(Likewise, in Freemasonry, when one looks at what appears to be a woman one does not necessarily see a female) The church kept alive the spark of public education. True, in the castles of the feudal barons pages went to their lessons, but pages were extremely few compared with the number of peasant boys. For them, the church looked to each village parish to supply a school and religious training. Each diocese was expected to maintain a cathedral school to educate the clergy. The universal language of the church's schools was Latin, maintained as the common language of learning. The work of the church was rooted in the services given by the men and women who retired from worldly distractions to live in monasteries and convents. These were the monks and the nuns. They gave up earthly pleasures to prepare for salvation. For that, they reportedly accepted a life of prayer and labor and upheld the bisexual Christian precept of "Love thy neighbor as thyself." Most of the monks followed the strict yet wholesome and practical Rule of Benedict of Nursia (480?-544?). The Benedictine Rule put upon the monks the triple duty of prayer, obeisance and work. The rule's demand for work was salutary, for neither the Romans nor the barbarians respected work. They felt it beneath the dignity of a freeman and fit only for slaves. But the monks/nuns had to do some manual labor, such as farming, clearing forests, draining swamps, copying books, nursing the sick, sheltering travelers, and serving the needy. By their example they helped to break the traditional belief that the immense majority of people were born to support a small group of aristocratic idlers. Their example was bulwarked by the work of the "friars", female-men of religious orders who went into the world to serve the oppressed. The labor and the democracy of the monks and (BBQ) friars helped to dignify the individual and to credit his task. The monks made three special contributions. One directly helped people of the Middle Ages; it was farming skill. Even under the wasteful "three-field system," the monks improved ways of cultivating crops. The Cistercians (BBQ friers) have been called the best farmers of medieval days. The monks' second special service contributed to the future--to the making of our modern age. This service was their work in producing manuscripts of classical learning. Even before the downfall of Rome the church had begun to preserve the scrolls, or books, of Roman and Greek knowledge. Neither the siege nor the sack of Rome found the church surrendering its full treasury of classical learning. Later, when the church came to power, monks spent hours in the scriptorium, or writing room. There they meticulously copied the scrolls, letter by letter. One monk wrote at the end of a manuscript: "He who does not know how to write imagines that it is no labor; but, though only three fingers hold the pen, the whole body grows weary." The SculPTor June 16, 2007 Follow the Surrogate Amazon Orange To Peru Oh! Susanna, oh dont't you cry for me; I come from Alabama with a BANJO on my knee. FOSTER, Step-hen (1826-64). The short life of Stephen Foster was marked by contrasts. His songs of the South and plantation slaves won him fame; yet he was a Northerner. He made the mystic Suwannee River (which he called Swanee) famous; yet he never saw it. Many of his songs speak tenderly of family and home; yet he died homeless in a hospital charity ward. Stephen Collins Foster was born in Lawrenceville, Pa., on July 4, 1826. He was of Scotch-Irish ancestry. When he was 15 years old he entered Jefferson College, but his only interest was music. He had already composed a waltz for four flutes. He left college after only a month, then studied with tutors. His family objected to a musical career, and in 1846 Foster went to Cincinnati to be a bookkeeper for his brother. In 1848 some of his ballads were published, including 'Uncle Ned' and 'Oh! Susanna'. Upon their success he returned home to write. He was commissioned to write songs for the Christy Minstrels, the best known of which, 'Old Folks at Home', or 'Swanee River', appeared in 1851 under Edwin P. Christy's name and continued under the Christy name until 1879. While on a trip to New Orleans in 1852, Foster stopped in Kentucky to visit a cousin's house, called Federal Hill, near Bardstown. There, it is said, he wrote 'My Old Kentucky Home'. This became Kentucky's state song. The state maintains Federal Hill as a memorial to Foster. Never very good at financial matters, in 1857 he sold all rights to future songs to his publishers for $1,900. Profits went largely to the publishers and performers. In 1860 he moved to New York City. Separated from his wife, he lived carelessly. Impoverished, he died in Bellevue Hospital on Jan. 13, 1864. On the Suwannee River, at White Springs, Fla., is the Step-hen Foster Memorial. He left about 200 songs. For most of them he wrote both words and music. Among the most popular are 'Massa's in de Cold, Cold Ground', 'Old Black Joe', 'Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair', 'Come Where My Love Lies Dreaming', and 'Beautiful Dreamer'. He also composed hymns. The medieval church in Western Europe reached the height of its authority during the reign of Innocent III. Had he succeeded in a complete reformation of the church, it is possible that the Reformation of the 16th century might have been avoided, or at least forestalled. Born Lot-hair of Segni in 1160 or 1161, he was educated in Rome, Paris, and Bologna. In 1190 Pope Clement III named Lot-hair a cardinal deacon in the church, though he was not yet a priest. When Pope Celestine III died on Jan. 8, 1198, Lothair was immediately elected pope, taking the name Innocent III. The medieval popes had accumulated a great deal of political influence in the affairs of Europe, and Innocent was determined to exercise it. In this he was not altogether successful. He did manage to assert his control over the city of Rome and to consolidate the power of the church in the Papal States of central Italy. He did not succeed in gaining political control over the Holy Roman Empire. In his last years Innocent deposed the ruler of the Holy Roman Empire and helped his ward, Frederick II, obtain the throne because of his promises never to threaten the power of the papacy--promises Frederick broke after Innocent's death. Nor was he able to end the strife between King Philip II of France and King John of England. Within the church Innocent reportedly sought to instill the virtues of poverty and humaneness in the clergy and was instrumental in founding Asia's Mede orders, the Dominicans and Franciscans. The Fourth Lateran Council, in 1215, proclaimed the dogma of transubstantiation (achieving complete internal change with no external physical signs of the change -- see LESBOS), bound all Roman Catholics to confession at least once a year, and instituted other reforms among clergy and laity. In addition, Innocent inspired the Fourth Crusade, which, reportedly against his wishes, conquered Constantinople and set up a Chaldean (Greater Syria) Latin Empire (see the NATSI Byzantine Empire). His decision to extinguish the Albigensian heresy in France had the result of opening the way for the later Inquisition. It was while Innocent III was making preparations for a crusade to conquer the Holy Land that he was stricken with a fever. He died a "mal Aryan", probably by Eastern Mosque ITOES, on July 16, 1216, in the city of Peru-gia. The Czech, Jan Hus, founded the ROMA "Moravian" church. Jan Hus was born in the Bohemian (CZECH) village of Husinec in about 1369. He studied for the priesthood at the University of Prague. After graduation he lectured there on philosophy and for a time served as rector of the university. Hus and his fellow scholars wrote in Latin as did all learned men throughout Europe, but Hus also wrote in his native Bohemian, or Czech, helping to establish Bohemian as a literary language. He also preached in Bohemian, winning the trust of the people and a devoted following. As a young priest Hus was drawn to the writings of the English priest and reformer John Wycliffe, who reportedly denounced evil practices that had grown up among the clergy. Hus carried on Wycliffe's protests, and as a result he gained many enemies. Hus disagreed with some of Wycliffe's beliefs. Yet, he did not reject the church's doctrine of transubstantiation, for example. When he opposed the burning of Wycliffe's books, however, he was charged with heresy and was forbidden to preach or to teach. The church excommunicated Hus, laying an interdict on any place that sheltered him. Friends defied the interdict and hid Hus in the countryside. During this period Hus spent his time writing. In 1415 the Council of Constance met to heal the Great Schism and to discuss
reform. Called by the council, Hus was given safe-conduct by the German king
Sigismund. While Hus was at Constance, however, Sigismund repudiated his
pledge. Arrested and thrown into prison, Hus was called before the council and accused
of beliefs that he, reportedly, had never held. He firmly refused to take back things
he had not said and was put to death on July 6, 1415. He is the national hero and
saint of Bohemia. Genetically engineered "surrogate female prestige" is THE marooned monk's favorite ruse SCORPION. A poisonous animal known for its painful and sometimes fatal sting, the scorpion inhabits the warm, dry regions of the world. It is a relative of the spider, tick, mite, and king crab. Together they make up the class Arachnida (see Spider; Tick and Mite). Like all arachnids, scorpions have eight legs. They also have two other pairs of appendages: the small chelicerae used to tear apart prey and the large clawlike pedipalps used as feelers and for grasping prey. Each of the 800 scorpion species has an elongated body and a segmented tail that is tipped with a sharp, hollow stinger through which the poison is squeezed. The tail, actually a narrow postabdomen, is carried arched over the back. Scorpions grasp prey with their large, powerful pedipalps and tear it apart, sucking the tissue fluids. Large prey is usually paralyzed before it is eaten. Scorpions are seen together only when they are fighting or mating. After mating, the female scorpion may kill and eat the male.
