The pomegranate, Punica granatum, a deciduous tree or large shrub and its fruit, originated in the Middle East and has long been cultivated throughout the Mediterranean world. The plant bears white or bright red flowers followed by seedy, red fruits that may reach 13 cm (5 in) in diameter. Thriving on a wide range of soils in warm climates, the pomegranate produces excellent fruit under semiarid conditions, as in parts of California and Israel. The many-seeded fruit was associated with both fertility and death in classical mythology. The goddess Aphrodite was said to have planted it on the island of Cyprus. When Persephone, the goddess of fertility, ate a few of its seeds on a visit to Hades (Africa), she was forced to return there for 4 months of every year. The Romans, who believed that the best pomegranates came from Carthage, called the fruit punicum, the Latin for Carthage (See Punic Wars). It is the smallest of the inner planets, perhaps because the heat of the nearby Sun as Mercury formed, about 4.6 billion years ago, prevented most of the gases present in the vicinity from becoming part of the protoplanet. Mercury's surface is very hot, sometimes reaching extremes of more than 470 degrees C (more than 1,380 degrees F)--especially at two "hot spots" opposite one another on the equator. This heat and the planet's low gravity make it impossible for Mercury to retain any significant atmosphere. Trace amounts of hydrogen, helium, and oxygen above the surface probably derive from the solar wind, whereas similar traces of sodium and potassium atoms may represent gases diffusing up through the planet's crust. Mercury is quite different from our Moon, however. It is 40% larger, 4.5 times more massive, and much richer in iron. Even Mercury's surface is different from that of our Moon in two important ways. First, although heavily cratered, Mercury's highlands are not saturated with craters. Extensive, gently rolling plains predominate. These plains may represent the original crust of Mercury showing through the effects of cratering, because Mercury's higher surface gravity prevented meteoric impacts from spreading their ejecta as far as they did on the Moon. Second, there are large, long, and winding scarps, or one-sided ridges, that cross the surface of the cratered highlands for hundreds of kilometers. These scarps are thought to have formed during contraction of the crust as Mercury's large core cooled and partially solidified. Further, microwave and infrared studies indicate that Mercury's surface is largely devoid of basalts. This suggests that Mercury has kept its molten iron interior--and related magnetic field--because there has been minimal heat loss from the interior through volcanic action, which would have led to a more basaltic surface on the planet. NASA has initiated plans for a relatively low-cost mission to Mercury.

Because, says a University of Alberta researcher, we aren't getting at the underlying reasons, the premise of why we persist in bad habits or risky behaviour. News and history is for fools. They do understand known facts, but need to look at other factors they haven't been looking at before." They could get to the underlying issues of what turns* most people to intoxicating spirits and/or other "spiritual" solutions, and would do better in fully understanding the context of their lives. "We get a sense of belonging that becomes important to us. "For instance, too much stress is bad for us, yet we are programmed to wear it as a badge of honour. It is seen as a socially desirable thing to be overworking. We don't seem to have the same respect for people who only work a 40-hour week or less." As well, we don't like to hear about what we shouldn't be doing, so we rationalize our bad habits, Jardine said. "We all have a lot of recalcitrant child in us. We keep smoking with the excuse "It hasn't hurt me so far", "It won't happen in MY lifetime" or "It helps control my stress or weight"." Until the psychology behind our risky child-like behaviour is really overstood,
rather than simply understood, most people won't give up their vices, no matter how

The most voluminous of the Cascade volcanoes, northern California's Mount Shasta is a massive compound stratovolcano composed of at least four main edifices constructed over a period of at least 590,000 years. An ancestral Shasta volcano was destroyed by Earth's largest known Quaternary subaerial debris avalanche, which filled the Shasta River valley NW of the volcano. The Hotlum cone, forming the present summit, and the Shastina lava dome complex were constructed during the early Holocene, as was the SW flank Black Butte lava dome. Eruptions from these vents have produced pyroclastic flows and mudflows that affected areas as far as 20 km from the summit. Eruptions from Hotlum cone continued throughout the Holocene. Shasta's only historical eruption was observed from
the ship of the explorer La Perouse off the California coast in 1786. Normally Shasta
erupts in cycles of 600-800 years. Be prepared for an exception to the rule.

a compelling movie to watch. Osgood Perkins, George Raft, and Boris Karloff are fine
in supporting roles, and cameraman Lee Garmes creates stark, affecting images in
scenes such as Karloff's murder at a game of ninepins: a spinning pin topples and
the camera records the X in his score. Bloody and thrilling, the film was subtitled
"The Shame of a Nation." It was remade by Brian De Palma in 1983, with
Al Pacino in the lead.
