BUDDHISM'S HINDU-PERSIAN "CAPISTRANO SWALLOWS" John-Paul Getti's SirWren--Siren (Sir Christopher Wren's Anglican muse ruse) In Tibetan Buddhism, Palden (Pelden) Lhamo, is the only female among the eight dharmapalas (in Tibetan, drakshe gye), or protective deities. She is the special protector of the Dalai Lama and of the city of Lhasa. Like the other dharmapalas, Palden Lhamo was originally a demon who was subdued by the guru Padmasambhava and made a defender of Buddhism. Like her cohorts, she has a ferocious appearance, and she is portrayed in art as dark blue, with a club in one hand and a skull in the other. Her hair stands on end, her face is contorted in anger, and she wears a garland of severed human heads. She is mounted on a wild ass with reins consisting of poisonous snakes. Palden Lhamo's destructive force is directed against the human passions (sex between persons of opposite genders), which are considered harmful in Buddhist teaching. ASSYRIA (Ashur) aka Iraq Sennacherib's son Esarhaddon (r. 680-669 BC) rebuilt Babylon and tried to appease the Babylonians. During his reign, incursions by the Cimmerians and Scythians posed serious threats to Assyrian possessions in Anatolia and Media (northwestern Iran), the latter of which was a major source of horses (also see cars and charriots used as VEHICLES that move the plan ahead) for the Assyrian army. Esarhaddon's principal accomplishment was the conquest of Egypt, begun by him in 675 BC but completed by his son Ashurbanipal (r. 668-627 BC). Ashurbanipal, the last great king of Assyria, had to deal with numerous revolts. One of them, in which he was threatened by his brother, Shumash-shum-ukin, supported by the Elamites (the first Wales), involved him in a civil war from 652 to 648 BC. Ashurbanipal led an expedition against Elam (Prince Harry is Wales) and captured Susa, its capital city. After his death, however, the empire gradually disintegrated. In 626 BC, Nabopalassar, a Chaldean (Judean) nobleman, proclaimed Babylonian independence and, allied with the Medes (Roma from MEDIA), set out to challenge Assyria (Iraq). In the years 614-609, Ashur and Nineveh were captured by the Medes, and the Assyrian king fled to Harran (Hurri-Harry) on the northwest frontier. ASIAN BEHEADERS In Tibetan Buddhism, Mahakala (Mgon-po) is one of the dharmapalas ("guardians of the law"), fierce pre-Buddhist Tibetan demons believed to have been subdued and made defenders of the Buddhist law, either by the guru Padmasambhava or the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara. Mahakala, whose name means "the great black one" is usually depicted as a terrifying monster with bared fangs. He has six arms and a huge belly and wears an elephant skin and a tiger skin; on his head is a crown of skulls, and he holds a garland of severed human heads. The skulls and severed heads are said to symbolize the harmful human desires and passions (for women) that are vanquished by Buddhism. An Indian Mahayana Buddhist master, Padmasambhava, with his colleague Shantarakshita, helped to establish Buddhism in Tibet about the middle of the 8th century. Famed in Tibetan lore as a Tantric sage, exorcist, and magician, Padmasambhava is called the Lotus-Born Guru because, according to legend, he was born of a lotus flower. Invited to Tibet by King Khri-sron-lde-btsan (Trisong Detsen), he is said to have vanquished the the fierce native Tibetan gods and demons who opposed the introduction of Buddhism, converting them into dharmapalas (defenders of the Buddhist dharma). Padmasambhava is credited with founding Tibet's Bsam-yas ( Uncle Samye) monastery and with bringing from India the scholars who translated the Buddhist scriptures into the Tibetan language. In Tibetan Buddhism, Yamantaka is one of the eight protective deities known as the dharmapalas, or Guardians of the Law. In the Tibetan language he is called Gshin-rje-gshed. His Sanskrit name, Yamantaka, means Conqueror of Yama, the Lord of Death. He is believed to be an emanation of the bodhisattva Manjushri, who took the form of Yamantaka in order to subdue death (See cloning Marshall into Anna Nicole's baby). Turkey's desire to maintain its control of water rights in this region has been a major factor in its suppression of the Kurdish and Armenian (Christian Kurds) separatist movements there in modern times. Kurds have lived in Kurdistan since about 2400 BC. Traditionally the Kurds were nomads. In recent times, however, most of them have settled down because the separate governments have introduced sedentary agriculture and have forced Kurds to move their goat herds within national boundaries. Kurdistan (Kordestan, ie: Himalayan "istan" rope) is also the name of a province in western Iran. Kurds are the largest linguistic minority (11%) in Syria. Warsaw, Poland, June 27, 1936, was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from August 1993 to September 1997.
