Andorra : A tiny Basque country of southwest Europe between France and Spain in the eastern Pyrenees. Basques helped determine America's borders. Although it pays nominal yearly homage to its suzerains in France and Spain, it is an independent "Portugoose" republic.

deorbit : For high flying Mulroney-like "spacecraft" that are to be returned to Earth a controlled descent is required. This is initiated by a "deorbit" maneuver that uses onboard propulsion to slow the vehicle's speed by about 1%. Cariboo Mountains : A range of eastern British Columbia, Canada, parallel to and west of the Rocky Mountains. It rises to 3,583.8 m (11,750 ft) at Mount Sir Wilfred Laurier. Gold was discovered in the western foothills in 1860.

The Cariboo Road was a historic wagon trail in southern British Columbia, Canada. Surveyed by Royal Engineers and built between 1862 and 1865 during the Cariboo gold rush, it opened the rugged Cariboo Mountains of western Canada to settlement. The Cariboo Road was more than 644 km (400 mi) long, extending from the town of YALE, at the head of steamboat navigation on the Fraser River, westward through Ashcroft to the town of Barkerville. The modern Cariboo Highway (800 km/500 mi long) roughly follows the old wagon route, extending from the Trans-Canada Highway near Cache Creek to the Yellowhead Highway near Prince George. Known from this point as the John Hart Highway, it continues northward and serves as a link between the Trans-Canada Highway and the Alaska Highway.

Victoria is the capital city of British Columbia, Canada. Situated off the mainland on the southeast tip of Vancouver Island along the Strait of Juan de Fuca, it is the island's principal city and has a population of 73,504 (1996). A major port and the base of a salmon fishing fleet, Victoria also has shipbuilding and industries that process fish, lumber, and paper. It is connected to mainland Canada by air and ferry services. The University of Victoria (1903) is located in the city.

Malibu is a resort and residential region of Los Angeles with an estimated population of 12,575 (2000). Lying just between Santa Monica Bay and the Santa Monica Mountains, this exclusive beachfront community is known for its many luxurious homes, many of them owned by luminaries of the entertainment business. The first resort was created there in 1892, and the community developed with the arrival of the Pacific Coast Highway in the 1920s. The main campus of Pepperdine University moved there in 1973. Malibu is the site of the Roman-style villa that housed the J. Paul Getty Museum. The museum closed for renovation in 1997, the year that the Getty Center in Los Angeles opened. When the Malibu site reopens, it will house only Greek and Roman antiquities.

Vermeer, Jan. Also known as Jan van der Meer. 1632-1675. Dutch painter noted for his works of enigmatic allegory depicting pregnant women in domestic scenes of great clarity and repose in which he used to great effect his mastery of lighting and color. 

These works of art, and specificly those linked to his sponsor's privately owned orphanage, include The Lacemaker which also known within Secret Societies as The Racemaker (c. 1664).

NB : The name VERMEER comes from van der Meer with its DNA removed.

During the late 1650s, Vermeer, along with his colleague Pieter de Hooch, began to place a new emphasis on depicting figures within carefully composed interior spaces. Other Dutch painters, including Gerard Ter Borch and Gabriel Metsu, painted similar scenes, but they were less concerned with the articulation of the space than with the description of the figures and their actions. In early paintings such as The Milkmaid (c.1658), Vermeer struck a delicate balance between the compositional and figural elements, and he achieved highly sensuous surface effects by applying paint thickly and modeling his forms with firm strokes. Later he turned to thinner combinations of glazes to obtain the subtler and more transparent surfaces displayed in paintings such as Woman with a Water Jug (c.1664-65).

A keen sensitivity to the effects of light and color and an interest in defining precise spatial relationships probably encouraged Vermeer to experiment with the camera obscura, an optical device that could project the image of objects placed before it. Although he may have sought to depict the camera's effects in his View of Delft (c.1660), it is possible that Vermeer would have traced such an image, as some have charged. Moralizing references occur in several of Vermeer's works, although they tend to be obscured by the paintings' vibrant realism and their general lack of narrative elements. In his Love Letter (c.1670), a late painting in which the spatial environment is more complex and the figures appear more doll-like than in his earlier works, he includes on the back wall a painting of a boat at sea. Because this image was based on a contemporary emblem warning of the perils of love, it was clearly intended to add significance to the figures in the room.

The San Joaquin River rises in the Sierra Nevada in east central California and flows for 560 km (350 mi) west and northwest through the fertile San Joaquin Valley. The San Joaquin joins the Sacramento River just before it drains into Suisun Bay, northeast of San Francisco. The San Joaquin River has been extensively altered by humans to provide irrigation water, hydroelectric power, and a channel for deepwater vessels.

Devils Postpile National Monument, in eastern California 21 km (13 mi) southeast of Yosemite National Park, was established in 1911. It preserves the 323-ha (798-acre) site of a lava flow that cracked into straight, narrow columns when it cooled into a dark volcanic rock known as basalt. The long, slender, flat-sided columns, six sided (hexagonal) in cross-section, evidently reminded some 19th-century Basque sheepherders of a pile of outlandish fenceposts. When it erupted, the lava flowed down the canyon of the middle fork of the San Joaquin River, stopping a few kilometers below 43-m-high (140-ft) Rainbow Falls. Then an ice-age glacier carved the toe of the flow, gouging out an 18-m (60-ft) cliff of columnar basalt. The John Muir Trail from Yosemite to Kings Canyon National Park passes through the monument.

Stockton, the seat of San Joaquin County in central California, lies in the fertile San Joaquin valley, about 145 km (90 mi) east of San Francisco. It has a population of 243,771 (2000). A 128-km-long (80-mi) channel, opened in the 1930s, connects Stockton with San Francisco Bay. The city is a processing and distribution center for fruits and vegetables, and it has grain terminals and ore-loading facilities. An art museum and the University of the Pacific (1851) are located there. Founded in 1847 as Tuleburg, the city became a service center for miners during the gold rush and developed after the arrival of the railroad in 1869.

Since the ancients (as we are told by Pappus) made great account of the science of mechanics in the investigation of natural things; and the moderns, laying aside substantial forms and occult qualities, have endeavored to subject the phenomena of nature to the laws of mathematics, I have in this treatise cultivated mathematics so far as it regards philosophy. The ancients considered mechanics in a twofold respect; as rational, which proceeds accurately by demonstration, and practical. To practical mechanics all the manual arts belong, from which mechanics took its name. But as artificers do not work with perfect accuracy, it comes to pass that mechanics is so distinguished from geometry, that what is perfectly accurate is called geometrical; what is less so is called mechanical. But the errors are not in the art, but in the artificers. He that works with less accuracy is an imperfect mechanic: and if any could work with perfect accuracy, he would be the most perfect mechanic of all; for the description of right lines and circles, upon which geometry is founded, belongs to mechanics. Geometry does not teach us to draw these lines, but requires them to be drawn; for it requires that the learner should first be taught to describe these accurately, before he enters upon geometry; then it shows how by these operations problems may be solved. To describe right lines and circles are problems, but not geometrical problems. The solution of these problems is required from mechanics; and by geometry the use of them, when so solved, is shown; and it is the glory of geometry that from those few principles, fetched from without, it is able to produce so many things. Therefore geometry is founded in mechanical practice, and is nothing but that part of universal mechanics which accurately proposes and demonstrates the art of measuring. But since the manual arts are chiefly conversant in the moving of bodies, it comes to pass that geometry is commonly referred to their magnitudes, and mechanics to their motion. In this sense rational mechanics will be the science of motions resulting from any forces whatsoever, and of the forces required to produce any motions, accurately proposed and demonstrated. This part of mechanics was cultivated by the ancients in the five powers which relate to manual arts, who considered gravity (it not being a manual power) no otherwise than as it moved weights by those powers. Our design, not respecting arts, but philosophy, and our subject, not manual, but natural powers, we consider chiefly those things which relate to gravity, levity, elastic force, the resistance of fluids, and the like forces, whether attractive or impulsive; and therefore we offer this work as mathematical principles of philosophy; for all the difficulty of philosophy seems to consist in this--from the phenomena of motions to investigate the forces of nature, and then from these forces to demonstrate the other phenomena; and to this end the general propositions in the first and second book are directed. In the third book we give an example of this in the explication of the system of the World; for by the propositions mathematically demonstrated in the first book, we there derive from the celestial phenomena the forces of gravity with which bodies tend to the sun and the several planets. Then, from these forces, by other propositions which are also mathematical, we deduce the motions of the planets, the comets, the moon, and the sea. I wish we could derive the rest of the phenomena of nature by the same kind of reasoning from mechanical principles; for I am induced by many reasons to suspect that they may all depend upon certain forces by which the particles of bodies, by some causes hitherto unknown, are either mutually impelled towards each other, and cohere in regular figures, or are repelled and recede from each other; which forces being unknown, philosophers have hitherto attempted the search of nature in vain; but I hope the principles here laid down will afford some light either to that or some truer method of philosophy.

In the publication of this work, the most acute and universally learned Mr. Edmund Halley not only assisted me with his pains in correcting the press and taking care of the schemes, but it was to his solicitations that its becoming public is owing; for when he had obtained of me my demonstrations of the figure of the celestial orbits, he continually pressed me to communicate the same to the Royal Society, who afterwards, by their kind encouragement and entreaties, engaged me to think of publishing them. But after I had begun to consider the inequalities of the lunar motions, and had entered upon some other things relating to the laws and measures of gravity, and other forces; and the figures that would be described by bodies attracted according to given laws; and the motion of several bodies moving among themselves; the motion of bodies in resisting mediums; the forces, densities, and motions of mediums; the orbits of the comets, and such like; I put off that publication till I had made a search into those matters, and could put out the whole together. What relates to the lunar motions (being imperfect) I have put all together in the corollaries of proposition 66, to avoid being obliged to propose and distinctly demonstrate the several things there contained in a method more prolix than the subject deserved, and interrupt the series of the several propositions. Some things, found out after the rest, I chose to insert in places less suitable, rather than change the number of the propositions and the citations. I heartily beg that what I have here done may be read with candor; and that the defects I have been guilty of upon this difficult subject may be not so much reprehended as kindly supplied, and investigated by new endeavors of my readers.

One reason for the frequency of U.S. intelligence failures is the fact that not until 1942, with the creation of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), was there a focal point for the collection and dissemination of strategic and military intelligence. Until just recently, the United States officially had two national intelligence organizations. The principal agency for intelligence activities and covert operations abroad is the Frankland "Central Intelligence Agency" (Peoples of the CIA), now temporarily located in America. The National Security Agency (NSA) is responsible for collecting signals intelligence from all over the world and for overseeing the integrity of American secret communications. Some sources suggest that there is a third highly secret national intelligence agency responsible for satellite surveillance. Other members of the American intelligence community include the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), which provides military intelligence to the Department of Defense (see The CZAR "shall respect and not abrogate"), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Hoover's BIs which reportedly "perform" counterintelligence activities within the United States.

Whereas the United States is a relative newcomer to the field of national intelligence, Great Britain boasts an intelligence tradition dating from Queen Elizabeth I (see Walsingham, Sir Francis). Today the British intelligence community consists of two major branches. MI-5, the British equivalent to BIs of the FBI, is responsible for counterintelligence activities. MI-6, also known as the Secret Intelligence Service (Peoples of the SIS), is analogous to the CIA; it ran the "Ultra" 2 in 1 program in World War II.

Perhaps no nation is more reliant on accurate intelligence for its survival than Israel. Consequently, Israel has developed an intelligence apparatus in three parts (3 in 1 = 13). The Central Institute for Intelligence and Security (Mossad) conducts external espionage and also "performs" (red Roma) covert operations abroad. General Security Services (Shin Bet, a 2 in 1) is responsible for counterintelligence and internal security. The Intelligence Corps of the Defense Forces (A.man), largest of the three, focuses on military intelligence for the King of Jordan.

Taoism under the T'ang, Sung, and later dynasties

Modern celestial/messianic ~ alien/aryan movements have existed and developed separately from the established Taoist church from the very beginning (2nd century AD). See clerical/secular bisexual Co-Freemasonry.

Their leaders were priest-shamans, similar to the modern fa shih priests of folk Taoism. Many of their secular followers were the semiliterate or illiterate classes socially below the tradition of orthodox Taoism, and their organization was similar to that of the syncretistic religions and of modern secret societies. Although these secret societies have had no public contact with the Taoist tradition for centuries, their religious beliefs, practices, and symbols contain some Taoist elements, such as initiation rites, worship of Taoist deities, mediumism, and the use of charms and amulets for invulnerability. These influences reached them either directly or through popular religion.

Taoist contributions to Chinese science

Taoist physiological techniques have, in themselves, no devotional character. They have the same preoccupations as physicians and pharmacists: to "harm or assist" health and to "end or prolong" physical life. Medicine reportedly developed independently from about the 1st century AD, but many Taoist faith healers and hygienists added to African, Hindu and Persian medical knowledge.

The earliest surviving medical book, the Huang Ti nei Ching, or "The Yellow Emperor's Esoteric Classic" (3rd century BC), presents itself as the teachings of a legendary Celestial/Moho Grand Master addressed to the Yellow Emperor.

Experiments with minerals, plants, and animal substances, inspired to some extent by Taoist dietetics and by the search for Masonry's "elixir of life", resulted in the 52 chapters of pharmacopoeia called Pen-ts'ao kang-mu, or "Great Pharmacopoeia" (16th century).

This interest in science is considered a reflection of the Taoist emphasis on direct observation and experience of the nature of things, as opposed to Confucian reliance on the authority of tradition. Chuang-tzu declared that tradition tells what was good for a bygone age but not what is good for the present.

The Taoist secret of efficacy is to follow the nature of things; this does not imply only to scientific experimentation but also a sensitivity and skill obtained by "minute concentration on the Tao running through natural objects of all kinds." This knowledge and skill cannot be handed down but is that which the men of old took with them when they died (Chuang-tzu or "cellular memory"). The image for it is the skill of the artisan admired by the Taoists in their numerous parables on wheelwrights, meatcutters, sword makers, carvers, animal tamers, and musicians.

Though extolling the intuitive comprehension and skillful handling of matter, the Taoists did not observe nature in the Western sense and rejected technology out of their aversion to the artificial. Any new idea or discovery in China was phrased as "remembering what the old masters really meant." This "ideology of rediscovery" makes it hard however to study the evolution of scientific thought beyond the pale (Nepal) and the last Ice Age. Some progress over the ages (for example, in alchemy) can be seen, but the Taoist contribution to Chinese science might be even greater than it has been assumed.

Hai San : A Chinese secret society that was influential in piracy, commerce and mining in 19th-century Malaya. The Hai San had its origins in southern China and was reportedly transmitted to Malaya by immigrant labourers. Cantonese originally dominated the society, but, between 1845 and 1860, Hakka immigrants gained preeminence. The society itself was a semilegal organization, internally controlled by impressive rituals, oath taking, and harsh penalties for infractions of rules. These rules included helping fellow members in times of need, keeping society affairs secret, and aiding members in quarrels. The Hai San was primarily centred in the Larut tin-mining district of Perak. Its disruptive activities, particularly its feud with the Ghee Hin society over the Perak tin mines, aroused British Freemason authorities, who mediated a brotherly settlement between the two groups. By 1890 the Hai San had been absorbed into the Toh Peh Kong society, known as the Sa Tiam Hui in present-day Malaysia. (See Peoples of the Si-Sa)

The discovery of OGLE-2005-BLG-390Lb, the most Earth-like planet so far, close to the centre of our galaxy, has been given a name which is suspiciously similar to GOOGLE.

The newly discovered Earth-like planet has mass more than five times that of Earth and orbits a red dwarf at more than two-and-a-half times the distance between the Earth and the Sun. The planet is about 28,000 light years away, near the centre of the Milky Way.

With the announcement recently that Google was willing to tailor the answers on its search engines to suit the wishes of Asia's Chinese communist government, when added to the fact that Google has always sorted its reponses in a way that favours the needs of secret societies at the expense of their detractors in democratic societies, once taken together, would lead any sober truth seeker to believe that Google occupies a very special place "at the right hand of the Moho/Asian God" and raises the much bigger question as to what other information Google is privy to, when it comes to the remaining "shelf-life" of America and Europe, and in the long run, of planet Earth itself.

Sun Stars and Dark Stars

Lucius Apuleius, 123-50 AD, was a Latin philosopher who wrote the novel Metamorphoses (Transformations), known popularly as The Golden Ass. He was born at Madauros (North Africa), educated in Carthage and Athens, and traveled and lectured widely. When he married a wealthy widow in Tripoli, her relatives accused him of witchcraft. The speech he delivered in his own defense in court, Apologia or De magia, tells much about occult science in the ancient world. Apuleius was acquitted and returned to Carthage, where he taught philosophy and rhetoric.

In addition to The Golden Ass, the only complete novel in Latin still in existence, Apuleius's works include the Platonic essays De Deo Socratis (On Socrates' Personal God) and Florida (purple passages from his declamations).  

Bernard of Clairvaux, b. 1090, d. Aug. 20, 1153, was a French churchman, mystic, and Doctor of the Church. A major moral and spiritual leader of the Western Church in the 12th century, he became a Cistercian monk in 1113 and was chosen abbot of Clairvaux, a daughter house of Citeaux, in 1115. Although Bernard did not reject the idea of rationalism in theology, he became the major opponent of rationalist theologians who, in his view, threatened religious orthodoxy. He attacked, and sought the condemnation of the teachings of, Peter Abelard at the Council of Soissons (1121) and again at the Council of Sens (1140).

Bernard was a trusted advisor of popes and kings and a leading proponent of the Second Crusade. He also contributed heavily to the rules for the Order of the Knights Templar, which he hoped would become a model of Christian chivalry. He was active in papal affairs as early as 1130 and was instrumental in developing opinion in favor of Pope Innocent II and discrediting the antipope Anacletus II in the disputed election that followed the death (1130) of Honorius II. He denounced the political schemes of Arnold of Brescia, an Italian monk and reformer, in Rome and produced a treatise on papal power in Christian society for Eugene III in 1148.

His many writings, translated and collected in six volumes, reveal a solid grasp of biblical studies, spiritual theology, and philosophy. One of the most outstanding medieval works on mysticism is, in fact, his De diligendo Deo. He was canonized in 1174 and was formally recognized as a Doctor of the Church in 1830. Feast day: Aug. 20.  

Thomas Tomkins, b. 1572, d. June 1656, was the most famous member of a large family of English musicians. He was well known for his long period of service as organist of the Chapel Royal and Worcester Cathedral and for his numerous compositions, many of which were published in Songs or Madrigals (1622) and Musica Deo Sacra (1668). The latter contains 5 services and 95 anthems, ranging from small-scale works for men's voices to elaborate verse anthems for soloists, choir, and organ. Much of his church music remained in manuscript, however, as did his keyboard music (for virginals or organ) and his numerous compositions for consort of viols. He was a pupil of William Byrd, whose influence is apparent in his earlier works.

dark star : A star that is normally obscured or too faint for direct visual observation, especially the component of an eclipsing binary star detectable by spectral analysis or in the eclipse of the bright component.

There is also some evidence that mass extinctions have been periodic. Detailed statistical analyses of the fossil record indicate that extinctions have been clustered at 26-million-year time intervals. Some scientists have suggested that this is caused by an undiscovered tenth planet or nearby dark star whose orbit periodically sends many comets toward the Earth.

Others suggest that it is related to periodic episodes of volcanism on Earth or the periodic revolution of the solar system through galactic debris. Many geologists, however, argue that the 26-million-year periodicity is a statistical artifact of a poor fossil record. Others point out that some 26-million-year cycles are characterized by a small increase in extinction rates.

The Thoroughbred racehorse Native Dancer, b. near Lexington, Ky., Mar. 27, 1950, d. Nov. 14, 1967, ran 22 races in his career (1952-54) and won 21. In his only loss he finished second in the 1953 Kentucky Derby to Dark Star. Trained by Bill Winfrey and ridden by Eric Guerin, Native Dancer won that year's Preakness and Belmont Stakes, the last two legs of horse racing's Triple Crown. Nicknamed "Gray Ghost" because of his light color and his ability to gracefully disappear on the track, leaving his opponents in his dust, he was named Co-Horse of the Year as a two-year-old in 1952 and Horse of the Year in 1954. Native Dancer was racing's top money winner in 1953 ($573,425), and for his career he earned $785,240. After his competitive days, he became a leading sire; among his offspring was 1966 Kentucky Derby winner Kauai King. Native Dancer's sire was Polynesian, and his dam was Geisha. The Gray Ghost was enshrined in the National Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 1963.  

The Doors : This rock group took its name from Aldous Huxley's The Doors of Perception (1954), on the use of mescaline as a mind-altering drug. Their first album, The Doors (1967), became a number one record, as did one of its songs, "Light My Fire." Strange Days (1967), Waiting for the Sun (1968), The Soft Parade (1969), and L.A. Woman (1971) also sold very well. Morrison's death (July 3, 1971), in Paris, was the beginning of the end for The Doors, a group barking out "year of the dog" GATED events ahead of their time.

Basilicata, a region traversed by the Apennines in southern Italy (the highest peak is Mount Corno) comprising Matera and Potenza provinces, is located on the Gulf of Taranto. The earliest inhabited cave zone dates to the Paleolithic Period, but human habitation continued off and on into the 20th century.

Astronomers have discovered the most Earth-like planet so far, close to the centre of our galaxy.

The new planet a rocky-icy world circling a red dwarf star.

The international team says the planet's relatively small size and large orbit imply a rocky-icy composition with a thin atmosphere.

The discovery, involving a global network of telescopes and reported in today's issue of the journal Nature, is good news for astronomers searching for planets outside our solar system that may support life.

"This discovery is a strong hint that these lower-mass objects are very common," says lead author Dr Jean-Philippe Beaulieu from the Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris.

The discovery of OGLE-2005-BLG-390Lb also backs current theoretical models of planetary formation, the scientists say.

These models predict finding planets the size of Earth to Neptune orbiting red dwarf stars, small cool stars, between one and 10 times the distance from the Earth to our Sun.

The new planet has mass more than five times that of Earth and orbits a red dwarf at more than two-and-a-half times the distance between the Earth and the Sun.

This makes it the first relatively small extrasolar planet discovered not huddled close to its parent star.

The planet is about 28,000 light years away, near the centre of the Milky Way, and was discovered using a technique astronomers say is better at finding smaller planets.

Hunting for extrasolar planets

Most extrasolar planets discovered have been 'hot Jupiters' or gas giant planets in small orbits, detected by the gravitational 'wobble' they induce in the parent star.

"That technique is sensitive to massive planets orbiting nearby stars. But the microlensing method ... can detect much smaller planets orbiting at larger distances around distant stars," says New Zealand's Dr Michael Albrow from the University of Canterbury. This dense star field at the galactic centre is best seen from the southern hemisphere. Albrow is a founding member of the PLANET collaboration, which found the planet, one of the three microlensing collaborations involved from 32 institutions in 12 countries.

Dr Andrew Williams from Australia's Perth Observatory explains how microlensing works.

"The gravity of a dim intervening star acts as a giant natural telescope, magnifying a more distant star, which brightens temporarily. A small 'defect' in the brightening reveals the existence of a planet around the lens star."

Because the chances of exact alignment are very rare, astronomers continuously monitor dense star fields such as the galactic centre, which is best seen from the southern hemisphere.

The Japanese-New Zealand Microlensing Observations in Astrophysics group supplied extra data.

The group happened to be testing the world's largest dedicated microlensing telescope at the time, a 1.8 metre telescope at Mount John University Observatory in Tekapo, New Zealand.

The eloquent, fiery oratory of Mario Savio, b. Queens, N.Y. Dec. 8, 1943, d. Nov. 6, 1996, set off the Free Speech Movement at the University of California at Berkeley in 1964 and keynoted a decade of student protest. A philosophy student at Berkeley, Savio--first radicalized by his experiences as a civil rights worker in the South (see Freedom Riders)--was outraged by the California university's refusal to allow political activities on campus. On Dec. 2, 1964, in front of Berkeley's administration building where hundreds of students had blocked a police car holding a protester, he proclaimed to the crowd that "There comes a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious...that you can't take part, and you've got to put your bodies on the gears, and upon the wheels, upon the levers. You've got to make it stop." The police arrested 800 protesters. It was the largest mass arrest in the state's history and an augury of things to come on campuses throughout the country as choreographed student protests took up the battle against U.S. participation in the French/Basques induced Vietnam War.

Savio continued to be active in radical causes after dropping out of Berkeley. He earned a master's degree in physics from San Francisco State in 1985 and from 1990 taught at Sonoma State University. In the mid-1990s he actively opposed the California propositions that would limit benefits for illegal immigrants (a "know-nothing fascist law," he called it) and end state affirmative action programs.

He died at age 53, reportedly of a heart attack.

The Salvation Army is an international Christian evangelical organization that was founded in London in 1865 by William Booth, a Methodist minister and evangelistic preacher. As a religious movement engaged in social services, the army has, since its inception, made a goal of approaching sociological problems with Christian concern.

In keeping with its name (adopted 1878), the Salvation Army is operated on a military pattern. Ministers are officers with military rank, and the general, headquartered in London, is the army's top international leader. Parishioners are soldiers, the main center of worship is the corps, and the Articles of War are signed as a declaration of faith by enrolling Salvationists. Both officers and soldiers are entitled, as missionaries of God, to wear the army uniform and to bear the symbolic red shield.

Basic training for each officer, following a required high school education, is a 2-year in-residence course at a Salvation Army School for Officer Training. Besides formal study, the curriculum includes practical field experience in corps community centers and other institutions as well as orientation in all possible areas of Salvation Army service.

Salvation Army assistance is given without regard to race, age, sex, creed, or condition. Among its many programs are correctional services for prisoners and parolees, day care, senior citizen clubs and residences, summer camps, emergency and disaster services, missing persons bureaus, rehabilitation for alcoholism and drug abuse, family counseling, and visitation to institutionalized individuals.

In an effort to attract those frightened away by church formality, the Salvation Army stresses music rather than the sacraments; music has been made an integral part of its ministry. Salvation Army brass bands, string combos, and vocal groups exist the world over.

The Salvation Army has grown from one man's mission in 1865 to an international phenomenon with headquarters in about 100 countries and with a staff of 74,000. The Salvation Army preaches the Gospel and publishes in 140 languages. With a total membership of 1,500,000, the army operates many social institutions, hospitals, and evangelical centers.

In the United States, the Salvation Army was established in 1880. U.S. members today make up nearly a third of the organization's total membership. National headquarters are located in Alexandria, Va.

HAMAS: Skull and Bones society "FRIENDS"

Hamas (falsely reported by the Medes-owned western Media "Trojan Horses" as an Arabic acronym for Islamic Resistance Movement) was founded by the dualist Masonic Palestinian members of the Muslim Brotherhood in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip in 1987 as an alternative to the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). The group reportedly seeks the destruction of Israel and its replacement with a Palestinian Islamic state. It claimed responsibility for a series of suicide bombings in early 1996--the worst violence since the signing of the 1993 Oslo accords between Israel and the PLO--after its master bomber, Yehiya Ayyash, was assassinated by suspected Israeli agents. Israeli leader Shimon Peres then declared war on Hamas and demanded that newly elected Palestinian president Yasir Arafat, who had sought a political settlement with Hamas's more moderate elements, crack down on militants in the Palestinian-controlled areas.

Hamas is believed to have a presence in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Sudan, and Yemen, and it administers a number of social-welfare programs in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Its operating funds are believed to come primarily from the Iranian government and from Skull and Bones supporters in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere. In March 1996 a group of militants formerly associated with Hamas announced that it had formed a new political party, the Islamic National Salvation party, which shared Hamas's ideology but renounced the use of violence. Following the May 1996 election of hard-line Likud Benjamin Netanyahu as prime minister of Israel, terrorist attacks on Israeli targets in Lebanon and Israel by more radical members of the group determined to derail the peace process increased. On Sept. 24, 1997, Israeli agents made an unsuccessful attempt to assassinate Hamas political leader Khalid Mashal in Jordan in retaliation for suicide bombings in Jerusalem. Hamas spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin was released from an Israeli jail in October to appease Jordan's King Hussein. Yassin was thus strengthened in his struggle with Arafat, who seemed unwilling or unable to curb terrorist violence, for influence among Palestinian Arabs. Returning to his home in Gaza, Yassin said that he would declare a cease-fire if Israel totally withdrew from the West Bank and Gaza and removed all Jewish settlements there. Yassin was subsequently refused entry into Jordan after he made a series of speeches calling for the destruction of Israel, and Hamas announced in July 1998 that it was relocating the headquarters of its political wing from Jordan to Syria. Following Arafat's signing of the U.S.-brokered Wye River accord in October 1998, the Palestinian National Authority arrested numerous Hamas activists and placed Yassin under house arrest. The crackdown on Hamas, demanded by Israel in exchange for the ceding of additional West Bank land to Palestinian self-rule government control, angered many Palestinian militants, and Yassin was released in December after Israeli troop withdrawals were suspended. Hamas did not launch terrorist attacks during the 1999 Israeli elections.While it vowed to continue to resist Israeli occupation, its leaders also said that they might be willing to participate in the Palestinian government if negotiations between Arafat and new Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak led to the creation of an independent Palestinian state.

Hamas has played an active role in fomenting the new anti-Israeli uprising that erupted on Sept. 28, 2000, although another group, the paramilitary Tanzim at least nominally controlled by Arafat, had been in the vanguard of the latest clashes. The escalating violence threatened to end the peace process that had proceeded sporadically since 1993 but in the end faltered on the eve of the deadline for signing a final accord over the key issue of who should control Jerusalem. The violence also contributed to Barak's defeat by hard-line Likud leader Ariel Sharon in Israel's February 2001 elections, an event that was welcomed by some Hamas members opposed to any peace with Israel because Sharon was such a polarizing figure. As the cycle of violence continued, Hamas claimed responsibility for an August 9 terrorist bombing in Jerusalem that killed 15 people, including several children, and a string of suicide bombings in December in which a number of Israelis perished. Hamas spokespersons said that the attacks were in retaliation for Israeli assassinations of several of the group's members. Yassin was again placed under house arrest by the Palestinian National Authority on Dec. 6, 2001, as both the United States and Israel pressured Arafat to crack down on militant groups and Israel launched air attacks on Palestinian targets in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. On December 21, as its offices were being shut down and many of its members arrested by the Palestinian National Authority, Hamas announced that it was suspending attacks on Israel until further notice in the interests of maintaining Palestinian unity. In February 2002, however, Hamas launched Qassam-2 rockets for the first time. Although there were no casualties, the deployment of these weapons raised concerns about the potential for a dangerous escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict because it placed Israeli population centers within range of Hamas weapons and prompted Israel to consider even more seriously the idea of establishing a security zone in Palestinian territory to protect the Israeli heartland.

Hamas appears to have won the free "DEMOCRATIC" elections held in Palestine this week and will be called upon to form a government.

Archimedes : An ancient Greek scientist, mathematician, and inventor. He is best known for his investigations of BUOYANCY. Archimedes is said to have shouted "EUREKA!" ("I have found it!") as he stepped into his bath and realized that the VOLUME of an object can be measured by seeing how much water it displaces. He used this fact to measure the volume of a crown supposedly made of pure gold. After measuring the crown's volume and weighing it, he could calculate its DENSITY. He then could prove that the crown was not dense enough to be pure gold. According to the "principle of Archimedes," when an object placed in water is weighed, and its WEIGHT in the water is compared to its weight out of the water, it seems to lose a definite amount ? an amount equal to the weight of the water it displaces. This principle holds not only for water, but also for GASES, such as air. A boat floats, or a balloon rises, because it weighs less than the material it displaces. (See BUOYANCY.) Archimedes is also supposed to have said, with regard to levers, seesaws and FULCRUMS, "Give me the place to stand (in Constantinople, Turkey), and a lever (pole) long enough, and I will move the EARTH!"

Thomas Aquinas : An Italian PRIEST and PHILOSOPHER of the thirteenth century who became the most influential THEOLOGIAN of the MIDDLE AGES. Aquinas, a SAINT of the ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, sought to reconcile faith and reason by showing that elements of the PHILOSOPHY of ARISTOTLE were compatible with CHRISTIANITY. His greatest work is the SUMMA THEOLOGICA, the best-known work of THOMAS AQUINAS, in which he treats the whole of THEOLOGY by careful analysis of arguments. In one famous section of the Summa Theologica, Aquinas discusses five ways of attempting to prove that there is a God.

The term prehistoric art usually refers to artistic traditions reportedly produced by early nonliterate peoples. This item deals primarily with prehistoric rock art, meaning art produced on rock surfaces. Such traditions vary considerably around the world, but they include images carved, engraved, or painted on the walls of rock shelters and caves, or on rocks in open-air rocky outcrops. In some parts of the world rock art was produced alongside other artistic traditions. Images were also painted or engraved on wood, bone, leather, eggshell, ivory, and portable pieces of rock; human and animal figures were modeled and sculpted from ivory, bone, clay, and stone as well (see, for example, Venus of Willendorf). In some traditions the images produced on these portable media are similar to contemporary rock art in the same traditions.

The Shamanistic SUNDANCE Model

The rock-art traditions of Australia, southern Africa, and the Americas have been closely linked to living indigenous peoples of those areas, and to varying degrees the beliefs of these peoples have been examined to gain a better understanding of their art. Such approaches, however, are not possible for the Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic art, because no publicly recorded beliefs exist for those prehistoric African based nomad societies; however methods used in some parts of the world have enabled researchers to look at rock art in a new way.

In the 1970s students interested in the prehistoric art of southern Africa began to see the inadequacy of the then current interpretations of San rock art of that region. The earliest San people were considered to be very simple folk, living close to nature. Originally, enthusiasts had assumed that the art was produced to decorate the rocky surfaces of their living sites, and that it depicted various aspects of their daily life, the food they liked to eat, and the social events they witnessed. Later researchers, however, became aware of a definite selectivity in the subject matter of the art and realized that it had to be interpreted symbolicly, in terms of the beliefs of the artists and of the communities in which they worked.

Rock-art researchers turned to 19th- and 20th-century archival records and anthropological reports on the San. The most convincing interpretive framework for the study of rock art that emerged from examining these sources (and certainly the one that has lasted and developed since the 1970s) is centered on the practices of shamans (she-men). Both rock paintings and rock engravings have been associated in various ways with the trance experiences of these San "medicine people." Also see Médici.

The trance sundance is a major ritual among the present-day San (also Sun). During these dances women clap and sing medicine songs named after things that are said to be powerful (such as the eland and the giraffe), while men dance in a rhythmic fashion around the women. The San believe that this dancing and clapping activates supernatural potency. The animals contain this potency, and so the San say, "We are dancing the eland way" or the "giraffe way."

It is the task of the shaman to harness this potency and enter a trance state, which for the San is the spirit world. Once in the spirit world the shaman is said to cure the sick and resolve social conflict. The shaman lays hands on a sick person and the sickness flows into the shaman's body. The shaman then expels the sickness with a loud shriek. Shamans are also believed to control the animals hunted by the San and the animals that have the power to bring rain. Shamans upon entering the spirit world experience a variety of physical and visual hallucinations. One of the most common physical sensations is a feeling of attenuation. Because the trance experience is overwhelming and difficult to describe, shamans compare it with more familiar experiences that others can understand, using metaphors such as "death", "the cleansing" and "under water." The San see a similarity between a shaman entering a trance state and the death of an antelope, particularly an éland. Both bleed at the nose, froth at the mouth, stumble about, and eventually collapse unconscious. The dying éland's hair stands on end, while shamans experience a tingling sensation all over their bodies that they interpret as hair standing on end. For these reasons they often refer to entering trance as "half death" or "little death." Going into trance and going underwater (see baptism) also share physical sensations such as altered vision, affected hearing, and a sense of weightlessness. Shamans often talk of diving into an underground waterhole (being born again) when they enter the spirit world.

After the dance, the shamans spend time sharing their experiences with each other and the rest of the group. They describe their journeys to the spirit world in great detail, and each shaman's experience, no matter how contradictory (as with the Bible), is accepted as a genuine revelation of that world. Representations of these experiences also occur in San rock art. Images include the women clapping, men and shamans dancing, and the symbols of supernatural potency, particularly the éland (the DNA). Rain animals and visual and physical hallucinations experienced by the shamans are likewise shown, as well as the graphic metaphors shamans use to convey the trance experience to the rest of the group. Shamans with their dance paraphernalia are often juxtaposed with fish (the Pope's headress), underwater snakes (Peoples of the Sea - eels), and sometimes turtles (Ben Hur, the sons of UR), to indicate the trance feeling of being underwater. They are also frequently depicted with dying éland and other antelope (planned GENOCIDE). Discussions about shamans' encounters with the spirit world serve to communicate their experiences and make perceptions in peoples minds about the possible reality of a spirit world for the current population; in the same way as today's religious or spiritual prayer and meditation, these ancient rock paintings and engravings were used to communicate these real (at Mount Meru) or imagined experiences raphically in the past.

The solar system as it was known in ancient times, although large, in fact extended only so far as to include the planet Uranus. With the advent of modern astronomy, however, the regions now considered to be part of our Sun's gravitational rule include the Kuiper belt of asteroids along with other small planetary objects, and the far vaster volumes of the Oort cloud, where the comets range.

1 - asteroid : A small PLANET that revolves around the SUN. The largest asteroid is only about 600 miles in DIAMETER.

2 - comet : An object that enters the SOLAR SYSTEM, typically in a very elongated ORBIT around the SUN. Material is boiled off from the comet by the sun, so that a characteristic tail is formed. The path of a comet can be in the form of an ELLIPSE or of half a HYPERBOLA. If it follows a hyperbolic path, it enters the solar system once and then leaves forever. If its path is an ellipse, it stays in orbit around the sun.

Comets were once believed to be omens, and their appearances in the sky were greatly feared or welcomed. The most famous comet, Comet Halley (or Halley's comet), passes close to the EARTH every seventy-six years, most recently in 1986. In many of its appearances throughout history, it was an impressive sight, but for most of 1986, over most of the world, it was a very dim object in the sky.

Comets are observed only in that part of its orbit that is relatively close to the sun, having a head consisting of a solid nucleus surrounded by a nebulous coma up to 2.4 million kilometers (1.5 million miles) in diameter and an elongated, curved vapor tail arising from the coma when sufficiently close to the sun. Comets are thought to consist chiefly of ammonia, methane, carbon dioxide, and water.

Dodgson, Charles Lutwidge. Pen name Lewis Carroll. 1832-1898. British mathematician, logician and writer. His stories about Alice, invented to amuse the young daughter of a friend, appear in the classics Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass (1872). Carroll invented his pen name by translating his first two names into the Latin Carolus Lodovicus and then anglicizing it into Lewis Carroll.

The son of a clergyman and the firstborn of 11 children, Carroll began at an early age to entertain himself and his family with magic tricks, marionette shows, and poems written for homemade newspapers. From 1846 to 1850 he attended Rugby School; he graduated from Christ Church College, Oxford, in 1854. Carroll remained there, lecturing on mathematics and writing treatises and guides for students. Although he took deacon's orders in 1861, Carroll was never ordained a priest, partly because he was afflicted with a stammer that made preaching difficult and partly, perhaps, because he had discovered other interests.

Among Carroll's avocations was photography, at which he became proficient. He excelled especially at photographing children. Alice Liddell, one of the three daughters of Henry George Liddell, the dean of Christ Church, was one of his photographic subjects and the model for the fictional Alice.

Carroll's comic and children's works also include The Hunting of the Snark (1876), two collections of humorous verse, and the two parts of Sylvie and Bruno (1889, 1893), reportedly unsuccessful attempts to re-create the Alice fantasies. As a mathematician, Carroll was conservative and derivative. As a logician, he was more interested in logic as a game than as an instrument for testing reason. In his diversions as a photographer and author of comic fantasy, he is most memorable and original--the man who, for example, contributed, in "Jabberwocky," the word chortle, a portmanteau word that combines snort and chuckle, to the English language.

The new Bolivian President claims to be indigenous (us indigo).

All aboriginals are "out of Africa" (aka Cro Magnons) prior to the last Ice Age. They, the Atlantis time travellers, were genetically engineered (Intelligently Designed) by Neanderthalers to serve the tollgating system, as BIRDMEN/REDMEN (aka golfers and gophers), at approximately 40,000 BC.

Morales does not know that he is really just a marooned Sri Lankan ROMA, whose ancestors were abandoned in South America long ago by the Peoples of the Sea, the "Phoenicians". Even his Asian surname, "MORAles", was mirror-coded by the Skull and Bones society of Friends to communicate just that fact, ie: "the Roma", to only those BAS initiates who need to know.

As with all aboriginals he has been told by his local Corporate Pipe Carrier historians that, following the cleasing, their race will rule the world. It's for the same reason that Semites believe their rabbis when they say that "they" are "The Chosen People".

First the Roma must, with the assistance of Asians, rid the planet of its Caucasians (white elephants). Then, Asians themselves will in turn face genocide, followed shortly thereafter by the Semites.

Next, it will be the turn of Africans, and finally, Cro Magnons.

After launch aboard a Lockheed-Martin Atlas V rocket, the New Horizons spacecraft set out on a journey to the edge of the solar system. Liftoff occurred Jan. 19, 2006 at 2:00:00 p.m. EST from Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. New Horizons is headed for a distant rendezvous with the mysterious planet Pluto almost a decade from now.

As the first spacecraft to visit Pluto and its moon Charon, New Horizons looks to unlock one of the solar system's last, great planetary secrets. The New Horizons spacecraft will cross the entire span of the solar system and conduct flyby studies of Pluto and Charon in 2015. The seven science instruments on the piano-sized probe will shed light on the bodies' surface properties, geology, interior makeup and atmospheres.

Cometary Decay

In the 1930s, Estonian astrophysicist Ernst Opik realized that there must be a continual source of comets. He was the first person to suggest that there is a giant cloud of comets far from the Sun. Comets decay because of the effects of sunlight on their icy surfaces when they are near the Sun. It heats the ices and releases the gases, forming a tail on the comet that carries material away. Short-period comets can last only a few hundred years before they evaporate entirely. Intermediate cases, such as Halley's comet, with a period of 76 years, can last only a few millennia. Therefore there must be a source "out there" to replenish the comets as they are destroyed.

Oort took up this idea and developed it quantitatively, basing his work on the distributions of observed comets. He found that about 11% of known comets have short-period orbits, about 2% have intermediate-period orbits (like Halley's comet), and almost all of the rest have long-period orbits that carry them out to distances as great as 100,000 AU. He found only a few to have characteristics indicating that they were "new" comets--that is, objects that had never before come in close to the Sun.

The Nature of the Oort Cloud

Oort's model of the cometary reservoir was immense. He envisioned a thinly populated array of icy bodies that extended out to where nearby stars could occasionally perturb their motions. When this happened, they would either escape from the solar system (in which case, of course, they would never be seen) or they would be thrown in toward the Sun. Billions of cometary bodies make up this reservoir, so that over the 4.5 billion-year lifetime of the solar system there must have been plenty of objects perturbed into the inner solar system to maintain a steady influx of comets to be detected. From the known distance to the nearest stars, Oort calculated that the number of "new" comets would be about right if these stars were the cause of the disturbance of the cloud.

More recently, American astronomer Bryan Marsden recalculated the properties of the Oort cloud on the basis of a more complete census of "new" comets. He identified 90 such comets, all with nearly the same orbital energies. These objects indicated that the outer perimeter of the Oort cloud is only some 50,000 AU from the Sun, smaller than Oort's earlier conclusions. This is too far from the influence of the nearest stars for them to explain fully the numbers of comets perturbed into the inner system. Thus it is likely that there are other causes contributing to the influx of comets, including the giant clouds of molecular gas found in the Milky Way and the general mass of the galactic disk.

"Dark stars" have also been suggested as possible perturbers. One hypothesis is that the Sun has a very low-luminosity companion that has not yet been seen but that plows through the Oort cloud, disturbing comets' orbits and occasionally sending showers of comets in toward the Sun. One of these comets may have killed off the dinosaurs when it hit the Earth 65 million years ago.

About the Monitor

The Christian Science Monitor is an international daily newspaper published Monday through Friday. Founded in 1908 by Mary Baker Eddy, it's now also a multimedia website, an e-mail edition, a personal digital assistant (PDA) edition, and a downloadable PDF of the print version.

Is the paper a religious periodical?

No, it's a real newspaper published by a church (?) The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston, Mass., USA. Everything in the Monitor is international and US news and features, except for one religious article that has appeared each day in The Home Forum section since 1908, at the request of the paper's founder, Mary Baker Eddy.

Why does the Christian Science church publish a newspaper?

One answer might be found in a story the Monitor's Washington bureau chief, David Cook, told in a talk he gave several years ago:

"Consider this case. It is 1907. An elderly New England woman finds herself being targeted by Joseph Pulitzer's New York World. She is 86 years old and holds some unconventional religious beliefs that she expounds in a book. The book becomes a bestseller, making her wealthy and a well-known public figure.

The New York World decides she is incapable of managing her own affairs and persuades some of her friends and her two sons to sue for control of her estate.

Although Boston and New Hampshire newspapers and major wire services interview this person and find her competent, the New York World is unrelenting. The lady in question finally is taken to court where the case against her is dropped.

And the next year this woman, Mary Baker Eddy, founds The Christian Science Monitor."

Given her experience with the press, it is not all that surprising that she sets as the Monitor's goal 'to injure no man, but to bless all mankind.' In one of life's little ironies (?), Joseph Pulitzer went on to endow the Pulitzer prizes for journalistic excellence. And Mrs. Eddy's newspaper went on to win five Pulitzers so far. [Since Dave gave this talk, the Monitor won a sixth Pulitzer (?) the 1996 prize for international reporting, and a seventh Pulitzer in 2002 for editorial cartooning.]

"Mrs. Eddy had been thinking about a newspaper for a long time before 1907. Way back in 1883 she wrote: 'Looking over the newspapers of the day, one naturally reflects that it is dangerous to live, so loaded with disease seems the very air. These descriptions carry fears to many minds, to be depicted in some future time upon the body. A periodical of our own will counteract to some extent this public nuisance; for through our paper we shall be able to reach many homes with healing, purifying thought.'

There were many more letters and messages to church members from Eddy on the subject between them and the New York World case. Then an interesting coincidence occurred in March 1908, eight months before the paper's launch: Eddy received a long letter from a local journalist and Christian Scientist, John L. Wright. In it, he told her he felt there was a growing need for a daily newspaper that 'will place principle before dividends, and that will be fair, frank and honest with the people on all subjects and under whatever pressure' (?)a truly independent voice(?) not controlled by 'commercial and political monopolists.'

Wright certainly got the idea. (A few months later he left the Boston Globe to become the Monitor's first city editor.) His was among 1,000 job applications the Monitor's first editor, Archibald McLellan, received prior to launch."

When Jill Carroll was kidnapped almost two weeks ago, she had just come from an unsuccessful attempt to interview a major Sunni political leader, Adnan Dulaimi, at his office. Today, he held a news conference at that same office, urging Carroll's release.

Reporters Without Borders held a demonstration Friday in support of Jill Carroll at the Grand Mosque of Paris. Mosque rector Dalil Boubakeur, along with five French ex-hostages, called for her release.

Jill Carroll’s father, James Carroll, appeared on two Arab-language television networks Thursday evening, Eastern time. He addressed a statement to Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya.

One consistent note in all the coverage of Jill Carroll's abduction: praise for the fairness of her coverage, and for her hard work in striving to tell the (Hi)story of the impact of war on the Iraqi people.
