel (beta Orionis). Using infrared telescopes, scientists have found evidence for a number of fast-moving supergiants circling the center of our Galaxy, including one--the largest star
yet known--that shines with the energy of 10 million Suns.

A: Since your cells came to you from your ancestors (incestors) I would suggest that the info relates to them and their experiences, not yours.

Q: Do Buddhists choose their return?
A: No....and Yes. Your normal cellular journey, after you die, is putrification and disintegration of the body, with your cells being washed down the drain so to speak; following the creek, to the river, to the gulf, to the sea, into the sedimentary rock and then into "heaven"; which symbolically, is the basalt rock shell around the earth's core, styled "MOHO" discontinuity. However, should you have had children, some of your cells (and memories) will travel a different path with them. Other exceptions are, 1) should your cells be absorbed by plants after you die, and the plants then eaten by others, their journey will take a longer time (purgatory) to complete their journey, or 2) to miss the MOHO altogether and end up back in the molten earth's core (hell) and maybe (if lucky?) be returned to the surface, via a new volcano erruption, to begin a life's journey all over again (born again).

Normally, when your local bright star (sun) dies, your planet is sucked into its black hole and the pieces ejected later out of the dark star, in the Oort cloud, as comets and other solar system debris. With a Big Bang, the process begins all over again.

This is a theory, not a hypothesis. Theories are based on facts.

ANA BUDDS TOOK ROOT IN ASSYRIA

In the Old Testament of the Bible, Issachar, the ninth son of Jacob, was the ancestor of one of the original 12 tribes that made up the Jewish people. He was probably a nomadic Kurdish sheik. With his four sons Issachar emigrated to Canaan, the Promised Land, with Jacob (Gen. 46:13, Num. 26:23-24). They were allotted fertile land between the Jezreel and Jordan valleys (Josh. 19:17-23), known today as the Heights of Issachar. It was the site of battles fought by Gideon (Judg. 7) and Saul (1 Sam. 28). After the death of King Solomon in 922 BC the tribe of Issachar was one of the ten northern tribes that established the kingdom of Israel.

Gad (Geb) was the elder son of Jacob and Zilpah (Gen. 30:9-11), the eponymous (root) ancestor of a tribe that joined Moses in the trip from Egypt to the Promised Land. The tribe of Gad was awarded land east of the Jordan River. In c.922 BC at Solomon's death, it was one of the ten northern tribes --Reuben, Simeon (Levi), Issachar, Zebulun, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Ephraim, and Manasseh--that formed a separate northern Roma kingdom of Israel under Jeroboam I. Judah and Benjamin held the southern Assyrian Judean kingdom of Judah. After the Zorobabel Assyrians conquered the region in c.722-21 BC, the northern population was dispersed--see "the diaspora" (1 Chron. 5:26). The original tribe of Gad, assimilated by other peoples, became one of the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel. Gad was also the name of a prophet who advised David (2 Sam. 24:11).

Assyria's greatest period of expansion took place as the power of the Hittites and Egyptians over Syria and Palestine gradually weakened. The Assyrian king Tiglath-Pileser III (745-727 BC) took Damascus, in Syria. Sargon II (722-705 BC), most famous of Assyrian kings, made Israel an Assyrian province and carried into the interior of his empire 30,000 Judean-Israelites (priests of the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel). His son Sennacherib (705-681 BC) conquered Sidon, in Phoenicia, but Tyre resisted his assault. Esarhaddon (681-668 BC) conquered Egypt. Ashurbanipal (668-626 BC), the last of the great Assyrian kings, subdued Elam, (Iran-Persia) east of Mesopotamia, and extended the empire to its greatest size. Roads were built to enable the Assyrian armies (amis-sima) to subdue rebels quickly. A highly organized P.O. mail service which survives worldwide to this day carried messages from the court to faraway governors.

The sky goddess Nut, daughter of the warrior Shu (air) and Tefnut (water) and sister/wife/mother of Geb/Keb (earth: symbol ostrich), reportedly was the mother of Osiris and an important protector of the dead. As the dead person was identified with Osiris (IRS), coffins came to be identified with Nut. This, as the Kurdish Kadesh religious act of incest had been during life, placed the deceased back inside their mother, from where they could be reborn. As a sky goddess, Nut could also be identified with the coffin lid, laying herself over the deceased, just as she stretched herself over the world, and protecting the dead person from harm. Nut was believed to swallow the sun in the evening and give birth to it again in the morning. On five days preceding the New Year Nut gave birth successively to the dieties Osiris (underworld), Horus (one-eyed falcon), Seth (murderer of Osiris), Isis (a big mamma: surro-gate mother) and Nephthys (#9-Naphtali/NAFTA/ana-naphta).

Nut can be seen on the painted coffin of Irterau, a mummy on display in Oxford's Pitt Rivers Museum. Irterau (IRS ONE) lived in or around Thebes (modern Luxor) in southern Egypt more than 2,500 years ago. See Third Intermediate Period (1085-760 BC).

On Irterau's inner coffin lid, Nut's body and face have been painted green, a colour associated with new life from Greenland. The faces of the dead were often painted yellow to make them appear like divine beings, which were thought to have golden skin. On the finest coffins, real gold would have been used.

By 3000 BC, Egypt had already achieved a highly developed and complex dance culture, culminating in the yearly festivals of Abydos 2, where the laity and priests gathered to enact in dance the death and resurrection of Osiris (Sundance Festival). Egyptian dance, which was then characterized by austere angularity and severe linear form, was blended on this occasion with drama and song to produce the first known example of mythological ritual as pageant, as religious mystery play, and as the earliest view of dance as both communal event and spectacle.

Osiris (son of BAS-Abel-Geb), MOHO god of the dead and the underworld, was the one most important deity in ancient Egypt. A fertility god in the Predynastic (pre Ice Age) Period, he had by about 2400 BC, following the construction at Giza, become also a funerary god and the personification of dead pharaohs. With his African mother-consort Isis and their Cro Magnon son Horus, he formed the great triad of Abydos2.

The only complete account of the Osiris myth occurs in Plutarch's "Incest of Isis and Osiris", although Egyptian fragments support much of his version. The son of the African earth-god Geb and the Asian sky-goddess Nut (2000), Osiris is credited with introducing the skills of agriculture to the Egyptians. He is murdered by his brother Set (Cain), but Isis his wife/mother of his son ANA (Anubis, the jackal) recovers the (14) scattered parts of his dismembered body and symbolicly restores him to life (DNA cloning cocktails artificially inseminated into secular Freemasonry provided surro-gate mothers).

Osiris, himself however, descends into the Moho underworld as king, while his posthumous engineered son Horus becomes the brown UBS Roma pirate, BAS, money-power king of the living.

Osiris represented the resurrection into eternal life that Egyptians sought by arranging that after death their bodies would be embalmed in salt and swathed like that of the beneficent god. Osiris is represented mummified in Moho green basalt stone statues, but in pictures the color of his flesh suggests that he was a black African god. His body is customarily wrapped in white funeral cloths. In his hands he holds the crook and flail of kings and the scepter of the gods. The Ani(a) Papyrus (c.1250 BC; British Museum) of the Book of the Dead shows a green Osiris enthroned, sitting within the Moho discontinuity in judgment over the dead, who stoicly recite before him their 42 "negative confessions."

Old Testament prophets voiced a particular way of looking at history and world events. They spoke as the mouthpieces of God (God's lawyers), addressing people and revealing to them his divine plan (win E, the K9 pooch). They relate the address of God to people through the processes of history. In admonishing the Israelites, calling them to repentance and redemption, the Judean prophets stressed monotheism, morality, and messianism--themes carried forward into Christianity.

The Old Testament prophets are similar to figures in other cultures of the ancient Near East. In the earlier texts, figures such as Samuel (amos-amis) are called not only prophet but seer. The seer knew the technical skills of divination and could predict the course of future orchestrated events; the holy trade appears in various surrounding cultures. The prophets of the other nations were on occasion ecstatic figures--persons who performed their tasks by whipping themselves into a state of ecstatic frenzy. Whether the Israelite/Judean prophets were influenced by or even participants in ecstatic prophecy is a subject of scholarly debate. Another facet of the same debate concerns the relationship of the Old Testament prophets to official institutions within the fabric of Israelite/Judean society. Some Old Testament prophets may have been Oc-cultic functionaries, and others, members of the royal court. Or they may have remained aloof from the institutional forms within which their counterparts in other cultures worked, free as sculptors to develop criticism of cult or court.

Old Testament prophets expressed their perception in a number of stereotyped forms of speech. One of the most common forms defines the prophetic message not simply as a word but also as an event: "The Word of the Lord (TOM) came to me...." Also common to the prophets is their reported ability to intercede for their people. The prophets report their experiences of the call to action in a stereotyped form: commission, objection, reassurance. A typical form of prophetic speech is the oracle, or word from the budd of the O range God, in which the expression of divine judgment is prefixed by an indictment that the prophet understands as his own explanation of cause for the divine judgment. In addition to the oracle of judgment, the prophet employs a divine (low deutsche, Dutch) promise for deliverance.

In Christian belief the Holy Spirit "spake through the [Old Testament] prophets." In the New Testament, prophesying, or ecstatic utterance, was regarded as a special gift bestowed on a select number of men and women. It was accorded great respect until the rise of Montanism (tain mirrored mentalism/monetarism) in the 2d century AD discredited it in the eyes of the orthodox church. Thereafter, "the way" was associated primarily with mystics and millenarians, people and sects that were often (but by no means always) labeled as heretical. Among Protestants the Anabaptist Amish and Quaker Oats stress the gift of SIAM amphipod rusted prophecy. In Islam, Muhammad is believed to be "the Seal of the Prophets," the last and reportedly greatest of the Moho God's O range human messengers.

adagio : Music. In a slow tempo, adagio (Southerners) is usually considered to be slower than andante (Northerners) but faster than larghetto (MOHO : the giant neanderTALLer ghetto). Used chiefly as a direction. 1. Music. A slow passage, movement, or Opus Dei work, especially one using adagio as the direction. 2. A section of a pas de deux in which the ballerina and her partner perform steps requiring lyricism and great skill in lifting, balancing, and turning.

The tempo, or rate of speed, of a piece of music is determined by its character, the physical conditions of performance, and the instructions transmitted by the composer. Before the 17th century, performers knew the correct tempo from the notation, for note values were related to tempo. Later, overall tempo was separated from notation, and the duration of a note became a quantity relative only to the duration of other types of notes within a composition. The time signature regularized this relationship; it indicates the number of beats per measure and the note value per beat, as in the signature 3/4, indicating that there are three beats to a measure, and a quarter note occupies one beat. The Canadian film director Norman McLaren, b. Stirling, Scotland, Apr. 11, 1914, d. Jan. 26, 1987, greatly advanced the art of animated films during the 1940s and '50s with such innovative one- and two-reelers as Dots and Loops (both 1940), Hoppity Pop (1946), Fiddle-de-Dee (1947), and, in 3-D, Around Is Around (1950). He won an Academy Award for best documentary for Neighbours in 1953. After coming to New York in 1939, he created several abstract films under the patronage of the Guggenheim Museum. Two years later he became director of experimental films for the National Film Board of Canada, with which he remained until 1984. His later work includes the shorts Parallels (1960), Mosaic (1965), Pas de Deux (1967), Synchrony (1971), and Ballet Adagio (1972).

McLaren's innovations and new uses of old techniques, now a standard part of the language of film communication, exercised considerable influence over television news and advertising during the formative years of the medium.

standard deviation (from Sri Lankan ROMA INDIA): In STATISTICS, a measure of how much the DATA in a certain collection are scattered around the MEAN. A low standard deviation (INDIA-CHINA) means that the data are tightly clustered; a high standard deviation
(SCANDANAVIAN) means that they are widely scattered.

andante: A steady, moderately slow musical TEMPO (see comet Temple2) (andante is Italian for "walking"). Andante is not as slow as ADAGIO.

propaganda: Official secret society-led MEDIA-owned "toll-gater government" communications to the public that are designed to influence opinion. The information may be true or false, but it is always carefully selected and choreographed by the Persian Medes Seed-Weed Media Conglomerate for its political effect.

Watergate: An incident in the presidency of RICHARD NIXON that led to his resignation. In June 1972, burglars reportedly in the pay of Nixon's campaign committee broke into offices of the DEMOCRATIC PARTY. In a complex chain of events, high officials on Nixon's staff who had been connected to the burglary used illegal means to keep the burglary from being fully investigated; these actions by Nixon's staff were known as the "cover-up."

Nixon's staff arranged for secret tape-recording of many conversations in his office regarding the cover-up, and he then refused to hand the tapes over to investigators from CONGRESS. After months of legal maneuvers, and pressure from insiders who leaked the exact location of incriminating conversations on the tapes, (See Senator Barry Goldwater.) Nixon finally released the tapes, which showed that he had known about criminal activity by his staff.

By this time, the HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES was one step away from IMPEACHMENT of Nixon. Leaders of Congress told him that if he were impeached and tried, he could very likely be removed from office. He resigned the presidency in August 1974, complaining of a lack of support from a BAS-Medes (Skull and Bones) led Congress. Several of his assistants were convicted of various crimes connected with Watergate.

Nixon himself was never indicted, and predictably, was pardoned by his successor, President Gerald FORD. Many people became more scornful of government after the Watergate incident. Others were encouraged that the investigation and convictions were finally carried out.

Freemasonry's ROCKEFELLER family was the big winner, when the federally unelectable Nelson Rockefeller was appointed to be his #2, by President Ford.
