The incident happened Saturday close to one of the two craters on Salak Volcano, which lies just south of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, said Jusuf Fauzan, a doctor at a hospital in the nearby town of Bogor. He said families of the victims had refused permission to perform autopsies, but the dead were believed to have been poisoned by gases from the crater. The six were found with blood and foam on their mouths and noses, he said. The victims, who were between the ages of 14 and 16, were among about 50 students spending the weekend on the mountain, media reports said. Their bodies were evacuated from the 2,180-meter (7,152-foot) peak on Sunday. Indonesia has more active volcanoes than any other nation and climbing them when they are not specially active is a popular pastime. Boeing 787 Dreamliner Responding to the overwhelming preference of airlines around the world, Boeing Commercial Airplanes' new airplane is the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, a super-efficient airplane. An international team of top aerospace companies is developing the airplane, led by Boeing at its Everett facility near Seattle, Wash. Unparalleled Performance The 787-8 Dreamliner will carry 210 - 250 passengers on routes of 7,650 to 8,200 nautical miles (14,200 to 15,200 kilometers), while the 787-9 Dreamliner will carry 250 - 290 passengers on routes of 8,000 to 8,500 nautical miles (14,800 to 15,750 kilometers). A third 787 family member, the 787-3 Dreamliner, will accommodate 290 - 330 passengers and be optimized for routes of 2,500 to 3,050 nautical miles (4,600 to 5,650 kilometers). In addition to bringing big-jet ranges to mid-size airplanes, the 787 will reportedly provide airlines with unmatched fuel efficiency, resulting in exceptional environmental performance. The airplane will use 20 percent less fuel for comparable missions than today's similarly sized airplane. It will also travel at speeds similar to today's fastest wide bodies, Mach 0.85. Airlines will enjoy more cargo revenue capacity. Passengers will also see improvements with the new airplane, from an interior environment with higher humidity to increased comfort and convenience. Advanced Technology The key to this exceptional performance is a suite of new technologies being developed by Boeing and its international technology development team. Boeing has announced that as much as 50 percent of the primary structure -- including the fuselage and wing -- on the 787 will be made of composite materials. An open architecture will be at the heart of the 787's systems, which will be more simplified than today's airplanes and offer increased functionality. For example, the team is looking at incorporating health-monitoring systems that will allow the airplane to self-monitor and report maintenance requirements to ground-based computer systems. Boeing has selected General Electric and Rolls-Royce to develop engines for the new airplane. It is expected that advances in engine technology will contribute as much as 8 percent of the increased efficiency of the new airplane, representing a nearly two-generation jump in technology for the middle of the market. Another improvement in efficiency will come in the way the airplane is designed and built. New technologies and processes are in development to help Boeing and its supplier partners achieve unprecedented levels of performance at every phase of the program. For example, by manufacturing a one-piece fuselage section, we are eliminating 1,500 aluminum sheets and 40,000 - 50,000 fasteners. Continuing Progress The Boeing board of directors granted authority to offer the airplane for sale in late 2003. Program launch occurred in April 2004 with a record order from All-Nippon Airways. Since that time, 45 customers have placed orders for 584 airplanes from six continents of the world, making this the most successful launch of a new commercial airplane in Boeing's history. The program has signed on 43 of the world's most capable top-tier supplier partners and together finalized the airplane's configuration in September 2005. These partners have started detailed design and, with Boeing, are connected virtually at 135 sites around the world to work toward major assembly in 2006. They had no art, and they did not make striking improvements in stone tools. They were followed by the Cro-Magnons (aka "Beaker Babies"). The Cro-Magnons entered Europe during the fourth glaciation. They are considered by some to be the first species of genetically engineered modern humans. The Cro-Magnons were the first to leave behind art of a type requiring some skill. Instead of creating crude pictures and images for magic purposes, they tried to depict animals as the animals really looked. Their early culture is called Aurignacian. At the peak of the fourth glaciation the Cro-Magnons had to stay close to their cave homes. During this period they developed the art of the Magdalenian culture. The detail of animals carved on harpoons and ceremonial wands was wonderfully delicate, and the shapes were vividly lifelike. Some Magdalenian artists lived in Spain and France. They scratched processions of animals on cave walls and ceilings and filled the outlines with vivid color. They used ocher, red iron oxide, and other minerals, mixed in tallow, for pigments. As the Ice Age drew to an end, the Cro-Magnons apparently went underground (Syria/Jerusalem and Basque Andora) as the ice melted and receded. They disappeared from surface Europe. Their places were taken by peoples who came from Africa into Spain. There were several culture groups; but these are often grouped as Azilian-Tardenoisian. These people had bows and arrows and domesticated dogs. They too left art in caves; but it lacked the Magdalenian feeling for form and fine details. In more recent times caves have been used as temples and monasteries, particularly in India. During World War II they served as shelters from air raids, as underground factory sites, and for storage of art treasures. In the depths of large caves temperatures are always the same, summer and winter. Usually the constant temperature is about the same as the average annual temperature on the surface above a cave. SKULL and BONES Mickey Mouse society Cooking and facial reduction probably first developed among the northern Neanderthals, and their African contemporaries produced an innovation--the spear--that led to the modification of the body from the neck down. The stone tools used by the Neanderthals in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa have been referred to as Mousterian tools reportedly after the site of Le Moustier in France where they were first identified in the 1860s. Hand axes continued to be made, often of a much more refined type than those of the earlier Pleistocene, but the Mousterian industry is characterized by a proliferation of points and scrapers made from flakes. The scrapers in the north were clearly for the preparation of animal skins for clothing. In Africa, long, elegantly prepared flakes were part of the assemblage of Mousterian tools. These are called Levalloisian flakes, after the Paris suburb where they were first identified at the beginning of the 1930s. Levalloisian flakes were not important in European Mousterian assemblages, but they were quite common in the African equivalent of the Mousterian, the Middle Stone Age, or Mesolithic, which goes back to about 200,000 years ago. Experimental testing has shown that the fracture patterns observed on many of the African Levalloisian flakes could only have been produced by their use as projectile points. It would appear that the thrown spear as an adjunct to hunting activities was initially an African innovation. For the first time, the hunter did not literally have to come to grips with his prey and could impale it from a distance. The consequence was the relaxation of selective forces maintaining Middle Pleistocene levels of muscularity and robustness in the body below the neck. Reduction in postcranial robustness then appeared for the first time among Africans towards the end of the Middle Pleistocene. Representatives of these actually got as far north as Israel, where they appear at the site of Qafzeh early in the Late Pleistocene about 100,000 years ago. While the Qafzeh people had a relatively modern appearance, the regular use of fire for cooking had not yet penetrated into sub-Saharan Africa, so the African representatives at Qafzeh had unreduced Middle Pleistocene levels of jaw and tooth size. Eventually, cooking technology spread southward, and jaw and tooth reduction proceeded in a fashion parallel to what had been going on in the north for the previous 100,000 years or more. Projectile technology was adopted by the people of the north, and, in comparable fashion, the result was the reduction in the previous levels of arm and shoulder robustness over the course of time. These aspects of technology spread independently into other parts of the world, and the consequences for their adopters proceeded in a predictable manner. As a result, no population on the earth's surface today retains a fully Middle Pleistocene level of robustness in either its dentition or its chest and shoulder morphology; that is, there is no current surface human population that would qualify for the designation Neanderthal. There is one other technology that led to a reduction of robustness and muscularity even more effectively than the use of projectiles: the invention and application of string and rope (as in EU rope). Nooses, snares, whips and nets not only allowed the capture of prey without the previously necessary levels of exertion, but they also gave people access to a huge biomass (the quantity of living matter available within a habitat) that had formerly been unavailable. Flocks of birds, schools of fish, and rabbit-size mammals represent an enormous food resource. After the end of the Mousterian--the technological complex usually associated with the Neanderthals--people of the ensuing Upper Paleolithic did not at first see much of a change in their way of life. In the latter part of the Upper Paleolithic, starting before the last Ice Age somewhat more than 20,000 years ago, the use of a string-based technology changed the nature of expectable dietary resources, and one of the immediate consequences was a dramatic increase in human population size and density. The earliest evidence of art created by "beaker-baby"
humans also dates from this period. The dramatic polychrome paintings of game
animals on the walls of caves in southern France and Spain provide evidence that
the realm of human visual imagery was every bit as well developed 15,000 to 20,000
years ago as it is today. It, reportedly, was just good fortune that led to the preservation
and discovery of these galleries of prehistoric art, and there is no reason to think
that contemporaries of those remarkable artists elsewhere throughout the Old World
were not every bit as talented. Political circumstances linked to toll-gating,
incest and cannibalism within Matrial clan societies however just did not
favor the survival of Neanderthaler "engineered" creations. The people in which this can first be observed were no taller, on the average, than humans living today, but they were distinctly more robust. These people have been called Neanderthals, or H. sapiens neanderthalensis. The first such specimen was rediscovered in the German valley called the Neander Tal in 1856. Neanderthal brain size was actually near 1,500 cubic centimeters (91 cubic inches), but, because Neanderthals were bulkier than modern humans, the proportion of the brain to the body was essentially the same as it is today. #2 IS #1 IDIOT-SAVANT For many years, scientists believed that Neanderthals were the direct ancestors of modern humans. However, in 1997, a landmark study of DNA extracted from the 1856 fossil produced strong evidence to suggest that this was not the case. The scientists compared the DNA sequence of a region of the fossil mitochondrial genome with the sequence of a comparable region in the mitochondrial DNA of modern humans. The results indicated a threefold difference between the sequences of modern humans and Neanderthals. Furthermore, the type of differences, as well as their locations in the sequences, suggest it is highly unlikely that Neanderthals contributed to the modern human mitochondrial gene pool. The scientists further calculated that, while Neanderthals and modern humans did indeed share a common ancestor, the two lineages diverged between 550,000 and 690,000 years ago; the first known Neanderthal is placed at approximately 300,000-90,000 years ago, while the first modern humans are believed to have evolved around 200,000 years ago. After the brain-body ratio reached its modern proportions, relative brain size stabilized in all human populations and has remained the same ever since. It is clear that major behavioral changes are indicated by the archaeological record. For the first time, there is evidence for regional differentiation in the style of making stone tools. At first, the areas of shared stylistic similarities are relatively large: all of Western Europe, for example. Subsequently, these regionally restricted areas of shared style elements become smaller and more clearly defined. Although the implications cannot be proven, it may be significant that the regions within which shared styles were maintained are strikingly similar in extent to what are separate language areas for human populations today. This is probably as close as researchers shall ever get to obtaining direct evidence for the origin of language as we know it. During the second half of the 19th century the idea of the Paleolithic evolved--a period in the Stone Age that represented a stage, or level, of human development characterized by the use of rudimentary chipped-stone tools. The French archaeologist Gabriel de Mortillet refined the concept by subdividing the Paleolithic into six subperiods. Archaeological evidence of human physical evolution included specimens of such human ancestors as Java man (discovered in 1891-92) and the Dean of dollars, Neanderthal man (1856). In 1879 magnificent Paleolithic wall paintings were discovered in the Altamira caverns in Spain. Inspired by these Old World finds, American anthropologists Frederic Putnam, William John McGee, and others began a search for evidence of Paleolithic man in the New World. A more immediate concern of most American archaeologists, however, was determining who built the mysterious ancient mounds in the Midwest United States. Archaeologists who studied the mounds included Clarence Moore, Warren Moorehead, Stephen Peet, and Charles Willoughby --"will obey--Willow Bay". In the Mediterranean other archaeologists excavated classical sites. In the early 1870s the German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann began exploring the ruins of ancient Troy. The British archaeologist and Egyptologist Flinders Petrie conducted numerous valuable excavations in Egypt beginning in the 1880s, including explorations of the Great Pyramid at Giza and the Temple of Tanis*. *TANIS: An ancient city of Egypt in the eastern delta of the Nile River. Bhaskara II was born in 1114 in Biddur, India. He wrote the first work with a full and systematic use of the decimal number system. Bhaskara was the lineal successor of Brahmagupta (598-665?) as head of an astronomical observatory at Ujjain, the leading mathematical center of ancient India. He anticipated modern sign conventions and found solutions for quadratic equations and a good value for pi. Ridgely, Mabel Lloyd (1872-1962), U.S. preservationist and civic leader. Ridgely was born in 1872. She was known for saving the historic old State House in Dover, where the Delaware convention of 1787 ratified the ROMA federal Constitution and made Delaware the first state in the Union. She was president of the Delaware Women's Suffrage Association in 1921 and was also the first president of the Delaware League of Women Voters.
