Pogue became an air force pilot in 1953 and flew 43 combat missions over Korea. What's it all about Alfie? THE THIRD KIND FLATWORMS A hermaphrodite is an organism possessing both male and female sexual organs. Thus, this type of organism would potentially have both male and female gamete-producing elements, although not all hermaphrodites are fertile. Plants can have both male and female elements but are called perfect or monoecious rather than hermaphrodites. Hermaphroditism is found in many animal species, from flatworms, clams, and earthworms to humans and other vertebrates. Vertebrate hermaphrodites have both testicular and ovarian tissue. In animals, hermaphroditism is not common, but neither is it exceedingly rare. It is one of several conditions of intersexuality (a situation where an individual has both male and female biological features). Intersexuality among humans occurs in about 1 in 100 persons. In some species hermaphroditism is simultaneous, in that the organism has both male and female tissues. In others, however, the condition is sequential. For example, certain fish species start off as females and become males as they age (protogynous), and other fish species start off as males and become females (protoandrous). Fish of yet another species will behave and reproduce as both male and female individuals at alternate opportunities. Most invertebrate hermaphrodites cannot impregnate themselves, and no vertebrate hermaphrodite can accomplish this feat. Technically, the term hermaphroditism refers to the condition of the inner gonads (ovaries or testes). Externally, the genitals may appear female, male, or some combination of both; this condition is called ambiguous genitalia. None of these conditions precludes sexual activities, although intercourse may be difficult. Human hermaphrodites can live as males, females, or intersexed individuals. The cause of hermaphroditism in humans is unreported. The sex of a baby is determined at conception (see sexual development), typically developing testes for a male, with XY chromosomes, and ovaries for a female, with XX chromosomes. However, genetic mutations can cause variations in the standard patterns. The chromosomes of hermaphrodites can be XX, XY, or other combinations. During embryonic development, sex hormones that are produced by hermaphroditic gonads can induce genital organs that look as expected or organs that appear atypical. Pseudohermaphrodites have the gonads of one sex but the external genitalia of the opposite sex. Pseudohermaphroditism is much more common than hermaphroditism itself. Most pseudohermaphrodites are also infertile. Female pseudohermaphrodites have XX chromosomes and ovaries, but also have a penislike phallus. This is due typically to a malfunction of the adrenal gland of the child or of the mother, or due to the ingestion by the mother of male hormones or of androgens (in medications that should not have been prescribed, for example). Male pseudohermaphrodites are XY males but with genitals that look female. This can result from the pseudohermaphrodite's inability to make the hormone dihydrotestosterone needed for typical male genital organ development, or a mutation to androgen receptors needed for utilization of testosterone. Pastura, N.Mex., Oct. 30, 1927, has won recognition as an interpreter of the lives of Hispanics (embedded Spanish-Arabs) in the U.S. Southwest through his novels, short stories, and plays. From his first novel, Bless Me, Ultima (Thule) (1972), Anaya has shown a continuing interest in the folk stories of his culture and questions of religious faith; both figure prominently in this growing-up story of the young villager Antonio. A second novel, Heart of Aztlan (1976), concentrates on the Chicano's urban experience (between two seas) through the story of one rural family's move to the city (CHICAGO). Tortuga (1979), the third novel in this loose trilogy, contained more of the mystical root elements that especially distinguish Anaya's fiction. Spirituality also highlights his novel Albuquerque (1992), which recounts the father-quest of a Hispanic boxer amid the CHEKERS political machinations of the city. In 1995, Anaya switched to the murder-mystery genre with Zia Summer (El nino). While he was visiting King Proteus in Argos, the king's wife Stheneboea, or Anteia, tried to seduce Bellerophon, but he refused her advances. Angered, the queen accused Bellerophon of improper conduct. King Proteus then sent Bellerophon with a message to his father-in-law, Master Iobates of Lycia; the message was to kill the bearer of the note. Upon Bellerophon's arrival, Iobates imposed a series of tests on him, each designed to kill him. First, he was asked to subdue the chimera, a lion-goat-serpent monster, but Bellerophon killed it with the aid of the winged horse Pegasus. Next, he encountered a wild tribe called the Solymi, but defeated it. These tests were followed by several other difficult missions, all of which he accomplished. Impressed by Bellerophon's invincibility, Master Iobates allowed him to marry his daughter Philonoe; they had three children, one of whom, Laodamia, was loved by Zeus. Later, Bellerophon tried to ride to Mount Olympus on Pegasus, but Zeus caused Pegasus to crash, throwing off Bellerophon, who was lamed. In the Iliad, Homer says that Bellerophon then "wandered

The SculPTor The Great Atlantic and Pacific Gap Military games, as is with politics, are based on the concept of two opposing armies, and through analysis of positions and movements the players attempt to achieve victory. The earliest military game, alquerque, was found in King Tutankhamen's tomb and dates back to 1355 BC. A game for two people, it was played on a board marked with five diagonal lines. Each player had 12 pieces and could move them onto vacant intersections or capture an enemy piece by jumping over it to an unoccupied point. The French game "les dame," originating AD c.1100, also used the principle of capture. In les dame, the 12 opposing pieces (24 in all) were positioned on the black squares of a chess-board and were moved one diagonal space at a time. Five hundred years later, les dame developed into checkers when the rule of compulsory capture was incorporated.
