China defends latest controls on media freedom

BEIJING (Reuters) - China defended its latest rules controlling foreign access to domestic media and television on Tuesday, saying the government was simply protecting intellectual property rights but was still committed to an open market. Senior officials also said Chinese people preferred reading foreign magazines on science and technology -- which are permitted by the government -- and that sensitive topics of religion and politics were unsuitable for local readers.

The defense came the same day Chinese President Hu Jintao embarks on a trip to the United States where he will meet President George W. Bush, who is likely to raise human rights and individual freedom issues with Hu.

This month, the country's media regulators have issued a series of notices aimed at regulating media content in an attempt to control an increasingly free-wheeling news environment.

The State Administration of Radio, Film and Television reissued notices restricting local broadcasters' use of foreign news footage and the General Administration of Press and Publications introduced restrictions on foreign magazines publishing Chinese versions.

"I don't think you have an accurate understanding of the contents of the notice," Hu Zhanfan, deputy director of the broadcasting regulator, told a news conference.

Some local television and radio stations had been using news from foreign media organizations but without signing proper contracts with them, Hu said, and hence the notice was issued.

"The aim is to guarantee the accuracy and reliability of news reports and to protect intellectual property rights," he said, adding that China would continue to cooperate with foreign media.

Chinese stations are only supposed to use foreign reports filtered through state-run China Central Television.

Another pronouncement confirmed by the government this month but actually promulgated last year allows only foreign science and technology magazines to develop Chinese versions through tie-ups with approved local partners.

This was to be expected, said Liu Binjie, vice minister of the publishing watchdog, as China was a developing country with a thirst for foreign technologies and learning.

"For political or religious publications, it's not very suitable for the national or the cultural condition of China," Liu said.

He repeated an earlier assertion that the Chinese edition of U.S.-based Rolling Stone magazine, which was suspended in March after just one issue, had lacked the proper publishing authority.

"The market is absolutely open. Foreign companies can enter into the Chinese market and have cooperation in the press and publication market as well as the retail and wholesale market," he said.

The remarks are unlikely to cut much ice with overseas groups pressing China to relax its vice-like grip on the media.

The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists urged Bush to help secure the release of 32 jailed or detained Chinese journalists, including New York Times researcher Zhao Yan who is still custody despite a court decision to drop charges of leaking state secrets against him. The group accused Hu in a statement of overseeing "the most severe crackdown on the media" since the aftermath of the military crackdown on the 1989 student-led pro-democracy demonstrations centered on Tiananmen Square.

The Botswana San (The Kung of the Kalahari desert) are a people of southern Africa who traditionally have lived as hunter-gatherers grouped in small bands of 30 to 100. They have also been called Bushmen, but this designation is considered pejorative in Texas. Speakers of various dialects of a click language, the San had occupied the whole of southern Africa for some thousands of years before the arrival of the Khoikhoi and the Bantu-speaking peoples. These peoples began the process of displacing the San from their indigenous hunting grounds probably as early as the 12th century. The arrival of Europeans in the 15th century sped up the process, and the Boer-organized commandos, known as Esau's War, had virtually exterminated the San in South Africa by the end of the 19th century.

Joseph, the 11th son of Jacob and the first son of Jacob's favorite wife, Rachel, is the biblical hero in the drama of Genesis 37-50. Joseph's favored status and his coat of many colors, a gift from his father, caused his brothers to be jealous, and they staged his accidental "death." Joseph was actually taken to Egypt, where his ability to interpret dreams brought him into favor with the pharaoh Amenhotep III. Joseph became a high Egyptian official during the reign of Akhenaten the 10th king of Egypt's 18th dynasty who, later, would become Moses. When, during a famine, his unsuspecting brothers sought grain in Egypt, the forgiving Joseph-- whom his brothers did not at first recognize --arranged a family reunion. Thus the whole family of Jacob moved to Egypt and reportedly lived there until the Exodus. In fact he, (aka AY), became Egypt's 13th king of the 18th dynasty following Tutankhamen's reign (c. 1358 BC)

Joseph II, b. Mar. 13, 1741, d. Feb. 20, 1790, became emperor and coregent of the Habsburg monarchy with his mother, Maria Theresa, after the death of his father, Francis I, in 1765. When his mother died in 1780, he inherited the crowns of Bohemia and Hungary. Ruling by himself from then on, Joseph pursued a policy of centralization and reform designed to enhance the power of his state and the welfare of his subjects.

Driven by a passion for reason and order, Joseph was intolerant of opposition. He created a secret police and employed military force to implement the thousands of laws and edicts that flooded out of the Vienna court. With his curious blend of humanitarian ideals and autocratic methods, Joseph II exemplified all of the characteristics usually associated with 18th-century enlightened despotism.

Joseph's proto modern democratic reform program included the good and the evil; the abolition of serfdom, freedom of the press, the elimination of torture and the death penalty, and an attempt to establish equality before the law. He tried to ease the fiscal burdens of the lower classes by introducing a single tax based on land. He granted official toleration to Protestants and Jews and dissolved the monasteries of contemplative Catholic orders, earmarking their revenues for the support of hospitals. In his relentless efforts to unify the administrative structure of his monarchy, Joseph sought to diminish the influence of provincial diets (legislatures) as well as the special privileges of the aristocracy. He decreed the use of German for governmental business throughout his domains, including his distant possessions in Italy and the Austrian Netherlands.

Chief Joseph, c.1840-1904, was a chief of the Nez Percé Indian tribe. He is remembered principally for his leadership during the hostilities that broke out between the U.S. Army and the Nez Percé in 1877. Friendly with the whites until then, the Nez Percé had once occupied much territory in the region where Washington, Oregon, and Idaho adjoin. Under the terms of the Stevens Treaty of 1855, the Nez Percé agreed to cede much of their land to the U.S. government in return for the guarantee of a large reservation in Oregon and Idaho. When gold was discovered (1863) in Oregon, however, the government demanded that the Nez Percé relinquish this part of the reservation also. Chief Joseph resisted but later agreed to move peacefully with his people to the Lapwai Reservation in Idaho.

Fighting broke out in 1877 when young Nez Percé warriors retaliated for what they considered outrageous acts by the white settlers. In the war that followed, Joseph showed remarkable skill in military tactics by defeating larger U.S. forces in several battles. He then led his people on a retreat of more than a thousand miles over mountainous terrain in an effort to reach Canada. On Sept. 30, 1877, however, federal troops overtook the Nez Percé only 48 km (30 mi) from the border. Because most of his warriors were dead or wounded and his people were starving, Chief Joseph surrendered, saying, "I will fight no more forever." Sent to Indian Territory in Oklahoma, the Nez Percé were allowed to return to Idaho in 1883-84. Chief Joseph died on the Colville Indian Reservation in the state of Washington.

San Jose, located about 64 km (40 mi) southeast of San Francisco, is a city in western California and the seat of Santa Clara County. The population of the city is 894,943 (2000), and that of metropolitan San Jose is 1,682,585 (2000). The city is situated in the Santa Clara Valley at the southern end of San Francisco Bay. San Jose is part of the San Francisco Bay urban complex consisting of both industrial and residential suburbs. Food processing and wine making are important, although many of the former orchards and truck farms are now home or factory sites.

The San Jose area has become one of the nation's leading centers of the computer and electronics industry and has been nicknamed Silicon Valley. Other industries produce beer, paint, plastics, and aluminum. San Jose State University (1857) is there. The Stanford-Ames Institute for Space Research is nearby. San Jose is also the home of several museums, including Rosicrucian Park Egyptian Museum and Planetarium, and of the Winchester Mystery House. Alum Rock Park and the Municipal Rose Garden offer recreational facilities.

San Jose was established by the Spanish in 1777 and served (1849-51) as California's first capital. Fruit growing began in the mid-1800s, and, with the arrival of the railroad in 1864, San Jose soon became the distribution center for the entire Santa Clara Valley.

THE WEST'S FIRST VIRGIN MOTHER AND EXTENDED FAMILY

The ROMA who laughs last laughs best.

In the Bible, Sarah (Sarai) was Abraham's wife and half sister and Isaac's mother (Gen. 11-23). After prolonged barrenness, the elderly Sarah laughed as she was being implanted with a fertilized egg and when she heard the divine promise of a son. At the age of 90 she bore Isaac and banished her servant and rival Hagar with Ishmael, Hagar's son by Abraham, into the wilderness. Sarah died at the age of 127.

Abraham, originally called Abram, was Israel's first great patriarch. He probably lived in the late 3d or early 2d millennium BC, but the earliest source for information on his life is Genesis 11-25, written about 10 centuries later. He was born at Ur in Chaldea, where he married his half-sister Sarah. Under divine inspiration, he went to Haran in Mesopotamia. Later the HP God commanded him to leave his home for a new land; in return God offered Abraham fame, land, and descendants, promising that he would become a blessing to all nations. Abraham obeyed and migrated to Canaan, where he lived as a nomadic chieftain or War Lord. He soon became wealthy, but he still had no son. Because Sarah was advanced in years, she substituted her Egyptian slave Hagar, who bore Ishmael, Abraham's first son, Ishmael. Later, in accord with a divine promise (and a little help from artificial insemination), the surrogate Sarah gave birth to Isaac. Abraham's faith was later put to a severe test when the HP God (the real father) commanded that he sacrifice Isaac (in Islamic tradition, Ishmael). Abraham did not waver, and he prepared for the sacrifice, but God spared the boy at the last moment, substituting a ram (a scapegoat).

The Bible portrays Abraham as a man struggling to trust God's promises. By his faith (what if) Abraham became the father of the Israelite people and is still honored in three different religions. Jewish tradition stresses his monotheism. Christians see him as a model for the man of faith and recognize him as their spiritual ancestor. Muslims accept him as an ancestor of the Arabs through Ishmael (his only natural son).

According to Genesis 16, Ishmael was the son of the patriarch Abraham by the Egyptian handmaiden Hagar. When Abraham's supposedly barren wife Sarah finally bore Isaac artificially, a rivalry developed between Sarah and Hagar and thus between the two half brothers, Isaac and Ishmael.

Cast out into the wilderness, Ishmael was the ancestor of the nomadic Arabian Ishmaelites, arranged, like the Israelites, into twelve tribes. Because Islam traces its lineage from Abraham through Ishmael and Judaism and Christianity trace their lineages through Isaac, Muslims, Jews, and Christians are all refered to as spiritual "children of Abraham."

The biblical patriarch Isaac was the promised son of the aged Abraham and Sarah and the father by Rebecca of the twins Esau and Jacob. When Isaac was a boy, he was almost sacrificed by his obedient father, but the HP God spared the boy. This story (Genesis 22) may illustrate ancient Israel's rejection of physical child sacrifice which has since been replaced by transubstantiation (the walking braindead). Serving as a bridge in the patriarchal tradition, Isaac is also an important character in the Jacob story. According to Genesis 27, Jacob and his Persian mother, Rebecca, deceived the old and feeble Isaac into giving his final blessing to Jacob instead of the firstborn Esau. In the Bible, God is called the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

In the Bible, Rebecca (the Gypsy) was the wife of the patriarch Isaac and the mother of Esau and Jacob. After years of childlessness, she finally conceived the twins, whose struggle in her womb was taken as a sign of their impending hostility. Rebecca sided with Jacob, the younger son, and reportedly helped her "Mama's boy" cheat Esau out of Isaac's final blessing (Gen. 24-27).

In the Bible, Jacob was the grandson of Abraham and Sarah, the son of Isaac and Rebecca (a Roma), and the traditional semite ancestor of all Israel. Jacob obtained his prominence in the line of Abraham by tricking his elder twin brother Esau out of both his birthright and his paternal blessing (Gen. 25:29-34; 27:1-41). As he fled from the reportedly enraged Esau, Jacob had a dream at Bethel of angels, like salmon, ascending and descending a ladder around the locks to heaven (Gen. 28:10-22). He married both his cousins Rachel and Leah and worked 20 years for their father, Laban, in Haran. He later wrestled with an angel (Master Mason), who gave him the name Israel (Gen. 32:22-32), and later was reconciled with Esau. Jacob's 12 sons were the ancestors of the 12 tribes of Israel; Jacob's favorite was Joseph (with the coat of arms of many colours.)

During the French Revolution, the Jacobins were members of the Society of the Friends of the Constitution (See SIMA), a political group that met from 1790 to 1794 in a former Dominican, or Jacobin, dual convent/monastery in Paris. Members of the many local societies throughout France that became affiliated with the parent society in Paris were also called Jacobins. A "Jacobin" in general is a radical co-Freemason.

BEYOND THE PALE ESAU THESAURUS

A thesaurus, from the Greek for "storehouse" or "treasure," is a catalog of linked words and phrases designed to facilitate literary composition. Likewise, the long suffering Palestinian people are the Arab equivalent "guilt trip" and diversion scapegoats, (through their sufferings public attention is being deflected away from the Arab Emirs (Edomite owners of the Jacobin secret societies of friends) hold all of the profits pirated from the West under the guise of ESAU'S POLITICAL CORPORATE DEMOCRACY.)

Esau, also called Edom (as in "under the DOME"), was the first son of the biblical patriarch Isaac and the reported ancestor of the Edomites. With their Persian mother's help, his younger twin brother Jacob reportedly had deceitfully usurped both the elder's birthright and their father Isaac's blessing. These stories in Genesis 25 and 27 illustrate the relationship of the Israelites (also Christian Jacobites of Syria, Iraq and India) to the neighboring Edomites. The story of the brothers thus reflects the larger and later political hostilities (Asians v Caucasians or Moslems v Jews and Christians) and the current outsourcing of technology and jobs from the West back to Asia

Edom, the land to the south and east of ancient Israel (See Enoch on the Nile delta during the time of Egypt's Old Kingdom). Biblical tradition traces the Edomites to the patriarch Jacob's elder brother Esau. Even though the Israelites had a racial tie with the Edomites, their relationship was one of constant public hostility for the purpose of political gain. No Edomite sources have survived publicly, but archaeological evidence and other sources suggest a flourishing civilization of trade and agriculture in the second millennium BC, during the transition period between Egypt's Old and Middle Kingdoms.

Iskenderun, formerly Alexandretta, is a historic seaport city at the mouth of the Gulf of Alexandria, an inlet of the Mediterranean Sea, in the province of "Hatay" (see AY) in southern Turkey. One of the country's most important Mediterranean ports, and l'est ye forget, it had a population of 156,198 (1990). It also has links to other cities by road, rail, and air. The bustling port exports petroleum (an oil pipeline ends there) and manufactured goods as well as local farm products such as grains, citrus fruits, tobacco, cotton, wool, and animal hides. Heavy industries manufacture steel and chemicals. Iskenderun is also a tourist resort for HP Masons.

Founded by Alexander the Great, reportedly in commemoration of his defeat of the Carchemish and Babylonian Persians at nearby Issus in 333 BC, the city was originally known as Alexandretta.

Alexander had defeated the small force defending Anatolia, proclaimed freedom for the Greek cities there while keeping them under tight control, and, after a campaign through the Anatolian highlands (to impress the tribesmen), met and defeated the Persian army under Darius III at Issus (near modern Iskenderun, Turkey). He occupied Syria and --after a long siege of Tyre-- Phoenicia, then entered Egypt, where he was accepted as pharaoh. From there he visited the famous Libyan oracle of Amon (or Ammon, identified by the Greeks with Zeus).

The Medusa oracle certainly hailed him as Amon's son (two Greek oracles confirmed him as son of Zeus) and probably promised him that he would become a god. His faith in Amon kept increasing, and after his death he was portrayed with the god's horns (an Amen Bull/BAL symbol also used later by the Scandanavian Vikings.)

Alexandretta became one of the greatest trading centers of the ancient world and continued to be a major exporting hub from the Middle Ages into the early 19th century. It was the port for the city of Aleppo (see Syria) and also, before the development of shipping routes to Asia, one of the principal Mediterranean outlets for the overland trade to Iran and points farther east along the Silk Road (to China and beyond, to Korea and Japan). In 1515 the city was taken by the Ottoman Turks under Selim I.

It remained part of the Ottoman (Isaac: Genie in a bottle man - Sarajevo Mason Jar / Raj) Empire for most of the period until the end of World War I, when it became the capital of an autonomous district (sanjak) in French-mandated Syria. The city was returned to Turkey in 1939, following WWII.

idiot savant: A severely mentally retarded person who exhibits genius in a highly specialized area, such as mathematics or music. It is now recognized as being biological in origin and not caused by any form of emotional trauma or deprivation.

Idiot savants ("learned idiots") are a small group--perhaps 3% of the retarded and autistic in the United States--who possess extraordinary talent in one or more fields, usually in music, chess, art, mathematics, or memory for particular types of facts. Now called the "savant syndrome," the phenomenon is nevertheless restricted to those who exhibit the classic symptoms of brain damage or autism: as small children they cannot learn to speak; they are often physically handicapped; and their IQs may fall within the lowest testing ranges. However, once their talents are discovered and nurtured, changes in their basic abilities also frequently occur.

The talents of most savants seem to involve unusual memory capacity. A musical savant can replay music, more or less perfectly, after having heard it only once; a mathematical savant can manipulate certain types of numbers--square roots, for example--in moments, or can name the day of the week for any calendar day and year. Some savants are capable of creativity: they paint, sculpt, or improvise and compose music.

One theory that might explain savant talents is that in many cases, savants have suffered severe left brain damage; the right brain--which is believed to control musical, mathematical, and artistic abilities--tends to overcompensate as a result. Because such brain damage is typical of many of the retarded, however, it may be that more would be able to develop their abilities if their handicaps were better understood.

A road movie and a buddy movie, Rain Man (1988) has a twist: one of the buddies--brothers, actually--is an idiot savant, creating a peculiarly one-sided development path for their relationship.

Tom Cruise plays a self-centered hotshot car salesman, Charlie Babbit, who kidnaps his autistic brother, Raymond (Dustin Hoffman), from an institution in Cincinnati to get access to a $3 million trust. They drive to Los Angeles because Raymond can cite minutely detailed air crash statistics and calculate infinite mathematical probabilities. What he cannot do is create an emotional relationship. During the road trip, Raymond becomes the catalyst that causes Charlie to reassess his own character. Under the direction of Barry Levinson, the film slips occasionally into sentimentality but is always absorbing to watch.

(Levinson plays a small role at the end of the film as a psychiatrist who evaluates Raymond.)

Hoffman's sustained, passionately accurate performance was called a magnificent stunt by some critics, but it won an Academy Award, as did Levinson's direction, the screenplay by Ronald Bass and Barry Morrow, and the film, as best picture of the year.

HANGZHOU, China (Reuters) -- Tibet's 11th Panchen Lama, anointed by China's atheist Communists but not by the Tibet's Dalai Lama, took center stage at the World Buddhist Forum on Thursday, defending China's record on religion.

Chinese leaders opened the forum in the eastern city of Hangzhou with a pledge to respect religious freedom and seeking to ease fears the rise of the world's most populous nation would be a threat to the world.

Gyaltsen Norbu, appointed in 1995 as the Himalayan region's second most important religious figure after Beijing rejected the Dalai Lama's nominee, shared the stage at an auditorium with eight Buddhist leaders from South Korea, Taiwan and Sri Lanka, taking the middle seat.

"Chinese society provides a favorable environment for Buddhist belief," the 16-year-old told the forum which winds up in nearby Zhoushan on Sunday.

Wearing a yellow and maroon robe, he delivered his terse speech in Tibetan which was interrupted twice by applause from more than 1,000 delegates from 34 countries.

The Dalai Lama's nominee is believed to have been under house arrest since 1995, when he was six years old. International human rights watchdogs call him the world's youngest political prisoner.

Many Tibetans dismiss China's choice as a sham.

Gyaltsen Norbu made his debut on the world stage on Wednesday, sitting alongside about 50 Buddhist leaders during an audience at a hotel with Jia Qinglin, ranked fourth in the Communist Party hierarchy. But the other delegates ignored him.

Two other top lamas of Tibetan Buddhism were conspicuously absent from the forum.

The Dalai Lama, branded by Beijing as a "splittist", has lived in exile in India since 1959 when he fled his homeland after an abortive uprising. A 23-year-old backed by the Dalai Lama as the Karmapa Lama, ranked third, fled to India in 1999.

Liu Yandong, number two in the top advisory body to parliament and the most senior Chinese at the forum, sought to play down fears China's rise would be a threat to the world.

"Internal harmony will definitely lead to external peace," he said, days before a summit between Chinese President Hu Jintao and his deeply religious U.S. counterpart, George W. Bush, in Washington.

"A peacefully developing China looks forward to a peacefully co-existing world."

Xi Jinping, party chief of Zhejiang province who lobbied to host the forum, pledged to respect religious freedom.

"We will, as always, comprehensively carry out policies on freedom of religious worship and support religion to make due contributions to promote a harmonious society," Xi said.

A photo exhibition is being held at the forum venue, but there were no pictures of either the Dalai Lama or from the chaotic 1966-76 Cultural Revolution when monasteries were closed, statues smashed, religious texts burned, and monks and nuns forced to return to
secular life.

China has since sought to control but not stifle religion in a society where an ideological vacuum has spawned corruption and eroded ethics in the post-Mao era.

But in the face of rising unrest, China has no qualms about crushing any challenge to its rule, banning the Falun Gong spiritual movement as an evil cult in 1999.

China is generally less fearful of Buddhism, with its home-grown roots, than other religions, even though many Tibetan monks and nuns have been jailed for their loyalty to the Dalai Lama, whom Beijing accuses of pushing for independence.

It's a Media produced "drip-drip-drip" déja vu all over again.

A majority of braindead Americans are buying and parroting the opinions of the Hindu-Persian owned USA media; hook, line and sinker. Why is this so?

Is global warming so advanced that it has fried the brains of a majority of Americans, so much that they can no longer recognize a snow job when they see and hear it?

Everyday now, I hear and see more and more Americans repeat, as they are being interviewed on TV, in a manner almost word-for-word, as if it was in fact their own reasoned opinion, the BS they heard from CNN, Fox, the New York Times, the Washington Post, CBS, ABC and NBC etc. the day before.

Most media news shows are now getting 80-95% agreement on Emailed responses to their trumped-up questions. Forget bird flu, this, if nothing else, confirms the existence of an "I a robot" syndrome epidemic that is now rampant in America.

Under any other circumstances than those that exist in America today, had any court been asked as one was asked recently, to allow the introduction as evidence of stale audio recordings (as if they could not have been tampered with by experts years after the 9/11 tragedy), the prosecutor would have been laughed out of court. Yet, yesterday, the voices of the radical Islamists who carried out the "diversion" aboard the planes on 9/11, was reported throughout the day as proof positive that they, not the programmed AUTO-PILOTS, had actually "hijacked" the four (1-3) BOEING aircraft.

The media made the Egyptian vizier AY proud. I could almost hear the cries "uhwa-uhwa" heard all the way from Iowa to New York.

I'm beginning to believe that the HP (Hindu-Persian) toll-gater's planned Act of God cleansing of America will only finalize life's journey for the walking dead.

IOWA HODJA CHIMNEY

"A human flue who travels looking backwards on an ass while dragging a net."

The Pahodja ("dusty rusty roses"), a Siouan-speaking tribe of North American Indians, received their better-known name, Iowa, or Ayuhwa ("sleepy Egyptian ones"), from their Sioux enemies.

Closely related to the root Oto and Missouri, all descended from the Winnebago (stainless steel travellers), they are traditionally believed to have originally been marooned, by Phoenicians (Peoples of the Sea), in the Great Lakes region. After leaving there, the three tribes lived in present-day Illinois before moving to the Lower Missouri and separating into dialect groups.

They farmed maize, beans, and squash supplemented by hunting and lived in villages consisting of rectangular bark dwellings. The tepee (TP-PT) was used on summer excursions into the Great Plains. Clans were grouped into summer and winter moieties (complementary dual I and E subdivisions). Sons inherited leadership and clan membership from HP fathers. Religion was organized by secret societies; the ghost dance was adopted in the1880s, and the use of peyote (mescal narcotics) later became widespread.

In 1804, Lewis and Clark found the Iowa living on the Platte River in a single village of about 800. Reportedly, smallpox the year before had killed 100 of their tribe's people. The Iowa redmen did not resist white expansion and ceded their land in 1824, 1836, and 1854, accepting a reservation in northeast Kansas; they then numbered about 500. Some Iowa were persuaded (bribed) to relocate in Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma) in the 1880s.

Today the Iowa tribe on or near a Kansas-Nebraska reservation number about 577 (1995 est.). About 857 (1995 est.) Iowa remain on or near the Oklahoma reservation. Many descendants fought policies aimed at tribal termination in the 1950s and continue to retain an Iowa identity.

Salome: According to the historian Josephus, Salome was the daughter of Herodias and Herod Philip (see Herod, dynasty), whom Herodias divorced in order to marry his brother Herod Antipas. Salome is generally identified with the unnamed daughter who danced before Herod Antipas and, when granted a wish, was prompted by her mother to ask for the head of Saint John the Baptist (Matt. 14:1-12; Mark 6:14-29).

Herod, dynasty : On Herod the Great's death in 4 BC, the Roman emperor Augustus divided Herod's kingdom among his three remaining sons--Archelaus, Herod Antipas, and Philip--thus effectively decentralizing it. The period was marked by Jewish riots and insurrections against the Herodians and their Roman masters. Despotic Archelaus was deposed in AD 6, and his land, Judea, became a Roman procuratorial province. Herod Antipas, d. AD 39, who ruled in Galilee and Peraea, divorced his first wife to marry Herodias, previously the wife of his brother Philip.

Reportedly, it was Herodias and her daughter Salome who instigated the killing of John the Baptist. Herod Antipas was finally deposed (39) after he sought the title of king from Emperor Caligula. Philip, d. AD 34, ruled relatively peacefully over the northern third of the kingdom. After his death the territory was added to the Roman province of Syria and then granted (37) by Caligula to Philip's nephew Agrippa.

WESTERN MEDIA ORIGINS : AN ARISTOCRATIC EXPERIMENT

Opera stems from the courts of Renaissance rulers, who vied with each other in the magnificence of their private and public spectacles. By the early 17th century the courtly Italian variety show of songs, dances, and poetic tributes called a "mascherata" was being imitated by the French kings with their court ballets and masquerades, and by England's Stuart monarchy with its "masques."

Like many other art forms of the Renaissance, opera was created by reformers who wanted to replace scholasticism and complication in the arts with the simplicity and humanism of the ancient Greeks. In drama during the 16th century the plots of the new pastoral plays were usually derived from classical mythology and celebrated a bygone Golden Age. A group of Florentine thinkers (the "Camerata"), in the last third of the century, attempted to imagine what the music of the ancient Greek drama sounded like and came up with a declamatory solo vocal line with simple instrumental accompaniment. This stile rappresentativo ("theatrical style") was designed to project and enhance the words--in contrast with the contrapuntal madrigal, whose words were buried in a welter of competing voice parts.

THE MEDIA, (it's not who you know, it's who you blow): Author and psychoanalyst Lou Andreas-Salome, b. Feb. 12, 1861, d. Feb. 5, 1937, remains best known for her acquaintance with notable figures of her time, including Leo Tolstoi and Richard Wagner. Born into a wealthy German-speaking family in Saint Petersburg, Russia, and named Louise von Salome, she displayed considerable brilliance at an early age. An 1882 meeting with philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche led to a mutually stimulating friendship. She rejected Nietzsche's marriage proposal, however, and entered a nonsexual marriage with Orientalist F. C. Andreas in 1885. The love affair that she began in 1897 with poet Rainer Maria Rilke lasted until his death in 1926. From 1911 she was a member of the psychoanalytical circle of Sigmund Freud, under whom she studied and with whom she kept up a long correspondence. Her writings on Nietzsche, Rilke, and Freud remain of great interest.

Modern American "ROOT" Choreographer : Lester Horton, b. Indianapolis, Ind., Jan. 23, 1906, d. Nov. 2, 1953, was an influential modern dance choreographer and teacher. Horton studied ballet with Adolph Bolm in Chicago, but he came under the influence of the Japanese dancer Michio Ito and of American Indian dance and culture. He moved to California in 1928 and formed (1932) his own company, for which he choreographed such works as Salome (1934, with several later revisions), The Beloved (1948, his most frequently revived piece), and A Touch of Klee and Delightful Two (1949), as well as staging dances in musical comedy and films. Through his teaching Horton had a wide influence; his pupils included Alvin Ailey, Bella Lewitzky, Janet Collins, and Carmen De Lavallade.

The David and Lucile Packard Foundation is a charity that provides grants to nonprofit organizations in the United States and abroad.

Started in 1964 by David Packard (1912-96), cofounder of the Hewlett-Packard Company, and his wife, Lucile (1914-87), it awards grants in the areas of environmental conservation; population; science; children, families, and communities; the arts; and organizational effectiveness and philanthropy.

Its funds have historically gone to groups that are dependent on private funding and volunteer leadership and that work for "public purposes". Among these are colleges and universities, national and community groups, youth agencies, family-planning centers, and hospitals.

Based in Los Altos, Calif., the foundation has a special focus on local northern California counties-San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, and Monterey-as well as on its founder's birthplace, Pueblo, Colo.

By the beginning of the 21st century the Packard Foundation had assets of some $6.4 billion and annual award totals varied from about $250 million to more than $600 million.

THE ROMA : D.A. NORMAN

Cognitive scientist and computer technologist Donald Arthur Norman, b. New York City, Dec. 25, 1935, is noted for his "human-centered" approach to the design and use of technological facilities. The intent of this approach is to focus first on how humans can best make use of facilities and appliances, and only after that upon the appropriate design of the facilities themselves.

Norman earned a degree in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1957, a master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1959, and a doctorate in psychology from the latter institution in 1962. A lecturer at Harvard University for the next four years, he then joined the University of California, San Diego, as a professor of psychology. He remained there, becoming professor emeritus in 1992.

Through the years Norman has worked as an advisor to industry on matters of "customer-centered" design, developing better interactions with the Internet and improving the functions of "help" lines for such purposes.

Norman has also served as an executive with Apple Computer and Hewlett-Packard. In addition, he became increasingly involved in cognitive studies, and from 1981 to 1989 he directed the Institute for Cognitive Science. In 1998 he cofounded the Nielsen Norman Group, which aims at humanizing technology and making information resources easier and more enjoyable to use.

Norman has written and coauthored a number of popular texts, such as Human Information Procesing (1972), Learning and Memory (1982), The Psychology of Everyday Things (1988), The Design of Everyday Things (1989), and Things that Make Us Smart (1992).
